Best ATI driver?

I'm having problems with my 8.11 driver, I can't load up the catalyst control centre, I get a send/don't send error report.

So I'm thinking of using an older driver, one which works with current games obviously.

Suggestions? And link to said driver, since on the official ATI website I can only download their latest patch...

Thank you.

to me, I think it would be the most recent drivers you don't have any issues with

for me, they are the 8.10 drivers. I was experiencing issues with the 8.11 drivers in terms of TF2 crashes.

yeah lots of people have issues with the 11's. I think even Kyle is still using the 10's

interesting. 8.11 purrs on my system. i wonder what the conflict is and hope 8.12 fixes it 4 u all.

I was using the hotfix drivers up until a week or two ago...
Simply because they worked.

I reinstalled the 8.11 drivers and they're working right no! That's strange :S

unless your card is just brand spanking new, you'd be better off with just getting the latest from your manufacturer website. unheard of, i know. but honestly, that was the only thing that would stop my bsods with my old ati card.

8.11 apparently has major issues with crossfire on certain chipsets, mine included. I can't install them due to BSOD. 8.9 was the same way for me. 8.10 is the only ati driver other than 8.6 that I have successfully been able to install and I am stuck on 8.10. I am going back to team green when the gtx280 refreshes come out next month or whenever they release them. I will be selling one of these cards to a coworker and putting the other one in my htpc which apparently I will get no sound from the hdmi output of the card due to, you guessed it, drivers. I have had quite enough of ati drivers to last me a few years. I thought nvidia drivers sucked until I bought these 4850's. These are the new definition of suck and make nvidia look like a golden child in comparison. At least nvidia drivers installed and got better and more stable each generation. Ati drivers get worse every release. Love the performance of these 2 4850's but I am done holding my breath during each and every driver version install and spending 15 minutes afterwards running system restore and repairing my computer. Drivers should just install and work. It's not rocket science.

i actually had the same problems - and came to the same results, see sig. but i think it was more the regressions that got me. some games that worked well in one version wouldn't work or would crash in newer versions. the drivers aren't that bad if you just pick a version that does what you need it to do and never update it, ever. the performance difference between versions isn't that big, and definitely not worth the headaches that come with it.

again u go trolling threads. but atleast now u say its a conflict with certain chipsets.

Hi Guys,

Maybe this is related to some issues with 8.11 but on my machine, when I launch L4D, my 4870X2 seems to only run with half the card instead of the whole thing. My framerates are cut in half. I found out that if I just refresh the video such as changing a video setting and letting it reload, my framerate then increases 2x. Seems to be an issue with L4D and the 4870X2 running in crossfire mode automatically. Takes a refresh to make it actually kick in. Maybe it is just my machine but it is a fresh install with the 8.11's. Never seemed to have this problem with the 8.10's. Wondering if anyone else has seen issues like this.

looks to me like youre trolling since you have nothing to offer. i already knew it was a chipset issue anyway without your wise intellect showing up to remind me. and as i said before there are many, many people having the problem so it's not me and my computer skills causing it like you would like to think. now beat it troll and stop worrying about me.

That's my point mate. I don't want to do that. Drivers should just....work. I don't want to fuss around with them, pray every time I install them and spend 15 minutes a pop running system restore. Don't get me wrong, I love the performance of these cards but I can't take the drivers any more. I'm sure ALLAMD will show up to call me a troll and wave the flag but that's his right if he has nothing better to do with his life.

Drivers should just work, and as soon as you show me a GPU company that can make drivers that "just work" while having great performance, I'll be there. Until then, it looks like we are stuck with ATI's and Nvidia's drivers ;)

Yup, I've had the same thing on my 4870X2, except I'm playing Fallout 3.
It seems that after I load a game, framerates go to crap (25 fps or so). Also, I don't hear the fan on the card, so it seems as though it's running off only one core. Then, about a minute later... BOOM! 60 fps.

It's strange, but I expected it from multi-GPU cards. Just need time for ATi to make the necessary driver changes. Hopefully in 8.12

EDIT: I'm also on the 8.11's.

Hi there Mr. Expert,

I know that you are having problems with your setup but after reading through your previous posts, I doubt that the problems are caused by the driver. When I searched for your posts, I found at least four pages of your posts with different problems that you are having.

Here is the list of the problems:
BSODs
Pauses in games
Shimmering and Flashing
Blank screen with no video
Problem with 2nd monitor

You said that you have tried different driver versions and yet you are still having different kind of problems with your setup. I don't know about you, but if I'm having different problems like you did and the problems won't go away with different drivers, I would start looking for the real source of the problems. Instead whining about the problems, I would spend more time to find a real solution for the problems, unless that, you are not really having those problems.

IM using 8.11 as well and i have the same problem with L4D. I have to alt+tab and get back into the game to fix the slowness.

lol thats what Astrodave doesn't understand. think of how many combinations of hardware or software and it doesn't matter the vendor amd/ati intel nvidia there will never be drivers that just work, u have to figure out which driver combination will work with ur hardware and software the best. if u want something that works just get a mac :p

alg7_munif: you're back again to troll me too? Once again posting out of context like i called you on earlier. Those problems are only in warhead as i said before. nice try. EVERY single game runs great on this pc except warhead. What is with you two clowns anyway? Am i your personal mission or something? Installing drivers is my problem and only certain revisions at that. ATI drivers are unreliable for ME and that is all i need to say. Go ahead and dig up some post from 3 months ago and paste it out of context again if you want. My pc kicks ass except warhead. My problem is updating drivers so that maybe, just maybe the problems with warhead and warhead only might get fixed...the game sucks anyway so whatever. Now move along and let those of us discussing the drivers continue uninterrupted by the children.

Thats alg7_munif for you. If it has something to do with bad ATI drivers, hes right there trying to discredit you and blame the user. Hes having issues accepting that ATI drivers are terrible.

Seriously. Why do people feel it is their mission in life to come to the aid of those that they have no business defending? Ati is a big boy and can defend himself. I am not a hater, in fact I love these new ati cards. I just wish they would get their drivers down. It seems that I can only install even versions of their releases because I get mad blue screens and all kinds of other issues when i try to install the odd versions. This is during the install because i was only once able to actually get an odd number revision installed but it blue screened the minute i changed to the 2nd monitor so i went back to the last even version and all was well again. Here's hoping that the next revision which is even will work for me. If not then I am done with ati and going back to nvidia, whose drivers are not perfect by any means, but are a far sight better than what I'm seeing here.

I can accept it just fine because I know that ATI, just like nVidia, have their own problems with the driver too. I'm just having issues to accept that nVidia driver doesn't have any problem. I love this forum, each time someone said that ATI is bad, there will always be someone else reporting a problem with his nVidia driver. :D

Btw Astrodave, I really think that you should look into your problem, like I said before, it couldn't be just a driver problem if you are still having issues even with different driver versions. Having an "I'm an expert attitude" won't help you with the problems. Instead of posting "ATI driver sucks" in every thread that mentions about ATI driver, you should start your own thread and tell us what have you done, is it a clean windows install or did you upgraded from an old GPU? From what I can see from your previous posts, you also mentioned about upgrading your mobo.

Weve already established multiple times they both have their issues. You just cant seem to accept that the amount of ATI issues dwarfs the amount of nVidia issues. Its more like for every one person reporting a problem with an nVidia driver, theres 5 people reporting problems with ATI drivers. Its ok, some day youll see the light.

That means nothing actually. If you go here, I'm sure that you will have a hard time finding someone who is having a problem with his ATI driver. I would also have a hard time finding people having problems with the nVidia driver here.

Btw this is quite interesting. :p

Well I got the 8.11 working now, though thanks for the link, might come in handy in the future.

You're welcome!

Got my Gainward 4870X2 "golden sample" yesterday and installed drivers that came with cd. (8.10). Had a uninstall of Nvidia drivers, manually put in standard display adapter, turned off and switched cards, installed ATI drivers and everything is well so far after 1 day of testing only though.

Games played are: Fallout 3, COD 4 and ET- Quake Wars, all on max of course. :D

I've encountered no instability issues.
System:
P5Q
Corsair HX620W
Q9550@stock
Corsair dominator 8500@1066
Vista 64
Catalyst 8.10.

Prove it. Until then, its just FUD.

That said, I have yet to have a problem with ATI drivers on 4 different computers, yet on 1 of those 4 systems, the nvidia drivers constantly crash and flat out refused to work. So for my sample size of 4, the ATI drivers are clearly far superior than the nvidia ones.

Ugh...ive already done this before. These are from the first page of each subforum...

GTX 280: Core clock & Shader clock drop from 3D speed to 2D speed IN GAME...

Thats at 12:46pm, today.

Funny thing is i actually had to go to the second page to find that one from the nVidia section, and i wouldnt be surprised if the problem is the GTX 280 not having enough of a load from a Source game, and thinking its not in 3d mode, and not really a driver problem at all. So theres my proof...unless nVidiots are just smarter than ATI users at figuring out there driver problems...

As for your nVidia driver problem, are you sure your not installing them on a machine with an ATI card?

lol what? That is far from proving ANYTHING. Last week there were more nvidia driver problems than ATI driver problems on the first pages, but nobody was suddenly claiming that nvidia's drivers were crap. All you did was repeat my crappy "survey" with a slightly larger sample size - the results are far from meaningful. Between me and my friends, Nvidia has a 100% failure rate (two RMA'd cards + driver problems) while ATI has a 0% failure rate. So clearly I just proved that NVidia provides the worst drivers in the history of forever while ATI's drivers are a gift from God, right?

So again, either provide proof or stop spreading FUD.

Ive done this multiple times, and its always the same. Why dont you prove nVidia had more problems last week or whatever? You guys are getting boring to debate with. yawn:rolleyes: again.

I have 3 computers at home with Vista 64. 4870x2 in my gaming rig, and 4850 in the other 2 (wife and children). Upgrade was smooth and bug free for 8.9, 8.10 and 8.11.

I was using the NVidia GTX 280 before the 4870x2 in my gaming rig, but I was getting ramdom reboots with NVidia drivers, and alot of problems with the combination PSU/GTX280. But, not a single problems since I made the switch to the 4870x2 in the same system. NVidia drivers were alot more problematic for me...

2 weeks ago, I made the switch to i7 920 and Asus P6T Deluxe X58... And again, not a single crash or BSOD with the 4870x2 and 8.11. :)

That is because you aren't debating, you are simply claiming you are right and providing zero evidence to support it. Number of threads on a topic at any given point is not proof of anything. You also aren't taking into account total users of a given brand. If ATI has 2 times the number of problems reported in these forums but there are 4 times as many people using ATI cards here, then ATI has better drivers than nvidia (which will have twice the problems per card than ATI).

There is also the massive flaw in that you assume that everyone with driver problems creates a thread on the topic. When I have driver problems, I search around and find the workaround/fix or revert back to older drivers to solve the problem, I don't create a new thread on the matter. I am willing to bet that that is what a vast majority of the people on these forums do.

So again, either provide VALID EVIDENCE or stop spreading FUD.

I can bump all the threads with nVidia driver problems to the first page if it would mean anything to you. ;)
