It's about time I tried to overclock again (haven't done it in a LONG time [Celeron 300A ring a bell?]). I have a nice Conroe system that's been running at stock speeds and it's about time to "upgrade." :)

In your opinion, what's the best "intro to overclocking" article?

actually little has changed, get it running stock, make a memtest86 boot disk and boot into it, up the FSB say 10MHz per bump, till either the memory or cpu craps out, then either give it some more Vcore or loosen memory timings, rinse and repeat. If you are talking Intel, its even easier than the old days, any PC6400 (800MHz memory) will get you to 3.2GHz on the cpu (8 x 400FSB) and the memory is not even overclocked.

Good build practices (use decent cpu heatsink, does not have to be big tower deal, good thermal paste, fan on the MCH/nortbridge - it gets OCed just as much as the cpu, care in assembly, decent case airflow ) and unless you are very unlucky 3.2GHz is a walk on the park with even a modest cost OCing board. Just use a rational and methodical method and dont go changing a bunch of stuff unless you know what will happen. Once you get the basic Max OC you can start looking at upping the MCH/Northbridge voltage etc.

There is a guide stickied either here or in the Intel cpu forum. .

I believe this is the sticky the above poster was talking about:

Lastly, I don't know what mobo you have (or plan to get), but you can google for nice overclocking guides as well. For instance, I picked up an Asus P5K-E/Wifi mobo and a Q6600. I looked at the articles above and also did a google search on Asus P5K-E overclocking and found a step by step overclocking guide over at the Extreme Overclocking forums. Between all those resources, I got my 2.4Ghz Q6600 running at 3.4Ghz with no problems.

Good luck and enjoy... :D

Hey wtburnette minding sharing the URL for the asus p5k-e oc guide you found step by step at extreme overclocking? I've also got the Asus p5k-e and q6600 g0 and pondering if i should OC it :)

Read le sticky, if that sticky doesn't help then you probably shouldn't be overclocking ;)

Thanks, I'll read the sticky and have a look. I have the ASUS p5w dh deluxe.

Have been having some issues, as of late, running some overclocks. It has been suggested to try changing some voltages of the the not so common types - NB , etc. It has also been suggested to fine tune my memory - anything but the obvious timings. Since this thread is turning into a "Best Of " I was wondering if someone could post some links to the "Not so Common" bios settings , their functions , and proper settings pertaining to overclocking.
