Looking for some advice on an upgrade. I have a Dell 435T with i7 2.66 processor and a 475 watt PSU. The card that came with it was a HD 4350. I am looking to upgrade the card and I am using an HP 2709M LCD that runs at 1920x1080.

I want a card to be able to play games at higher settings like Left 4 Dead, Fallout 3, etc.

I am not partial to one company or another, just want a solid card. I would like to stay around $200-250, but will go higher if necessary.

Thanks for any input.

lots of choices.

GTX 275, HD4890, HD 5770, HD5850 (try to find the 5850) but may be a little out of your price range.

The 5850 will give you some breathing room to turn up details and AA. It's not 100% necessary, but it'll continue to play the newest games at that res for a little longer than most.
If you have to go a little cheaper, the GTX260 and especially the 275 will also serve you well.

Thanks for all the replies. The power supply is the stock one that came with the PC. You guys are right in line with what I was thinking, like a GTX 275 or a HD 5850 whenever I can get one.

I will make sure to update my BIOS also.

I just have to get something, the 4350 just doesn't cut it.:)

I run a 4870 at that resolution. Picked one up for $100 in the forums. Not bad price/performance.

So the 4870 did the trick for you? One nice thing about that is the price is right, had also thought about the 4890. Then the 5850 came out and I thought is it worth spending the extra money on the newer technology?

Yeah, 4870 works ok. It's not going to get you the same performance obviously, but for $100, I don't see anything beating it right now. Worst case scenario, you buy it for $100, use it for 6 months while you wait for 5850 prices to come down or for stock to be available, sell it for $75-80 and you rented a card for $20 for a couple months.

4890 is a little different as it runs closer to $150 usually.

If you can get one, get a 5850, otherwise a GTX 275 should definitely meet your needs.

I think I will wait for the 5850 to become available. It's a little more than I wanted to spend, but hopefully I won't have to buy another card for a while.;)

i wonder if that psu is strong enough. only one way to find out tho

It won't be enough. You'll 100% need a new PSU if your gonna pair up a GTX260, 275 or even a 5870. The PZU in the Dell are pretty crappy once you go over the wattage limit.

I was in the same spot you are about a VGA ~$200
I went for the 4890 which I got for $135 used yesterday. Was thinking about the 5770 too, but in a couple of months it'll be a lot cheaper, while the 4890 won't go that low (% wise), I think.
Please correct me if I'm wrong

5850 is a little beast when you clock it up. I have to agree its a great choice and fits close to your price range. When the supply goes back up hopefully the prices drop.

I believe that the power supply should be fine. You can actually get this same PC from Dell with the GTX 260 installed with the 475 watt PSU.

I highly doubt the psu in a dell premade is going to be good enough quality for 475w to be enough for a 5850 or 4890, prove me wrong?

It will probably be good enough. The 5850 should be fine. You might have some issues with more than a GTX260. Dell isn't going to use that PSU with their high end graphics cards if they wouldn't think it would work. They don't want to do any warranty work if they don't have to.

wait for the gtx300

Negative...in 5 months ATI will be ready for a refresh....but wait...3 months after that nVid will be ready for a refresh, and a few months after that ATI will have a new card.

Screw it, you probably should just wait and never buy a card.

I am completely confused why you would say wait for a card with no specs or reviews, when the OP is specifically asking a question about a card for the here and now for a specific resolution.

Like the unicorn, I will not believe the gtx300 exists until I actually see a review...with [gasp] real numbers.

Nvidia as a company cant be trusted.
Showing off a card that dosnt work as the real new product???
Then deny it?
come on!

I bet they will fake benchmarks and buy out every site guy that review the cards, even hardocp ;)
Kyle, dont jump out of your shorts now :D

I thought about the 5870, but thought it might be more than I need.

I also thought about the new Nvidia's, but who knows when they will show up.

As far as the PSU, I have read people upgrading to a GTX 295 and other cards without issue. The PSU manufacturer is Delta, so it's pretty good. I know it's not Corsair, but I think it will do the job.:)

Obviously it was too late at night to make a scrastic comment. My point was that everyone is saying the GTX300 won't be out before the end of february...3 months away. He is asking what card is best for a specific resolution and that guy recommended a card that 1) isn't out yet and 2) there are no reviews, benchmarks, or real working samples floating about. Okay, so they held up one in a conference, that means nothing without benchmarking it.

I have nothing against nvidia, and knowing their track record the gtx300 will be a beast, but when someone asks for a card to use in the system how can you recommend a card that isn't out yet?

just my .02 cents, i have had like 2 hours of sleep the past two nights.

4870 or4890
or 4770 if ur psu cant handle others
picked up used crossfire 4850 for only 130shipped cant get any better performing card with that price
i would go for 40nm ati cards with ur psu

5850 stock could run company of heroes maxed out 8xaa in 1920x1200.
Noted some slowdowns, which was taken care with some overclocking.
with 4xaa no issues.

if one want some headroom, a 5850 is a great buy.

I decided to go with the 5850. I got one from Tiger Direct yesterday and it is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. I will post my findings as soon as I get it hooked up. Thanks again for all the help!!

Should be a nice setup for you. I'm looking for an upgrade like that in the near future.

Thanks, I'm can't wait to see how this card performs. That was one of the things that I liked about the Visiontek card, it comes with a lifetime warranty. Just hope I don't have to use it.

its a great card.
I enjoy it immensly still.
soon 3 screen gaming coming up ;)
