I know there are a million of these but i need a card for a "low" res. i play at 1440x900 i play mostly dx9 games(ie:call of duty). i wanna get the best card i can for under $400. i was thinking 4870 but is it worth the extra $100 over the 4850? ill have the money at the end of july. so what do the experts say?

PS:gonna buy a heatsink but thats not part of the $400

Might as well go with a last gen card then. Anything from the 8800GT/9600GT up can push 1440x900.

I game at 1440x900 with a 8800GTS (g92) and Oblvion is just about maxed, looks gorgeous, and i never have to worry bout slowdowns.

Well if you have the money, get the 4870. Somewhere down the line, maybe you will want to play hi res because you bought a new monitor. It all depends on the actual value you place on the $100. I try and get the most I can afford with the current tech. I really don't see the point in getting old gen unless you're really hard up for cash.

I would recommend waiting a little longer to see how the "enhanced" version of the 4870
turns out; but if I had to choose now, the 4870 would be my choice.

What about saving a couple dollars extra and grabing either a 22" or 24" monitor to go with your vid card purchase. Right now there's a 24" Benq for $359 ( http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1320944 ) plus you can keep an eye out for another 4850 for $150 deal and you'd be sitting pretty for $510.

i prefer to have a card that will crush games not just be playable. as for the new monitor im happy with wut i have maybe ill upgrade in the future

Crossfire 4850's and they're smoking!!! They're running very close to CF 4870's.
Compare between $300 and $600 for 2 cards here with closely performance.
Something wrong with 4870's?

a 8800gt can "crush" any current gen game besides crysis at 1400x900, so could a 8800 gtx. That is, if ur meaning crush by maxing out ingame settings with 4x aa

I'm maxing Oblivion in 1440x900 on my 8600GT, with "playable" framerates. So if the 8800GT *doesn't* "crush" the game, I'd be pretty surprised.

As for Crysis, I can get high in 1024x768. Have to go for medium in native res though. But I'm probably buying an 8800GT, if I get it before you upgrade I'll let you know how it is, since I'm on 1440x900 just like you.

for a single card solution the 4870 and the GTX260 (the 330 dollar one) are good choices. I would have to say that the 4870 is the better value all round. Though value wise the crossfire 4850 is almost unbeatable if you have a crossfire board. This is actually making AMD attractive again. (think 790FX) . what is your current setup?

Sorry, I haven't drank enough coffee yet. as you have and SLI board you can only run two cards (if your interested in doing so) using the GTX260. so that might worth it if you want an upgrade path open to you. If you don't need it now the price should drop further on the GTX260. the 4870 are killing them. but by H standards they come pretty close to each other. other sites they compare them more with the GTX280.

well get a 8800gtx oc2 edition. actually i have one and it owns. pm me if u want to buy it btw. box and everything. just ame to fourm but can proove verified paypal and ebay seller.

well if he go a pair of them really cheap that would be ok but for the budget he has a 4870 or GTX260 would be a better upgrade. all the same if you picked up a couple of 8800GTX for around 100 a piece that would work as well.

kinda glad i won't have the money to end of july with all these price cuts going on
