About the flying w/joystick in bf3 - I'm really really worried about this. In BFBC2 the controls were such crap a joystick was useless. You could NOT map throttle to a slider on any joystick. I asked a question to Battlefield on Facebook about this exact issue, and there was no response.

They better have bf2-ish controls for planes/choppers or i'll be uber pissed off. I absolutely hate the dumbed down version, I want there to be skill in flying.

I'm going to assume that jets and helicopters will be joystick friendly. It would be incredibly stupid for them to not be... /looks over at Saitek Cyborg Evo

Hey man, I'm using my Evo, you can't use it. ;)

IIRC, BF2 didn't ship with good joystick support and they had to patch that in. Anyone else remember that? I reeeeeally hope BF3 has decent joystick support. That's half the fun of flying for me.

BF2 controls were dumbed down. The controls in 1942 desert combat were far better !! If you couldn't figure it out, you just couldn't fly them. Once you figured out the controls / sensitivity (they were very twitchy!!!!), everything became so much fun!! The BF2 controls were dumbed down (very slow) for the masses...

Alright , from what I understand vehicles regen armor over time without the aid of repairing? Seriously? someone please tell me this isn't true. Another issue is the spotting system which takes bush wookie camping to a whole new level

What is the purpose of a ghillie suit when you can just prone and remain perfectly hidden.?

it's NOT like oh fuck vehicles at 2% better back up 10 feet and be fully repaired within 5 seconds. you only regen (slowly) from minor damage and if you take too much, your vehicle is disabled.

you can still fire while disabled but you can't move and you bleed health, need an engineer to help.

also that spotting doesn't exist any more, it's purely 2d spotting for infantry.

Nah, it's true vehicles will regen, well, at least the apc or whatever it was in the alpha did, I don't think anyone is sure if air vehicles will. That's an old vid, spotting is supposed to be different now. Also, in the alpha, sniping was worlds away from where it is in BC2, you had to be much more accurate, the scope sways, and bullet drop seemed overtuned.

People who didn't play the alpha should be banned from complaining about features they don't understand.

The vehicle regen was slow as shit and not gamebreaking by any means. You still needed engineers and a competent driver to keep your vehicle alive.

90% of the time someone just charged in with it and died had it disabled or destroyed within 10 seconds. get fixed, immediately panic and floor it into the nearest tree, get stuck, blow up.

fucking retarded.

It was great when it got stuck on invisible trees and in random holes for no reason.

seriously, I didnt see one person who knew how to drive the fucking thing, just went in bc2 style and sat there getting hit by rockets. When i hopped in that thing i fucking destroyed. keep the damn thing moving people!

I have a Q6600 + 4GB RAM + GTX460x2 (SLI, and yeah, I'm severely CPU bottlenecked), but I plan on getting a new motherboard, i7-2600k, 8-16GB RAM, and an SSD.

Will that be enough for pretty much maxed settings at 1920x1080, or should I also look into getting a GTX580 or something?

That sounds far less intolerable than the traditional regen-health.

Then please enlignten me as I would like to know the following

Can you see across the map as a sniper in BF3? (ie BC2) BF2 was never like this and kept camp happy snipers from pitching a tent due to the distance fog that was used in the old engine. Banned from complaining give me a fucking break ? Regen has no place in vehicles period! slow or not. I've seen more absurd complaints in games such as GUI layouts (UT3) and mouse movements which can be addressed via ini.

Edited for clarity

The fog of war was one of the worst parts about BF2.

If your CPU is clocked over 3ghz (3.2 - 3.4 range) you are not severely bottlenecked. 460x2 should be great for 1080p at near max settings (you may not be able to max AA/AF and whatnot). I would definitely go CPU upgrade before GPU.

I recall a quote from a DICE employee stating that if you can run BC2 well on high, you should have little problems with BF3. I will try and find that quote and return.

yes, and it's harder to snipe in BF3. you put yourself at risk of being spotted if you use a high power scope and you aren't as lethal up close. i enjoyed using a bolt action sniper without a scope though, was pretty fun since it was dead accurate and very nearly a 1 shot up close.

yes you can take the scope off your sniper rifle. you actually don't even have to use a sniper, can use of the unlockable weapons that works for any class, like the dinky MP7.

That sounds far less intolerable than the traditional regen-health.

also, soldier wise, completely uninterrupted, it's probably around 40 seconds from critical back to healthy, longer if you come under any fire at all because if you're being suppressed, it stops the health regen. it takes over 5 seconds for it to actually even start coming back.

a medkit will probably have you golden in the time it takes for it to even start unaided.

hmm, that's a pretty good estimate. BF3 seems better optimized on the CPU front than BC2, it will not quite so fast become the bottleneck but it certainly can. at 3ghz, my q6600 was right at the edge, sometimes i was GPU bound, sometimes CPU. if you're above 3, it should be a bit more comfortable.

i think it ran better than BC2 if anything, and that was without optimized driverhax and possibly more optimized features.

My Q6600 is stuck at 2.4GHz for whatever reason (lame EVGA 680i SLI board, I assume, I tried every settings and voltage bump possible). EVGA Precision reports the GPU usage at 25-30%, so I'd think it's pretty badly bottlenecked with the stock clocks. :(

I thought they said it was still 3D spotting but you had to have line of sight for it to show? Pretty sure that's what DICE said, but maybe they changed their minds again.

So then what's the point of it?

I thought they said it was still 3D spotting but you had to have line of sight for it to show? Pretty sure that's what DICE said, but maybe they changed their minds again.

So, a soldier in direct Line of Sight that is spotted will have a 3d red marker. If he moves behind cover or concealment, including vegetation, the 3d red marker will disappear. He will always be on the minimap. Vehicles are always fully 3D spotted, and LOS does not apply since they are larger more important targets with less threats (and it plain did not work to have jets flying around who couldn't see the tank you spotted for him to take out).

This lets you essentially "nudge" your buddy to tell him about a target, or point out a sniper on a hill you see but cannot engage (with your shotgun for example). But it prevents players from using 3D spotting as a wall hack.

Additionally, the primary motivator for the change is that 3D spots that you cannot see are not threats. We noticed that players would focus on 3D spots over everything else, meaning they would ignore people in line of sight. It's far less confusing when the 3D spot on a soldier can only be seen if you can see the soldier.

pretty sure the last i read from twitter was that only vehicles get the 3d spot effect. it'll be looked over in beta either way.

Apparently so the vehicle can be disabled but retain small amount of health so it can still fire its weapons.

Makes sense though -- if you disable a humvee and it's sitting in a burned out lump if an engineer comes along and spends some time repairing it. I think that should be a valid strategy.

Now of course there needs to be a timeout on HOW long a burned out vehicle sits there, and of course how many vehicles are allowed per side per map.

If you hit a land mine with your front left wheel, you should be able to sit and spin in tripod mode just fine.

I believe once a vehicle is disabled, the health regen will not make it driveable again though an engineer can repair it back from that. Once a vehicle is destroyed though, there's no repping the wreck back to useable.

If a vehicle is disabled then it loses health. It does NOT regen health when it gets disabled unless repaired by an engineer. A couple decent players will make short work of destroying vehicles in this game. The vehicle health regen is very slow and not an issue.

fucking retarded.

Must have been a CoD player not accustomed to using vehicles.
