Best Q66 OC guide?

OK, well, I suck at OC'ing anything other than video cards and GP32's (LOL)

Anyways, I used this guide for my i7 per you guys and I loved it, real easy, real results, real quick!

Once my copy of 7 gets here I'll be moving my rig to Fermi, and to offset the loss of a GX2 I'll need to fold with my 8800GT and SMP's

So, is there a guide like this? Ihavnt been able to get my Q66 far on my 680i
 
Bump your vcore a bit, keep upping FSB.

That's all I did and get 3.4 quite easily.
 
The 680i wasn't that great of an OCer. If you go back a couple of years in the MoBo subforum, you'll find plenty of evidence to that effect.

With that being said, 3.2 should easy enough. Set your FSB to 400 and your multiplier to 8. Keep bumping up vCore till you find stability and that is pretty much it.

 
What could I expect from a Q66 @ 3 or 3.2?

Q66 @ 3.2 driving SMP2 A3 & 1 x 9800GX2 (2 x GPU2) I get between 4 and 6000 PpD. Varies a lot and not sure why.
 
So about 5k from my Q66?

I'll have to add in another card to offset today's losses, I just put Fermi in my main rig

Q66 stock, 12x10 L4D2 8xaa floats around 150-190 FPS, 80-90 during heavy action :), temps peak at 78-80 with crappy venting, fan is no where near as loud as reviews make it seem, and my case is open too

A Q6600 at stock is probably going to do around 3500PPD on regular A3s. At 3.2 it will probably do 6000-7200 on the regular A3s. Don't ask me why it will jump that much but it will depending on the work unit you are processing. Keep in mind that this is without any GPU clients running as well. Once you add in GPU clients, I can't help you with PPD. Single video cards and multiple video cards are going to make a difference as well as the GPU itself. A faster GPU is going to need more CPU time to keep it properly fed.

I have a Q6600@3.4 which isn't affected much when the 8600GT in the system is running. However my Q6600@3.6 takes a several hundred PPD hit at least on most work units the 8800GT is running.

missed a huge part here... you need to lower your memory multiplier especially if your using DDR2 800 then lower the memory multiplier to 1:1 with the fsb.. in the bios it will be the lowest setting.. but honestly dont set your FSB to 400 and then sit there playing with voltage.. because if you dont have a board with dual bios is a mother effin pain in the ass..

just set your voltage to 1.45v if you have decent cooling or start a little lower.. set your memory multiplier as low as it can go eg 1:1 with your FSB.. then raise the FSB in 10mhz increments.. boot into windows.. run a few passes on intel burn test.. reboot go into the bios and raise it 10mhz again.. do this til it fails.. if the temps are fine raise the voltage til its stable or lower the FSB in 5mhz increments til it's stable again.. once you find your max stable overclock and if you are below 400mhz FSB go ahead and raise your memory multiplier til your rams running at ddr2 800 or 1066 which ever your using.. its a pain in the ass but this is by far the easiest way of doing it..

Got a question. 680i doesn't come out and name things as easily as my older AMD boards did, I can go 1:1 but I can also go 3:2 which seems to lower the "actual mem MHz" value, but doesn't change the "actual FSB MHz" option. (this is the one I can change, as the mem changes linked with this)

Now this is running linked, should I unlink the two? Then I could change both values, but I'm not sure I should do that right?

leave them linked.. just set the ram multiplier to the lowest value.. 1:1 means it matches your FSB.. so say your FSB is 200mhz then your ram is running at 200mhz or DDR2 400.. raise the FSB to 400 then your rams running at 400 or DDR2 800.. your memory multiplier will have no effect on your FSB but your FSB clock will effect your memory clock as noted above.. im with you.. ive never been a fan of overclocking intel systems.. AMD overclocking is just so much more straight forward then intels.. to many voltages to screw with if you want to try and get a bleeding edge overclock out of something..

whats the rated speed on your memory? because 1200fsb with a 1:1 ram timing would put your memory at 2400mhz? unless you have the fastest ddr3 memory in the world its not going to work.. lol its not that hard to overclock a q6600 if you do the math and use a little common sense before you start overclocking.. the 680i motherboards hit a wall at 425-450 FSB anyways.. so 1200mhz isnt going to work anyways.. start at 300fsb x what ever the stock multiplier is with a cpu voltage of 1.4v.. if its stable.. push the FSB higher until its unstable.. drop it 5-10mhz and boom you have a decent overclock with decent temps and call it a day..

I just hate how the bios has like no options, which is funny as it's an EVGA 680i, it was hot shit when I got it.

It doesn't have the FSB as an option per se, it's confusing, not sure how to explain it. I've got a 650i on the bench and a 750i in Nostromo that can only handle 3 GPU's, I may switch out everything next week, put the 680i on the bench, put the 750i in my gamer with the quad, and put the 650i in Nostromo so I can run 4 cards vs 3 right now

any idea if the 750 will be better off, or maybe links to a better 775 board on the cheap I can get? I want to get more out of fermi, and I think my stock clocks are holding it back
Cheap mobo upgrade would serve me well, and be cheaper than the 500$ I'd spend on going i7

ya want a better board? quit using shit that has a nvidia chipset/northbridge on it..

arg im so use to amd systems using FSB.. on intel i believe it shows up as bus speed in the bios.. stock is 266x9.. so change the bus speed when overclocking..

Set your FSB to 400!! Use 1:1 (which is actually 2 and that will give you 800MHz (DDR2-800).

Set your CPU multiplier to 8 and that will give you 3.2 GHz which is probably what you'll likely get.

Set your Voltage to 1.4 and keep bumping till you get stabilized.
 
Hmm... tried out that guide, and all I can say is it must have been the other voltages I changed around. Ive done everything else they say and got nothing, but here I am, gaming at 3.0 Ghz for now, I'll move on towards 3.2 or 3.4 here in a minute

Thanks guys, hopefully this helps out my SMP times to make up for the loss of a GX2

I'd bet the problem is the motherboard rather than the CPU or anything else. 680i absolutely sucked for overclocking quads. It got even worse if you have more than 2 sticks of RAM. Hell, having 4 gig instead of 2 gig of RAM is probably even more trouble. The northbridge does not handle the traffic needed to run an overclocked quad. It's similar with the P965 chipset from Intel. It was a great chipset for dual cores but doesn't consistently perform with quads.

that and the i680 northbridge requires a shit ton of voltage and already runs hotter then most gpu's..
 
Hmm, I remember the 680i being awesome when I got it. I'll look into using my 750 next week once I get back home
