Best 1vs1 multiplayer fps?????

quake I or II with all the old mods...grapling hooks and weapons mods etc.

MAN that was fun as hell with just 2 people

Great fun even on 1v1. Unreal Tournament with bots is also cool.

Pick it up for cheap.
 
Bah I can't believe no one mentioned this yet...

While not 1v1 games, the Tribes series has the best duels hands down.

The different weapon loadouts, jet packs, and varied terrain really lead to some strategic and unique duels that require tons of skill. Also, duels tend to last at lot longer than those in other games. It's not about who picked up what weapons, power ups and health packs, it's all about skill.
 
the original unreal, the original deck16. no shitty jump boots or warp in the basement... and toxin suit. aah... the memories. gotta love the lift battles and asmd whoring.
 
How about pretty much the only games actually specifically designed for very small team/1vs1 multiplayer....

Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

Or if you want to get oldschool how about some Rise of the Triad?
