I want to know what is the game with the best real-looking water, yes realtime rendered water. The water in Bioshock look really good, and how about Crysis? how should i know the game is not out yet. So what game do you guys think has the best in-game water?

the only other game that remotely comes close to having good rendered water is half life 2: Lost Coast.

Silent Hunter 4. Huge waves, reflection and refraction effects, underwater light rays . . .

THat does look good, as for me I don't know but my friend claims, years ago, that Metroid Prime had the best water he had ever seen.

Everquest 2's... not only does it look good it reacts properly and affects the characters clothes aswell.

Can someone please explain to me what is so good about Bioshock's water?

Um... it's nice water? I mean... how else can you explain it. Obviously everybody is not going to agree with each other, so why explain it?

I personally think Far Cry still has really attractive water.

yeah the water in FarCry looks very good, makes me wanna go swimming :p

Hey, rls669, how is this game? I borrowed Battlestation Midway on 360 from my friend b/c I only wanted to try out the submarine parts, but shooting torpedoes and being somewhat accurate was a impossibility. Is it more simulation than action?

best wave physics are in the virtual skipper games.

but this silent hunter ss rocks!

The first Alien vs. Predator game. The water in that game blew me and my friends away, especially the fact that walking through water made it ripple outwards. My brother probably died a dozen times while he was watching the water (just walking back and forth and looking straight down), and not paying attention to the motion tracker.

I'd say EQ2 as well, if it didn't have alot of rendering bugs I would say its one of the most impressive rendering items to date.

First time I was ever really impressed was in a tech demo video for FarCry on one of the consoles, possibly the Xbox360. It looks like the same level of detail in the water will be in Crysis so that gets my vote.

The water in Bioshock was nice, there were a few times when I thought it was a bit silly though, the flowing water didn't always flow accurately, this happens at the start of the game where the plane section crashes through the tunel and it starts to flood, water is pouring down the stairs and flowing under a door which is bending towards you because of the water pressure on the opposite side, of course this doesn't make sense!

Ice on the ceiling also melted upwards and outwards which was the behaviour of ice on the floor when it melted just flipped in the vertical axis.

Can someone please explain to me what is so good about Bioshock's water?

Not only is it gorgeously rendered, but also flows... somethihng i havent seen in games i played... unlike most games where water is simply still

AOE3 for me has some nice water effects

How's Silent Hunter 4? Game looks cool.

Frosteh: heh ya melting upward was funny. Thank goodness it's not much in the game.

I can only comment on the games I've played and/or seen videos of. Silent Hunter 4 seems amazing, but I didn't know about it, until now.

IMHO, Bioshock has the most beautiful water effects I've seen yet and even though I understand what Frosteh said, but the part of the demo where the plane, comes crashing in the tunnel we are in, is just amazing. The water effects are just jaw dropping.

I think Crysis will surpass it though. From the videos I've seen, the water looks even more amazing. The 3D ocean tech, is just awesome. But I have yet to see that with my own eyes, so for now, Bioshock gets my vote.

when i can take a cup, scoop up some water from somewhere, and see it exhibiting surface tension, that will be cool.

Morrowind has some surprisingly good looking water. I think it looks better than Oblivion's. Tomb Raider Legend also looks pretty good.

I enjoy the water in BF2. Not as cool looking as in HL2 where things actually look different when they're underwater. That's pretty sweet.

i think that in order to get really cool looking and flowing water, the use of a physics engine is must :D. Physix cards, multi CPU or GPU cores, you name it. I´m looking forward to see the water in Crysis

BF2? It just uses a fairly standard PS1.1 shader. Not terribly noteworthy by any means.

Lord of the Rings Online, when everything is maxed out looks AMAZING to me. :)

It's a simulation. It's all about stealth and tactics, not run and gun.

You can dumb it down quite a bit or set the realism to max and it's more of a second job than a game.

Silent Hunter 4. Without question, the best water to date.
Bioshock water didnt impress me at all...atleast no more the many other recent shooters. It does not flow like someone stated earlier.

Sea Dogs had some great water effects for it's time, espeicially when you were out in a storm.

I am more concerned with the question of who has the most realistic water. Farcry's water looks good but it is some of the dullest water out there when you jump in it.

You can dive in Crysis of course it will surpass it ;).

But nothing beats nostalgica. Morrowind the game that started "we must all have pixel shaded water" deal.

was awesome diving for ships. See the rain drops from below and here the sound distort. Noone has captured the underwater audio like Morrowind ;)

I think its important to take the time the game was released into consideration and for that far cry is my number TWO. Definitively, for me, Wave Race for Nintendo 64 was by far the best water and water physics at that time. That easily became one of my favorite gaming experiences due to the water and me being a big fan of good water effects. Mario 64 was good too.

Heh, I remember Mario 64's water too. That was the first time I was blown away, by being able to go underwater in full 3D.
