So my potential PC upgrade is coming around and I need some suggestions.

I'm using (and will upgrade sometime later) existing:
Corsair DDR2 667 2GB RAM (will upgrade later)
EVGA 8600GTS (will also upgrade in the future)
WD 160GB 7200RPM PATA HDD

Upgrading my Motherboard, Power supply, case, and CPU

Not sure about a case and power supply right now but I'll find something when the time comes. The price needs to be about $300 unless I get more money coming in.

For a CPU I was either thinking a Phenom II X2 or a Athlon II X4 or maybe a tri core, and I don't know if I'll have enough for a Phenom II X4.

I play a lot of games but I don't like my low frame rate on this Pentium 4. I also just browse the web when I'm not gaming and I don't do anything with photoshop or any other editing software like that.

I don't own Crysis nor do I care for its very high settings
I do play: Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Fallout 3, Killing Floor
I want to get: Bioshock 2, Modern Warfare 2, Bad Company 2, more variant FPSs and RTSs, and possibly Crysis, GTAIV, and other gpu hungry games.

So what CPU do/should I need? Would I gain more from a quad core? Or would it be more wise to get a dual/tri core?
 
get a X2 550 for 80 bucks, unlock it with your board, cheap quad core upgrade ftw!

also that HD is a POS

get a new 500-1tb hd for 50-100 bucks. worth it.


ur @ 200dollars with hd board and a 550, another 50 for a solid 500-600W PSU, rest for tax and/or shipping
 
It doesn't work all the time though. If it was 100% guaranteed I probably would have gone for that right away

im stitting at 2 for 2 unlocks with no problems so I highly recomend trying it.
 
I guess it wouldn't hurt to try, even if it doesn't work. I just hope I won't need all four cores later on.
 
The problem with your planned upgrade is that DDR2 RAM: It's gonna lock you into the AM2+ mobo category which means lesser future CPU compatibility. In addition, DDR2 prices will keep rising as DDR3 prices drop in the future.

What size monitor do you have?
What GPU do you plan on upgrading to in the future?
When will you be doing a GPU upgrade?

Now if you don't mind a lower chance of future CPU upggrades as well as higher RAM upgrade costs (or 2GB of RAM is enough), then yes a Phenom II setup is definitely within your current budget:
$185 - AMD Phenom II X4 925 CPU + ASUS M4A785-M AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard Combo
$60 - Antec EA500D 500W PSU
$50 - Cooler Master Elite 335 RC-335-KKN1-GP ATX Case

Dunno about you, but that extra $26 over the X2 550 + that same Asus mobo is well worth the knowledge that you will get a quad-core CPU for sure.
 
I knew about that, but I don't care about newer six cores coming out right now. But it's nice to see that I'll possibly be able to get a Phenom II X4. The monitor is a 17inch with a vga connector by the way.
 
I was probably considering a GTX 260, I probably won't be able to upgrade it for awhile until I get a job sometime soon. Same goes for the monitor
