Looking for a Core2Duo to finish putting together my HTPC. My budget is limited to about $150 on the CPU, would the e8400 be the best choice in this price range?

The motherboard, an XFX mATX platform can accept both 1066 or 1333 FSB cpu's. Do I even need something this powerful? Although, I'd like to buy the best for it now if I can.

I did find an e6850 which I realize isn't a 45nm processor and it has 2mb less cache, I don't know how much slower this would be, but it's almost $50 less.

Like the title says though, looking for best bang for the buck with the cash I have to spend.

So far I have,

XFX 9300 Motherboard
EVGA GTX 260 video card
Corsair 2x2gb's of ram
Corsair HX 520

Appreciate any thoughts...

Yes, the E8400 is best for your needs. Two faster cores would be better for an HTPC than four slightly slower cores. It also has the benefit of generating less heat and using less electricity than a quad, so it should be easier to cool.

If it was still too much for your needs, an E7400 would do nicely too.

Valnar,

I appreciate the reply. My budget is very tight here...and I'm trying to use Bing cash to even help the price. I can get the e7400 for $90 plus free shipping, so if you think this would work...I might go for it. I'll be primarily watching movies, a little web browsing, playing music and "very light" gaming. Mostly play games like Cog, no heavy duty games.

I think you might be on to something here though because it would be easier to keep cool?

The e7400 would be a perfect choice IMO. You don't need that extra 3mb for a HTPC. The 7400 will run nice and cool, hell you can probably undervolt it for even lower temps while having more than enough performance for your needs.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'll hit the trigger on the e7400 then.

Best,

Thanks Valnar,

The total came to 90.40 with free ship/bing...you guys saved me some cash.

I do appreciate it.
