Well my brother is 12 and wants to experience some games for the pc. He doesn't need anything crazy. Just something that will allow him to play without crazy lag!

His system is a SR2017CL
-Athlon 64 (O) 3800+ 2.4 GHz
-Upgraded to 2 Gigs of Corsair Value Ram
-Upgraded PSU to Dynex 400WPS
14 A for +12V1, 15 A for +12V2, 28 A for +5 V, 30 A for +3.3 V and 0.3 A for -12 14 A for +12V1, 15 A for +12V2, 28 A for +5 V, 30 A for +3.3 V and 0.3 A for -12 V
The +12V2 rail is connected only to the ATX12V cable, so everything else is connected to the +12V1 rail.

Games at 1280x1024

I'd like to keep it cheap if possible. I'd like used as well too keep it really cheap!

For those resolutions, I would suggest a Radeon HD4670, but you may want to upgrade the PSU as well (the Corsair CX400w would be a good choice, I had one and it powered a Q6600 and 9600GSO SLI without issues)

HD4670/4770 is a good choice. PSU is a bit suspect, however, though as terms of amperage goes it should be OK provided that the PSU can maintain those specs, which cheap PSUs can't.

Wouldn't perform as well and would probably use more power. It might be cheaper though, on the FS/FT forums but in terms of the PSU you're probably stretching it even more.

HD4670, and unless that is a really crappy PSU you should have no problems - the total draw of that system will probably be somewhere between 100W and 150W under load and won't come close to the limits on those rails.

Ill second the 9600 GSO. Its going for $60 shipped right now on the Egg (with promo code EMCLWMM88) AND has a $20 MIR! Its slightly faster than the 4670 on some games and at half the price its definitely worth a look.

Given the power supply he has, I wouldn't risk getting a power hungry 9600 GSO and stick to something more efficient. Otherwise, the PSU might get eaten by it ;)

the ASUS 9600GSo is only $60 shipped and $40 after MIR at teh 'egg, great deal for a cheap gaming card...

Use the promo code in my last post and that Asus card is $5 off. Even better deal. ;)

regardless that psu is a heap. replace the unit, if it dies on you it can take many other things with it. Couple years back i didnt know to replace my psu and it died and took my cpu, mobo and gpu with it.
