Best 2D Fighter

On the Capcom side Street Fighter II CE and Street fighter Alpha 2

On the SNK/Playchoice side KOF98 and 2000

I still play those to date.

SF3 Third Strike is another of my favorites, only barely beat out by Alpha 3. I have 'em on Dreamcast too, but I've got some of those spiffy playstation controller adapters :) For MvC, I think 1 is way better than 2. 2 is pretty fun, but it's way too easy to win by just picking projectile characters and button-mashing. I don't have too much SNK experience, been wanting Mark of The Wolves for a while, definitely getting the DS guilty gears when it comes out in dec...

I can't believe how few people have said Guilty Gear. I used to be a Street Fighter whore until I played Guilty Gear. I think it is hands down the best 2D fighter made.

Super Street Fighter 2, Killer Instinct, and UMK3 for SNES. I've got them and play them regularly. The Dreamcast had some bitchin fighters too.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo and Marvel vs. Capcom
Oh and there was a modified version of Street Fighter II': Champion Edition that was pretty cool too.

Heh SF2 is fun for sure (especially 10-star). However, MvC is pretty good as well:

My poor cuz bought a dreamcast, and MvC was probably its saving grace, hah! We had the arcade joysticks too =D.

There was a lot more good about the dreamcast than MvC my friend. :D

another for guilty gear

capcom vs snk2s just too insane for me, the timing and the speed u have to do things at just seems too unreasonable, guilty gears more about technique imo while cvs2 about superhuman combos :p

Heh heh...my nintenDORKness came though, sorry about that. Again, though, my cousin was the only one with a DC - and he only visited a few times a year. Locally, all my friends had N64/PS so I really had no idea.

That was great! All specials in the air & instant character changes via the start buttons

Can I say Killer Instinct? It was pseudo-3D, but worked on a completely 2D plane. My personal favorite when people ask about 2D fighters, but it always brings flak. If not, I'm going with SF1, Samurai Showdown, or Guilty Gear.

EDIT: argh... left out one not mentioned so far but right up with Killer Instinct in my book: Primal Rage. God I loved that game, untold quarters spent on that one. Fart clouds, piss, and all the rest make it a standout title.

The instant character change was the best :D
