Been OC'ing for over a decade, before I even thought of i7 I figured I'd wring out my current moboard/mem setup and sit tight,and I'm glad I did.
Over the last year I went thru 6 different C2D CPU's and finally get ahold of a True Goody:)

E8600 EO retail, 1.1875 vid.
all volts droop adjusted, no vtt bump at all, on silent air, Prime and 3D stable
4.0 Ghz.@ 1.22v.- 54c.under load
4.3 Ghz @ 1.24v.
4.4 Ghz.@ 1.27v.
4.5 Ghz @ 1.29v.
4.6 Ghz.@ 1.345v.
4.7 Ghz.@ 1.39 into Windows, not primed
5.0 Ghz.@ 1.485 post

and before any smartass decides to chime in with,
"that's nothing, I had one that ran 5.5 Ghz. on an old 486 heatsink with an icecube and a table fan..."
please do us all a favor don't bother crapping in this thread OK.

anyway, I'll update as I progress
This one would be good for 5Ghz.+ under H20 or Phase easy

That's a very nice overclock actually. It's probably not "the best ever", but you've definitely got one of the better chips out there.
 
guess its time to do a hunt on cpu-z validated e8600 overclocks on air.. and see what you can do to beat them.. :p its been my mission for almost 6 months now to beat the record on amd athlon 64 3200+ clawhammer overclock on water.. to bad my psu gave out before the processor..
 
Nice results. More than 1GHz over my measly OC.
Why 6 different chips though? Just to hunt for the better overclocker?
 
Better than mine although not an 8600. My e8400 e0 reached 4.4ghz at 1.39v on air. The magical 4.5ghz, I just couldn't keep stable. Bought it boxed for 150 back in oct/nov from microcenter (always have the best sales on procs). They freaked out when I told them.

I'd be a crime if you didn't try for 5ghz with some water cooling! Who cares if u burn it out sooner, u plan ok keeping that wolfdale for another year? :)

no I meant I bought / resold 5 different ones, from Hardforum members over that time,:)
3- E8400's
1 -E8500
2 -E8600's

Kept the 6th.

Damn, my e8500 only did 4.4ghz @ 1.39v as well. Although i can run it at 3.8ghz @ 1.24v, vid = 1.25 :), you've got a nice chip.

Edit: What kind of temps are you getting?
 
those high end but not extreme cpus sure are amazing. Look at the Q9650 crazy overclocker as well.

but seriously thats a very nice Wolfdale OC. I can't wait to see how far it goes on some more extreme cooling meathods.
 
Very nice. I'm hoping for about 4.2 when I get home and tweak my 8500. New RAM needed though me thinks :p I'm thinking of some 2x2G GSkill PC8000 PQ?
 
At least some people are there are still keeping the hobby alive, hasn't been much bragging in the O/C department for some time.
 
I had a q6600 that was about as much fun to overclock as having a root canal.:(
Than I got a e8500 and it's stable at 4.5 and is windows usable at 4.75. :)

Wow! That is impressive. How much damage do you actually think happens when running a processor on air past 1.4 volts? Would it last a few years at least?

It would last over a year, certainly. It would probably start to degrade within two years though, and it wouldn't be able to maintain the same overclock.

1.45v. is generally accepted
cpu's will run for years w/ those volts as long as kept cool
I know firsthand:)
and this ones almost 1Yr +
I run it at 4.5 and it doesn't flinch

I think this is because its so easy to get 4.0+Ghz on i7 that there's a little bit of a lul in the OMGZ CHECK OUT MY L33T OC!

Maybe when i5 comes out there'll be some OC jubilation :)

To the OP, nice clocks mate, keep on keepin on with that chip. I think you could rock 5.0

Yea but you gotta realize that when I did that it was only for about 3-5 minutes and an air conditioner was full blast keeping it at about 20C(ambient is about 17C) and the VID on mine is 1.25...

I realize that. My previous post was in the context of continuous operation. Obviously, if you tried to run your chip like that 24/7, it wouldn't last too long.
 
Were I work we have a huge walk-in freezer (10' x 30') that runs at -10 F. degrees with LOTS of airflow. I have always wanted to to bring my computer down and run an extension cord in there and see how high I could overclock my computer... but the risk of damaging the thing and the potential look on my bosses face- :eek:

I have always wondered how that would work though. I know the freezer units would be able to keep up with the heat of the computer but not sure what that freezing air would do to all the components and whether it would cause condensation, etc. :confused:

Condensation only occurs when you place a cold object in air that is warmer, so the cold object absorbs the heat from the water vapour in the air and the vapour becomes a liquid. However, in a freezer the air and the objects within the freezer are all brought to the same temperature (and if anything, the computer would be warmer and not colder than the air around it), so no condensation would form.
