Best racing sim for PC

Not to derail the thread, but what are you guys using for your controller. I have an old MS Sidewinder pedal and wheel kit that is now borked, and I need to find a new one. When I googled for reviews, most are from 2002-2004 :(

I just bought Need For Speed : Pro Street and am looking forward to getting some time in.... soon.

Logitech G25's are pretty much the cream of the crop right now. If you can afford one.

I have the MS Sidewinder wheel too! I like it and I had it for a while now. It is showing its age slightly now - like one button does not quite register sometimes and when the wheel is straight it actually steers to the left slightly - but they are minor and I still love it! :D

Well... Trackstar 6000GT the is a bit of bloody beast! :D:D:D It pure [H]ardcore.

Holy crap!

I'm not gonna drop that much money on a wheel n pedals. I like Logitech products in general, but geesh.

I've read the momo pedals are crap... not sure what to get.

@Koko56
Yeah, I have really enjoyed that setup, but alas, it's toast. Whenever I connect it and start a game, I can't configure it... it constantly scrolls like the wheel is stuck. It's taken a beating over the years unfortunately.

That wheel is worth it PCGamer UK said, and I somehow think that that just may be true! :D TBH if I was still in love with GTR, GTR2 and RBR and if I had the money, then I would almost certainly get it! :D

That thing happens to me too, sometimes the FF constantly pushes the wheel to the left (I think... it might be to the right) ... I find that turning the FF off for a bit sorts it, however I'm not sure if you meant that the same happens to you...

Well well well, looks like my Sidewinder may not be borked after all. I won't belabor the point in this thread any further, but if you have a system similar to mine, you may have the same problem posted here.

It is, and then some.

how old is rFactor? gtr2 seems old

Live for Speed is good, good tire physics, but the rest of the physics are a WIP and the single player AI is horrid. Run LFS is you want to just race online.

GTR2 has better all around physics, not as good as LFS in some areas, but better in others, and better AI for short races, but wonky online code.

I gave up on rFactor long ago. I may fire it back up and see what's changed, but the whole package drove me nuts and relying too much on the community for mods to make it "interesting" damn near back fired on them.

I still have the Microsoft Sidewinder wheel and after 7 years it still works great. Only problem is that the pedals are very loud, they squeak like no other.

Hands down, DIRT would be the best Racing sim out there, with amazing graphic and realism.

LOL are you serious? DiRT is about the worst racing SIM (because it is not a sim, it is arcade style physics and controls). The car turns on a pivot point, it has the worst physics of any modern racing game...

gtr2 is the king of it all

Logitech G25. The best consumer class wheel you can buy without going to the expensive TSW or ECCI stuff...

Ok, i just bought LFS yesterday, already own rFactor, Toca's, Formula One's, etc etc.

First impressions, its pretty decent, i like the physics, but i wouldnt say the driving is any better than rFactor. But I enjoy it as much. However, the Online community definitely seems cleaner and much more well put together than rFactors. Easy to join games and not worry about having wrong versions of mods, and the netcode seems much cleaner. I am mostly a Formula type racing fan, and LFS Formula V8 cars and the recently added BMW Sauber F1 car are fun to drive. I sort of like the fact they are fictitious tracks, as it adds a diff element not knowing the tracks already at all.

So right now LFS is what ill be doing the twistiez on for the next few weeks at least.

Quite right...

I tried GTR2 last night after not playing it for a long time and I did 1:39.4 on the Barcelona track, and my best is 1:36.1... lol

In DIRT I can just pick it up anytime and still do best times...

Dirt is like tottaly not playable with a wheel, it's'just designed for an xbox controller, it's just a pretty arcade racer...

gt legends and gtr2 are the best imo, maybe legends is a bit better then gtr2 but definitely more hardcore than gtr2, dunno if there''s still many people playing online though...

I dono... GT Legends is very fun, but as far as Hardcore goes GTR (1) is probably the one. :D

You'll probably like the next update then! They'll release a new car

(from their main page)

"We are pleased to announce that there will be a new patch before Christmas. This patch will contain AI and physics improvements, updated Blackwood and South City tracks and... a new real car - The Formula BMW FB02!"

rFactor is older than GTR2, but they are both built on the same basic game engine.

rFactor is older but uses a more advanced engine than GTR2. GTR2 uses the same engine as GTR, just modified. Same with Race07. Next SimBin game will use a new engine that they designed themselves and not one from ISI.

My sidewinder wheel developed the same issue but it is easy to fix. Go buy a can of aerosol silicon lubricant spray, bought mine at Canadian Tire, and spray that into the pedal joints, no more squeak and is safe on plastics and rubber. Good for spraying on mouse pads too to make your mouse glide smoother. Don't get any on the kitchen floor, as I did, as it is very slippery.

Excellent! As long as they do a good job, and this is an area where many have tried and failed. Papyrus has done it the best. The boys at MGI (Monster Truck Maddness 2 and a very decent Nascar Racing Sim called Nascar Heat), but that team seems to have fallen apart. If I recall correctly, the leader of that team went to EA and was the overseer of the Nascar SimRacing effort, which turned out to be a total farse and didn't meet half the promises in the sales pitch.

It's an old Sim, but if you can find a copy, Viper Racing was very, very good too. I believe it may have been an MGI title, sold by Sierra, as well, but I don't recall exactly.

You can always tweak the ini. Users are constantly posting setups at the Codemasters . forum.

Huh? I thought that GTR2 used a new engine? Oh, and what's more advance in rFactor, I dono much about it... :p

After playing LFS most of the weekend and racking up quite a few hundred miles racing online. This game definitely has shot up to the top of my list for racing sims. Took me quite a while to learn how to get the cars under control enough to take it online, but now i can see why many rate this game so high as far as PC sims go. The online community is so streamlined with the lfsworld.net desktop, realtime states, etc it really just sucks you in. All i can think about is getting off work to go race some more now.

While it doesnt have the mod appeal rFactor does, the online is definitely far superior, and has a huge community.

dont know if its been said yet, I dont wanna read through the whole thing, but my votes go to GTR2, and racer beta.

does many still play rfactor online? im thinking of it getting this game in hopes to replace forza

There are still a lot of online players in rFactor. But the community isnt streamlined like Live for Speeds. And the Mods and version control can really become annoying when trying to join games.

I would check out LFS.net

overall which game out of rfactor, gtr2 and lfs is more popular online? they all seem like amazing racers but no point playing all 3 lol

I believe LFS is extremely popular online. The way they streamline in their online experience is very unique as well. Real time stats, there are many "clubs" who hold regular competitions and race seasons throughout the year as well.

Check out www.lfsworld.net and log in as a guest peep out some of the options on it. I keep that lfsworld.net up in a tab 24/7

how old is lfs? is this correct, 4 years old? http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/driving/liveforspeed/index.html

If you're looking for outright simulation physics, Race07 might be up your ally.

If you want something with a little more off-the cuff arcade style, Trackmania United really is a shit load of fun. I can't quit that game. If you get it off steam, you don't get Starforce either.

I still gotta try DIRT sometime. It's been given pretty high acclaim for a racing game.

Dunno if I have posted in this thread before but can update my views.

Race 07 is by far the most enjoyable racing sim I have driven since Richard Burns Rally. Great racing series, WTCC, FBMW, F3000, Radicals, Caterhams etc all very well done.

And please don´t call Dirt a racing sim it´s misleading. It´s an arcade title like Sega Rally :)

How is Race 07's online community? Also, is it available for digital distribution somewhere?

Yep. The dev team is constantly releasing patch updates, well not constantly, but consistently, to add new cars, tracks, high texture skins, etc.

What about LFS2? Is that a patch or does it need to be bought as a separate game?

The way they work it is that you buy licenses to access more of the game. S2 is the full license that has access to every car and every track. S1 has access to half of the game, and the demo has access to 1 track and a few cars i believe.

Ack. If it's anything like Sega rally, I will say far far away. SR has some cool things, but all it all, It feels cheap and flimsy to me.
