hey guys my motherboard is this one: http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/d945gcz/sb/CS-026632.htm i assume the 3.6 pentium d (2 cores) is the best that will fit in there even though the mobo supports 1066 and the lga775?

You also have to factor in the chipset as well. Just because it supports 1066FSB and is LGA775, the chipset itself has to support the C2D/C2Q CPU. That chipset did not support C2D CPUs AFAIK.
So yes the Pentium D 960 is your best bet. Don't pay more than $35 for one. Otherwise, you're getting ripped off.
