Battlefield 3 - Official Thread

But I will take your advice and stick to the Battlefield forum in hopes of joining with thousands of others in pressuring DICE to fix some of the glaring problems they've announced. Its pretty evident that this thread is packed with people (notice how I didn't replace "people" with an ad hominem attack???) who are new to the series, and willing to accept some pretty deplorable gameplay features due to a complete ignorance of a better alternative. At least I can hope beyond hope that many of you drop the game within 2-3 weeks for COD MW3.

Classic mature post on Hardforum, you make this place great.

I am not going to re-address all the hogwash you posted, nor am I going to read it. Ironically, just about every thread on the ACTUAL Battlefield forums concerns the shafting of the PC community. I suppose that's the problem really, people with no real concern for the game as a sequel to BF2 are in this thread making quite frankly terrible posts. I suppose this mentality is also why the dumbing down of PC gaming is becoming more accepted.

Yes, my completely valid critiques (probably more so than yours and many in this thread simply based on my experience with the franchise), are trivial and pointless. By your logic (as ADMITTED BY DICE ITSELF), there would be no prone in BF3, nor battlerecorder, nor squad leaders. But I guess "we listened to the community and included..." means that the community has no say. Right? Up is down and BF3 is a real successor to BF2.

Approaching 800 people on the EA UK forum agree on commo-rose, something which is relatively minor in most people's eyes: http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk/...er-dice-commo-rose-game-defining-feature.html

I bet those 100 or so people who voted against it never played the original BF games to begin with... but I'm the one spamming this thread with non-sense.

Oh wait, here's another poll on blowing your assertion that I am the only one who cares about the 4-man squad. http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk/battlefield-3-pc/1404736-petition-6-man-squads.html

The ratio is literally 10:1 against 4-player squads in all game modes. But I'm sure evidence won't change your mind.

selection bias. Those people probably seek out EA forums in order to vent about their life being ruined by no commrose and no 6 person squads. Normal people, of which there are probably 100x as many could care less. Also, I'm waiting for you to prove this game was made on consoles first and then PORTED over to PC, as that's what "console port" means. Till then I stand by my remarks about your antics. You're pretty much just trolling, because nobody on THIS forum, gives a damn about your bulleted list of "DICE atrocities" or whatever...

I don't come to the same conclusion because I recognize game design =/= console port

I know the difference, you don't. Your logic is flawed, constantly repeating yourself isn't going to change that and certainly isn't going to make those of us that know better adopt a simpler mindset. I can't make you understand because you don't grasp the basic fundamentals. That's your problem. I don't care if you report me. It's not going to change a thing, you're still wrong.

By your logic, if all cats are brown, and i'm brown, I'm a cat.

Ok, so instead of actually debating the facts of the matter, we skip straight to ad hominem attacks? Reported.

Let me diagram this out for you so you can ignore it and continue to base your opinions on fantasy land.

PC:
BF1942
BF2
BF2142
...and about 5 accompanying expansion packs for all of the above.

Console (and ports):
BF1943
Bad Company 1 (I believe, although I never played it)
Bad Company 2

Now group those into health Regen and non-regen categories.

Non-regen:
BF1942
BF2
BF2142
...and about 5 accompanying expansion packs for all of the above.

Regenerative health:
BF1943
Bad Company 1 (I believe, although I never played it)
Bad Company 2

Funny, both lists look the same... Now, with the above information how do you not come to the same conclusion? Hell, Bad Company 2's regen system was a terrible ripoff of the COD bloody screen regen system.

For the record I am not anticipating you will understand this at all. Unfortunately I can't write in crayons on a computer forum.

But hey, BC2 doesn't have regen if you play hardcore! Does that mean it is only a port sometimes?

Let me make it very simple for you:
If a game is designed for a console, than simply translated to the PC, that is a console port.

Frostbite 2 is being designed for the PC. It is being done on DX11 (instead of being adapted to it) and 64 bit systems. It's shading, etc. are being done for the pc with the pc in mind, and only then ported to consoles. That means that BF3 is not a port. No matter how much you dislike whatever gameplay options they make, the fact that it was developed for the pc means it is not a port.

Two games can have identical game features on different platforms and not be a port.

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat was console-exclusive and didn't have regenerating health.

Dethred, you are aware that there is a hardcore mode for Bad Company 2 which removes regenerating health?

Their gameplay designer has said so far that they are going for a 2142 style pacing and weapon feel. 2142 fucking owned and pretty much nailed weapon balance so

wait nevermind this game is a ported pile of shit fuck.

I miss playing that game so much. *sniff* It was always be my preeeeeeecioussssss.

This is the problem I think some of you don't quite realize. BF2 was a pure PC game. It, to this day, signifies how much deeper and better a PC game can be over its console rivals. Some of us have been waiting for a successor to come along for 6 years!

Here we are, 6 years later, and that successor is going to be a stripped down consolized piece of shit. Is the game going to be fun? Most likely for a while. Is it going to be as fun as a true PC successor to BF2 and 2142? No way in hell.

What this signifies to many (thousands) of us Battlefield PC enthusiasts is the death of the brand. There will be no proper BF3 because this hybrid bastard is taking its place. I personally considered BF to be the last bastion of hope for true PC FPS games... and its going to be a console port yet again. And to rub salt into the wound, DICE is going to keep harping on the lie that this is being developed for PC and trimmed down for consoles. We're not stupid.

DICE probably wanted to, but EA likely told them, in so many words, if they screw up the port to console it will be the last game they ever make. No one buys PCs anymore for gaming - its consoles, handhelds, or tablets.

Are we still whining in this thread lol?

my two pence is that this game has a balance between having a few console/dumbed down features whilst having a lot of depth/pc centric stuff going on too.

Its going to be a fantastic game. if you dont ike what you see so far, dont buy it.

Why are the changes only removing features and making the game more console friendly? No one is saying they should remake BF2, but just not remove key gameplay features and noobify the shit out of it. (I don't expect 95% of the people in this thread to understand that). Why not fix the issues and then add improvements?

Because those changes for the most part aren't that significant, nor do they really noob up the game.

I've explained previously that I don't like noobing up games for console players, I'm maybe one of the loudest proponents of PC gaming remaining true to its roots. However my main gripe is that it lowers the skill ceiling, that it normalizes skill between good and bad players to give casual players a fighting chance, which really kills competitive play.

The changes from BF2 to BF3 aren't really doing that, noobs aren't going to get it any easier because the common rose is gone and spotting is in, most noobs didn't even know about the common rose or how to use it and probably don't spot either.

Having to manually select a voice macro, or manually select your knife is something which isn't difficult to any seasoned gamer, there is really no reason to have that extra step when it could be smarter.

There was no major outcry or issues with what they removed, its simply that they are trying to make both platforms as similar as possible in the interest of time and money. They can't add in complex things like commanders, or a commo rose, because its hard to implement with 6 buttons and an audience that is 12 years old or stupid as shit.

Commanders were removed because the effort in making them and balancing them vs who gets to use them in a game which is only 1 in 64 players, is not worth the effort. The commander wasn't an especially great aspect of BF2 in the first place, responsible for a constant rain of arty spam which got boring very fast.

The things they have changed are not for "better gameplay" are many of you are dismissing or explaining it as, its to cater to people who are accustomed to COD. Some of you may think that is all right, but I am betting those of you who considered Battlefield their favorite FPS series will agree with me.

Look, I agree with you, some features are introduced because they're becoming accepted standards in games, the idea of instant knife and such like, and these things are no doubt influenced by the consoles, but for the most part it makes no difference to game play, noobs will be noobs and pros will be pros.

If it was something that was a game changer such as only allowing 24 players on the PC version then that would be cause for complaining, but most of the stuff isn't a game changer or is of negligible impact.

Can you imagine trying to develop a game for all these angry nerds? Jesus. No wonder devs have abandoned the PC in droves.

Anyone know if BF3 will be force-tied to "Origin"?

I think they said a while ago that they "want their customers to use their favorite service" or something like that. Sounds like a hint it could be on other services such as steam. Personally I will get whichever one has the least drm.. As in securom garbage.

I think we are getting too damn elitist. If you want extreme realism go play ARMA, but wait it's not fun and it's not done well enough for everyone to like it. It seems we all want a game that can't be made, someone is going to be raging about something no matter what.

Good information on BF3 classes from Sr Gameplay Designer, @Demize99: Battleblog #2, With a Bit of Class

Some of the content:

As mentioned, the four classes available in Battlefield 3 are Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon. All classes include familiar elements, but this time around, we’re tweaking things a bit, bringing something new to our online multiplayer. Our Assault class is still the frontline run and gun class, and considering the havoc and fallen team members someone will see while on the frontlines, the Assault soldier now has medic abilities. That’s right, all the abilities such as medkits and defibrillators typically found on the Medic class are now incorporated into Assault. It makes sense that the class on the frontline will be able to revive fallen team mates, right? Right! Remember, you can play it your way, so if you want to customize your Assault soldier more towards medic abilities or towards serious gunplay, it’s totally up to you.

Engineers are returning in Battlefield 3, bringing back the class in charge of making repairs to the various vehicles on the battlefield. On the other hand, the Engineer is very adept at taking down vehicles as well - this class includes RPGs that can take down armored targets that can’t be destroyed by bullets alone, or even building facades that enemy combatants may be using to take cover. Add the fact that an Engineer’s arsenal includes Carbine weapons, you get an extremely versatile multiplayer class that can truly move like a butterfly and sting like a bee.

The Support class makes its return in Battlefield 3, incorporating the ability to use light machine guns and can lay down heavy fire, allowing him to become a serious mobile weapons platform. "Support has always been about heavy infantry firepower from his LMG," says Alan Kertz, Senior Multiplayer Designer at DICE. "It’s a role that we’ve wanted to feel different than Assault’s running and gunning."

Recon traditionally has been seen as just a sniper," Kertz said. "We wanted to change that perception, so we’ve built several completely new teamplay oriented gadgets specifically for the Recon class so he can be a team player, even if he’s sitting on the top of Wookie Mountain." We’ll talk more about these toys and how they work in a blog post a bit further down the road."

Ugh. More "non" news. :( They trickle out info sooooooo slowly. There's nothing new in here, is there?

I only check about once a week...seems most of this thread has turned into a pissing contest. I'll check back when a new thread starts when BF3 releases....

yesss, seems they are pulling a lot from 2142, which is more or less the best thing they could possibly do.

2142 had a lot to offer. I miss it...

I bought it used off somebody way back in the day and when I tried to register the serial EA basically told me too bad. The guy I bought it from couldn't remember his account so I was shit out of luck. I was pretty devastated. I traded him my copy of STALKER for it :(

Isn't it on steam?

Also, 2142 removed most air to air combat, thank goodness. Sadly, missiles did home in on other gunships...so per usual, attack gunships are used for air to air pissing matches, transports for taking one person to the ground. Friggen annoying. The component I hated in BF2 the most was the fighters...in 2142, air combat was thankfully scaled down, but not totally gone. BC2 fixes nothing.

Make choppers have different hit boxes - people firing AA guns at the right place get an easier kill...and remove air to air bullshit. It adds....nothing. Choppers in BC2 are a total annoyance. They're either misused, or someone good gets in one and just rapes.

But hey, I doubt I'll get BF3 - I'm just jaded with multiplayer gaming altogether.

The ground AA in BF2 was shit. It either was to difficult to aim/track a fast moving jet or took to long to lock and by the time it did lock you had a bomb up your ass. The little bit of BC2 Iv played the AA is somewhat better but thats due to the lack of jets. the chain guns are easy because you can fill the sky with lead and you will eventually hit something.

Hopefully BF3 has improved ground AA such as stationary missile launchers that lock on fast enough to be worth the risk of getting in or single use stinger missiles that can be unlocked.

Weakspots on aircraft is a great idea and I also hope that gets implemented not only on aircraft but also on tanks, etc.

The only people who hated jets in bf2 sucked at flying. Sorry but it's true.

Agree. Loved the jets, especially when there was a good pilot on the other side. Otherwise it just became too easy to bomb the shit out of ground targets.

The only people who hated jets in bf2 sucked at flying. Sorry but it's true.

Need I remind you that regardless of one's flying abilities in game...there were at most 2 jets per side normally...and repsawn rates were slower. So if someone got in and crashed right away...no jet for the team. And let's not forget that 10 people camped for the jet. Forget that their team was busy losing 4 flags all at once. They wanted the damn jet. And if they didn't get the jet themselves, they'd rage.

No. To hell with that. Goodbye jets.

Agree. Loved the jets, especially when there was a good pilot on the other side. Otherwise it just became too easy to bomb the shit out of ground targets.

And that's what happened. Someone got the jet and crashed, and an F-18 decides to rain on your friggen parade. Forget the two stingers you just shot at it. Forget the jet respawning, the F-18 pilot knows the respawn times, circles and destroys it as it respawns. It was overpowered. Moreover, it wasn't idiot proof. And in an online game, you have to account for that. No game should be decided by one person like that.

That happens with all vehicles in battlefield games. I remember when I first played 1942 multiplayer everyone just fought over the vehicles.

Jets and Helicopters were a fucking blast to fly around in. I only played with a group of friends though, not on any public servers, so we would just fuck around. I think this was just the demo too, quite a few years ago.

Also, not sure if this has been posted already.. quickly glanced at the last five pages (40ppp). Saw this on Reddit.

ok, so kill it completely? Weapon balance and properly moderated server are the solutions. The servers I played on didn't have that problem, at least not for any extened period of time. The offending player would get warned and kicked if they kept it up. Sounds like you want BC3 not BF3. I'm glad you're not on the development team.

The latest DICE blog on Battlefield 3 reveals a few bits and pieces about the game, specifically explaining about the new classes. Medic is gone, as they explain: “all the abilities such as medkits and defibrillators typically found on the Medic class are now incorporated into Assault. It makes sense that the class on the frontline will be able to revive fallen team mates, right?” The class that returns is LMG-toting Support, and that also adds another feature to the game: suppressing fire. “When you lay down fire in close vicinity to an enemy, the incoming barrage will show up as a graphical blur effect on his screen to stress him and let him know it’s not safe to pop out from behind cover. Just as importantly, this mechanic also affects his character’s in-game firing accuracy, making him less of a threat by using real world tactics.” You even get XP for this action. I wonder if that will feel “real” enough to work. I hope so, because it could really make suppressive fire a key tool. I’ll be interested to see it in action.

Welcome to the second installment of the Battleblog, a blog series taking you all the way to the launch of Battlefield 3 on October 25th! In this blog series, you’ll learn more about every aspect of our biggest shooter ever. This time out is a look at the classes found in multiplayer with Senior Mulitplayer Designer Alan Kertz.

Here at DICE, we’re very proud of the team play functionality that we have become known and loved for in the Battlefield series, and we’re continuing to embrace that approach for Battlefield 3, but not without a few upgrades for the new game. In Battlefield 3, we’re making sure each of the four playable classes (Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon) are each completely capable of holding their own in combat. While they each have different specialties, each class is a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.

If you’re that kind of lone wolf player who simply wants to jump in and cook some fools, that’s perfectly fine – we’re making sure each class in Battlefield 3 packs a mean punch on their own, giving you another chance to play it your way. However, we’re also hard at work fine-tuning each class and their unique team play capabilities, so squads in Battlefield 3 will be able to function tightly, giving even more reasons to team play than ever before.

On the other hand, the Engineer is very adept at taking down vehicles as well – this class includes RPGs that can take down armored targets that can’t be destroyed by bullets alone, or even building facades that enemy combatants may be using to take cover.

“Support has always been about heavy infantry firepower from his LMG,” says Alan Kertz, Senior Multiplayer Designer at DICE. “It’s a role that we’ve wanted to feel different than Assault’s running and gunning.”

This brings us to two new features in Battlefield 3: Bipods and Suppressive Fire. Bipods have a very practical use, especially for LMGs, as they provide a substantial increase in stability while laying down a base of fire. Bipods can be deployed anywhere by zooming in with your LMG when prone, or when standing/kneeling in front of suitable supports, such as a window sill. The stability created by deploying a Bipod gives players a massive boost in accuracy and recoil reduction. You’ll be able to unload an entire clip of 200 bullets from your LMG with great accuracy without even letting go of the trigger, all thanks to the Bipod.

Suppressive Fire is a new in-game mechanic that changes how you can play the game. When you lay down fire in close vicinity to an enemy, the incoming barrage will show up as a graphical blur effect on his screen to stress him and let him know it’s not safe to pop out from behind cover. Just as importantly, this mechanic also affects his character’s in-game firing accuracy, making him less of a threat by using real world tactics. Better yet? You get team play experience points for doing so!

“Supported shooting with Bipods and Suppressive Fire finally allows us to achieve an obvious difference between Assault and Support, since the heavy LMGs are not terribly mobile,” explains Kertz. “When deployed with a Bipod, they become an incredibly powerful force. Suppressive Fire forces the enemy to keep their head down and lets the Support gunner pin his enemies in place so teammates can flank.”

Love him or hate him, Recon is the long range sniper class for Battlefield 3 who excels at gathering intel while on the battlefield. His sniper scope gives this class a distinct view of the battlefield, making Recon particularly suited for spotting enemies as seen in Battlefield: Bad Company 2, ensuring your entire team can see the locations of spotted members of the opposing team. “Recon traditionally has been seen as just a sniper,” Kertz said. “We wanted to change that perception, so we’ve built several completely new teamplay oriented gadgets specifically for the Recon class so he can be a team player, even if he’s sitting on the top of Wookie Mountain.” We’ll talk more about these toys and how they work in a blog post a bit further down the road.

Even though each soldier has a default loadout, they’re there for you to completely customize, making sure you’re able to cater to your own unique style so you can play it your way. We’ll be able to talk more about unlocks, persistence and customization later in the Battleblog series, so stay tuned for more on Battlefield 3 soon!

That happens with all vehicles in battlefield games. I remember when I first played 1942 multiplayer everyone just fought over the vehicles.

It was way less of an issue in 1942 than in bf2, since you had more vehicles that were all sort of similarly powered in bf2. Especially because there were no vehicles in bf1942 that were anywhere near as powerful as the jets in bf2. The only thing that would come close, in terms of power, were the choppers in BC2 pre-tracer buffs. As people pointed out, if for whatever reason one jet fighter outlasted the other, a good pilot who kept track of fighter respawn times could own the round without much in terms of opposition.

I miss the b-17 from 1942. I want a nice slow moving bomber with multiple positions that could drop shit tons of bombs and get massive kills. I remember loading it up with friends (both in the b17 and on it's wings) on el alamein and fly to the highest point and bomb the crap out their base. It was funny to see the enemy fighters trying to get up high enough to kill us.

It also looked really cool when you had a bunch of people paradrop off the B17 into a cap point and take it!
