If you are going to leave the cards as they are I'd go for the GTX 570. If you are willing to tweak the 6950 up to a 6970 go for that.

more like a 250-290 for the higher end ones

Yup. i am trying to avoid rebates too.

I haven't read much on the overclocking/using the bios setting on there. What is the probability I can over clock it to the 6970 speed?

Well, if you can get a 570 for a similar price then I would go with that. At this point, most stuff is priced at its performance anyway. You just need to look at what games you play and decide how much performance you want to pay for.

OP, please list your specs as asked in the first reply. there is zero point in giving you suggestions when we have no clue of what your pc looks like and what res you play at.

I would go with a card that offers a solid non-reference cooler whatever you pick. There's nothing more annoying than listening to a hair dryer next to you when you've got a hot GPU overclocked and running full throttle for long periods of time.

you still did not list your resolution.

btw the 8800gt 256mb was one of silliest cards ever made as the low amount of vram kept the gpu power from ever being fully utilized. even at 1280 pretty much any game uses more than 256mb at settings an 8800gt could otherwise handle.

570s are generally NOT faster than 6970s unless you are running heaven 2 benchmarks but you must have been thinking of 580s, right? but even then 580 struggles in some regards so I guess I'll let me previous statement stand

I'd go with a 6950 or 6970. The 2gb of VRAM may be nice to have in the future.

you can even get that one for $230 after MIR.

I have 2x6850 in crossfire and I love it. really is a fantastic setup, but if I were spending $300 right now, I would go for a single 6970 or 6950- just a simpler setup. I've had very few problems with my crossfire setup, but a single 6970 gives you a better upgrade path as well as the 2gb framebuffer for if you have the opportunity to go for eyefinity later.

I saw a few 6970s around $330. I am looking into those compared to the $370.

Reference 6950 2GB flashed to a 6970 is the best bang for the buck video card out there right now. And you can have em typically for aound $250.
