Around Christmas I'll be moving up to a nice 22" LCD, and decided I want to go back and play all those nice FPS games (that I either played earlier on a crappier screen or put off playing til I had a newer video card.)

Any recommendations? Let's stick to games from the past ~4 or 5 years.

Already on the list:

Half Life 2/Episode 1
F.E.A.R.
Far Cry
Crysis
Stalker
COD4
COD5 (maybe, heard it's not that great)

Should probably pick up Left 4 Dead, but I don't think I have any friends playing it.

Anything else I'm missing? Are there any other "military" type games like COD4?

just finished gears of war again and its still a good game, so i would add that to the list, its like 20 bucks now. Battlefield 2142 is still fun.

If your into good fps multis, try call of duty united offensive, one if not the best fps multiplayer and in the series as well.

As for the cod5 not being great, it is, it might be a re-skinned cod4 (Cause older cod games did not copy older cod series before them until cod4), but its still worth buying.

You should add some rts in there :D

Team Fortress 2
Gears of War
Far Cry 2(I expect to be flamed for this but its on sale for $18 now and its worth that at least for 1 play through)
Crysis Warhead

Thats about all I can think of even though I know there has to be more. Now seems to be a good time to buy games, I know I spent a ton of money this weekend buying games and hardware while they were on sale.

I've heard some good things about TF2, I'll have to take a look into that.

As for RTS...meh, I'm pretty happy with Warcraft 3 unless you have some other recommendations.

Other than that, I'm basically sitting here waiting for Diablo 3 (not holding my breath for a release any time in the next year.) Here's hoping my new GTX 260 can run it with decent details by the time it comes out.

Basically, I think I may finally close my WoW account, I just haven't been able to get into it since the expansion came out (in fact, of my three 70s I had when the xpac hit, only one of them has gained a level, and he's only 71). I almost feel bad, like I'm missing out on the new XPAC, but...yeah. So, I figured I'd have more time for other games.

The only ones I'd add not already mentioned are Call of Juarez and maybe Bioshock. Shoot if this list is from the last 4 years might as well throw Quake 4 and Doom3 on there too. You can find those for 5 bucks

An awesome RTS you should try is Company of Heroes. The graphics were great and its a ton of fun. You can get the 'gold edition' now with the original and the exp pack for $30.

We are talking single-player right?

Prey was a lot of fun and is probably really cheap now.

Farcry2 is skippable, especially if you are gonna play FC1.

Bioshock is skippable.

The latest Rainbow6 games are all skippable.

Quake4 was ok. If just for that scene with the legs...oh god.

Oh yeah, Portal.

Portal is great.. not your traditional FPS as it's more of a puzzle game.

TF2 is you like multiplay

I actually love GRAW 1 & 2.

I'm pretty sure every Tom Clancy game after Raven Shield should be skipped.

Fixed those for ya. :p

I'm gonna go ahead and agree with the original quote on Bioshock. I gave it a shot about a year ago and couldn't get into it, found it boring pretty much right from the get go. Maybe I'll give it another shot.

Oh man, I cant believe I forgot Portal! You have to play that game, one of the best ever. Though, it wont really tax your video card or new display, you'll just enjoy it for the gameplay and the story.

haha i feel the same way, well kinda, closed my account about 3 months ago, tempted to play the xpac, or just sell my account and get a haf case, but too much put into it and its just 3 days of work :D.

As for rts, some that i enjoyed were coh, supreme commander and world in conflict, think thats it.

Bioshock i found fun and even more when its like 20 bucks now a days. I also enjoyed the rainbow six vegas series, graw 1 i never got into it, and like i said, the bf series is good. I have not played bf2 in a while but it was fun, 2142 on the otherhand is still awesome and going strong.

Gears of War is a third person shooter so technically it doesn't count.

I'd say L4D and TF2 atm.

Hell, this game needs more players, great fun whether you like WWII or not.

+3 for F.E.A.R.

+1 for BF2 / 2142... though i think 2 was a lot more fun that 2142 ever was. the gigantic servers with assloads of people everywhere. grenades being spammed out the ass, tanks, apc's, putting c4 on jeeps and crashing them into people and tanks... snipers, medics, and those stealthy recon dudes.

bf2 was hours upon hours of fun. if you plan on flying the jets though, you are probably going to want to grab a joystick. once i picked one of those up, i rarely ever got shot down while flying a china man's jet. that thing was with the quickness and on the for reals. hella bomb.

fo sho

Red Alert 3
Company of Heroes

As for first person shooters:

BF2
TF2
System Shock 2 is one of the best FPS if you can find a copy.

I'd just all over it if it wasn't a 19.99$ multiplayer mod. It's been out an awful long time to still be at that price.

Let's stick to games from the past ~4 or 5 years.

Forgetting this for a few games for a mere moment:

Max Payne 2
Dues Ex
Thief 3
Hitman: Silent Assassin & Contract
Star Wars: Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast
Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

Quake 4
Chronicles of Riddick: escape from butchers bay
Painkiller and add-on
Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2 EP 2 (pretty fun so far, just started playing it)
Serious Sam 2
Prey (if you don't get dizzy easy, I didn't and love the game!((love the vagina doors ;) )))
Far Cry
I hear the Doom 3 ressurection of evil is good (doom 3 is boring though)

Not quite old or FPS but Dead Space has been fun for me.

Bioshock is skippable.
:confused::confused:

Bioshock had oodles of atmosphere along w/ some of the best sound design I've heard in a long time. It's been quite awhile since a game immersed me this much. I played this game start to finish and very fast.

just picked up painkiller triple dose.....awesome twitchfest. put it on nightmare and have fun.

cod 4 of course.

quake 4 single player is cool.

hmmm....can't think of anymore right now....haven't played the full version of L4D but the demo was pretty cool.

Well you listed Stalker and there's alot of other good FPS/RPG hybrids that have come out the past year the best are Dead Space (third person), Mass Effect, Bioshock, and imo the best one Fallout 3. Far Cry 2 is decent but not at the level of the other titles mentioned. For shooters crysis and warhead are great and left 4 dead for great coop. Both COD 4 and 5 are great and are the most popular online pc fps played these days. TF2 is great fun too

Halo

Booya. I said it. :)

I liked the first one for PC. The campaign was really fun to play. Multiplayer was pretty good too. Halo 2 isn't too great for me since many of my friends refused to install Vista to play it.
