Im thinking about modifying my computer to make it nearly silent. So, keeping that in mind, what is the best silent power supply out there?

Seasonic's defanitely good but also look at the Antec Phantom or Silenx's.......check the before making a thread stickie's the silent section.

Keeping in mind I'm not too worried about silence myself, I think I'd go looking for the Seasonic S12 430w. www.silentpcreview.com has a review of the unit.
i'm on the verge of buying this too but even though its not sli complaint can it run two 6600gt's or one x800xl with room to spare?

yes

for a power hungry config the S-12 series would be my bet
for a truely silent config the Phantom fanless series is supposed to get a new big brother soon

excellent that was might fast too. S12 here i come, it even has the infamous 8 pin connector too, but what do i do about PCI-E?

grab one strand and use an adapter (per card)
it will use 2 molex to power it
since the lower voltages arent involved the added resistance is miniscule
(different when your dealing with +3.3V on a main mobo connector there the resistance can impact the rail)

dont plug anything else into that particular lead off the supply though
it can adversly effect the power with EMI and of fluctuate the draw
(most other components arent sheilded)

i would rather just spend the extra and not have to deal with that issue. Even if it costs 50 dollars more i think it would still be worth it in the long run.

well if you start to expand your idea of where the power supply ends
you can get very creative with feeding it cool air
say a duct of outside air fed with a nice big quite 120mm fan somewhere else in your box
and obviously a seperate thermal solution to address venting the HSF and mobo compartment
a little modding and even a monster like the PCP&C 510 can become remarkable quiet yet still have its thermal integrity addressed (protecting its usable lifespan)

alternately you could easily mod that S-12 to have a native 6 pin PCI-E video connector (or two)
its just three grounds and three +12V wires 6 pins a crimper and a connector (per)
you could go as far as sheilding it and even adding a ferrite core and caps to clean it up further

right now there just arent many monster supplies that are considered both quiet and SLi ready

(just noted we where talking SLi in the previous post, and its needs to be ammended to read 2 adapters and 2 dedicated strands off the PSU, at least ideally)

IMO if I was going to run an SLi Id get the PCP&C 510 SLi
and then address the sound issue with modding as needed

I was going through this forum to learn some info about Seasonic S12-500/600 which I am eyeballing now for my new build. Then I came across to this thread and am wondering what this is about? Is there a problem with this 8-pin connector? Why is it 'infamous?'
It's been a while since my last build so I am not really aup-to-date on this. I just know that there's been some changes. Excuse me if I sound ignorant. :)

Thanks for any input.

I think the 420w will power 6800'sin SLI fine. My rig at work has 2 6800GT's in sli and its powered by an antec 430w. I havent had any power issues with the rig so far.

Its not really ;)

its just an auxillary +12V mobo connector for server boards
part of the Server System Infrastructure (SSI) spec. EPS12V
its basically just a double of the normal 4 pin Aux connector you see in the formfactor.org ATX12V spec, and will even attach to a 4 pin mobo connector provided there is clearence (I have a few 4 pin mobos being powered with EPS12V supplies)

there are also strong rumors that the next interation of the ATX12V spec will adopt the 8 pin
(just like it adopted the 24 pin connector from the EPS12V spec)
inorder to deleiver even more power to the mobo for PCI-E 150W

Oh thanks for the reply.
Since this is a rather old thread I guess I think I'll ask few more questions that is not exactly same topic of the original post.
I am looking hard at the Seasonic PSU I mentioned above just because I think my current PSU(Antec TruePower 430W) does not have the required connector. I know about the adapter(20-to-24 pin adapter I presume) for newer motherboards(like Epox nForce4 Ultra board) but I heard some bad things about using the adapter.
Do you think I need to replace the PSU to be safe? Also, I am not too crazy about the Antec. I am not 100% sure but I think it is a reason that my PC acts up from time to time. I could be HDD too but again, now sure.

My new rig will be consist of

AMD A64(Venice) 1.8
Epox EP-9NPA+Ultra
Corsair DDR PC3200 1gig(2x512)
Hitachi SATAII 160Gig HDD
...I might add another HDD for RAID in the future
ATI X800XL PCI-X 256MB
Creative Audigy 2 ZS
DVD burner
DVD reader
FDD
2 case fans

I don't think I'll overclock but you never know.

Will my Antec TruePower430 handle these new parts with new specs? What do you think?
If I don't have to I don't wanna spend more money on this.

Any help is appreciated.

I thought that wouldn't qualify as threadjacking so...
This is more like recycling... don't you think? :D :D :D
