Ok I havent ever been in the market for a Hardrive but now I am. Since games arer gigantic now I need a bigger hardrive than my 80GB. What is a 120GB hardrive going to cost and which is best. My budget is around $100-$150
 
for around that price you can get a low end 250gig hd...i got one and it even came with like a 30 dollar rebate..
 
Well I dont really need 250GB I need probably a 120-160GB size, how much would that cost.
 
my hitachi 160gb's were under 100$ each. you can get a seagate 120 for cheap too. if you dont trust hitachi's then get seagates.
 
I'd get the largest Western Digital drive you can afford. They have the highest quality drive internals, although there's nothing specifically wrong with Seagates, I just prefer the WD line instead.
 
i have a brand new maxtor 160 gig diamondmax 9 ATA 133 8mb Cache still sealed and have like 4+ years warranty cuz its RETAIL for sale. 90$ shipped
 
the local frys in my area have 120gig hds at 49 dollars after rebate...i would still not buy one as its ata100 5400rpms.. i'd still buy the 250gig seeing as its about 150 bucks, ata133 and 7200rpms..
 
fry's in atl has some seagate 160 form i think 59.99 after rebate, good deal

how so, HDD's aren't really something that can be refurbed on a large scale when most get tossed by companys and indeviduals

and if fry's sells seagate refurbs, i guess everyone does, after all it is seagate that issues the rebates, not fry's
 
where the heck do you get that idea? I've bought several hard drives from Fry's and i haven't had a single problem with any of them, even if some1 has had a problem with a hard drive from fry's i guarantee that it fits into the regular failure rates. If you actually have some *facts* to back up that statement, i'm interested. But if you are just making stuff up to rationalize the fact that you have some kind of grudge against the store, don't throw out untruths that might lead some1 new to the market astray.

Let's settle this now before it gets ugly. Are the drives marked as refurbed? If so, no harm done. I've bought many HDDs this way without issue. If someone is saying the retail ones are really just refurbed, than we should get some proof or facts posted here....because that would be wrong for the consumer.

So, let's get the facts...are they marked as refurbed, or are they ripping people off?
 
You say you don't *need* 250 now...but you probably said the same thing when you bought your 80. Might as well buy the 250, best size/cost ratio and will last you alot longer.
 
maybe im wrong, but everytime im in bestbuy, officemax, office depot trying to get a price match from fry's ads, they say that they wont because their shit is mostly refurbs and they have some right to repack and claim they are new.
 
I'm not taking sides, I just think this is an issue we should get the facts on.
 
well i guess what it all comes down to is the warranty on this thing, if its the same as any other drives from other stores then I think its safe

This is no time for opinions. If you have facts, post them...something beyond your own personal experiences. The industry analysts (Gartner, etc) always rate WD the highest in reliability. I've had 30+ WD drives in my life and never noce had them fail.
 
I always recommend WDs and Seagates. My oldest hard drive, nearly 9 years old, is a WD, and it's still going strong (though the comp it came in is shot). My other desktop has a 40 GB WD, still running perfectly after nearly 5 years. My current system uses a 160 GB WD, and it's great, really fast.

The downside is that some of the WDs are loud, they're the loudest part in my computer. However, the new ones use FDB, so I think that should alleviate the problem. I usually choose WDs because they are very good performers and have been constantly regarded as pretty reliable drives.

Seagates are a new favorite of mine. Not quite as fast as my WD (hdparm testing in Linux, so it really doesn't mean anything), but they are quieter and still very good.

My friend got a Samsung drive (which I referred him to), he likes it, but it's not as fast as he would like (it only has 2 MB cache, but it's only backup drive).

Oh right, I also tax my hard drives a lot, sometimes passing gigs of data through them every day, among other things.

I agree. Both manufacturers make very quiet, fast drives. WD/Maxtor is ok, if you can stand the noise. IMO.

Thats actually very true I did think about getting something smaller than an 80 when I got it because I didnt think I would ever fill an 80GB Drive now a few years later its tiny!

i dissagree, at work we have thrown away around 20 samsung drives, all with damaged sectors and they just bit the dust not even a year old ( i think the old emachines used samsung drives?!?) i havn't had problems out of seagate at home, work we had 3 scsi drives go down they were pretty old. IBM (AKA Hitatchie) are pretty much still junk, they have gotten better though, but our AS/400's have drives fail at least once every three months (there are 76 drives in raid 5 on the 400's)

WD, never had a problem, i agree they are louder, but i don't mind it, i barly notice it. my girlfriend had a gateway, i still have the WD drive out of it, its about 7 years old and runs perfect.

Maxtor, well, i just had one die on me (first and only maxtor) it was 3 years old, lasted long enough to not get a bad name for me, they are a mid quality drive and would buy one if it was a good deal.

All this is from personal experience and i wouldn't lie about it, My first choices would be WD for and ata drive and seagate for scsi. I have a raptor that has been great but i don't trust sata enough yet, still to new for my important data.
