Battlefield 3: No Win XP Support!!

Good, people still use Win XP? No excuse now Win 7 is so good

It's a 9 1/2 year old OS, I wouldn't expect new games/software to work with it anymore.

Please join us in the year 2007. Enjoy the view.

It's absurd to expect game devs to support an OS that is near 10 years old and has been passed by two successors.

GOOD.

back when BF2 came out it was one of the first games to be DX9 only, about 3 years after DX9 was released. DX9 and 32bit need to die, 64bit has been superior since Vista and games are lagging way behind, DX11 when used correctly can bring not only new graphics to the table but also some good performance increases.

It's also a step in the right direction to separate consoles and PC games, this sort of news makes me think that BF3 might have a glimmer of hope to be a true PC title. Only time will tell.

i still use xp, because i have ZERO reasons to change.
I dont want to format, and windows 7 is not that cheap where I am

Now you have a reason to change. There are tons of places where one can buy 7 digitally for cheap.

There's no reason for a 10 year old OS to hold everyone back. We have 5 year old consoles doing that.

The more devs that push for dx11 being a standard, the better. I would not go back to winxp unless threatened or paid to do so.

And you don't have to.

Not saying you are, but just no whining as DX9 in games continues to get dropped in the future.

i didnt buy my iPad - it was a gift from my Mum and Stepfather. Why would I spend $1100 on a tablet I have no need for?

snap

revoked

Yeah. Suuuuuuuure it was a gift. Sure. Win7 is $50 a license in combo pack anyway. Xp is horrible since vista.

I got no problem with that. No reason for anyone to be using XP anymore.

If you don't want to dump XP then set up a partition on your hard drive and install Windows 7 so you can dual boot. I did this when Vista came out. Once I got Windows 7 and was pleased with it I dropped XP altogether.

You can also migrate your old XP install into a virtual machine. No real need to dual boot.

If you stick with XP, you have 0 reason to complain about being left behind as well. XP users have PLENTY of games to play, allow us to have at least a few modern games to enjoy as well.

I never said you bought your ipad. I said your 32GB ipad is also not that cheap where you are. $1,100 sure doesn't sound cheap to me.

If you don't need the ipad, sell it? Or have Mum and Stepfather buy you 7?

Double revoked?

excuse me, why are you trolling me and being a douche? I dont know about you, but im not going to sell a gift that my family gave me. I dont have rich parents, they bought it for me because I helped them move from the country into town and they certainly cant afford to buy 7 of them. Stop being an asshole. What does the price of my iPad have to do with windows 7 and xp?
I didnt complain about still running XP at all, I stated the reasons why (at the moment) I see no need to upgrade to 7.
Windows 7 is not cheap here in New Zealand, I have a small cap (to download a digital copy) and no money to buy an external HDD to backup nor the actual OS itself.
xp still does everything I need it to do. Now if Blizzard decide that diablo 3 will be 7 only, then I will have my reason :)

BF2 was also the first game in the series to drop Win98/Me support as well.

Now, since FrostBite2 is supposedly D3D11-only, does that mean I'm going to have to replace my GF280 with a GeForce 4xx or Radeon 5xxx/6xxx series card? Didn't I see something about D3D11 being backward compatible with D3D10.x chipsets by disabling certain features (i.e. tesellation)?

Looking at the steam stats on OS installs... about 1 out of 4 gamers are still XP. That is a heck of a lot of gamers to not be able to market a game too.

Yea I'm pretty sure I saw BF3 is being based on D3D10 with D3D11 being optional, so a GTX 280 will probably work.

That's now. By time BF3 is released it will be maybe significantly less and dropping fast. Besides everyone with Windows 7 and Vista is gonna want BF3 to see a real game take advantage of their systems.

I hope there is prone in BF3
Learn how to play, and you won't have to camp for kills. :p

I don't think the guy you're flaming is the one being rude. He didn't say to buy 7 ipad's, he said to buy Win7.

This is no different than those who were all hellbent on clinging to their Socket 754/939 + AGP setups when Socket AM2 + PCI-e would have made them change out their mobo, CPU, GPU and possibly RAM. At some point it was going to be inevitable that they were going to be forced into upgrading. Now is a pretty good time to start upgrading, RAM prices are sweeter than they have been in over a year and GPU wars are helping drive video card prices down to where a good gaming card can be had without having to donate a body part.

Seriously, most of the reasoning around here for not upgrading to Win7 is pretty weak at best and the excuses are getting pretty stale. (Money issues are perfectly understandable)

BF3 will be DX10 compatible. It just won't have some of the advanced features of DX11 naturally. This was spoken by the same guy who tweeted when I was at the GDC in Oct of last year in SF.

"XP & DX9 is _not_ supported"

Yet the Xbox 360 is DX9.

from what i understand it is DX9 and OpenGL derived not hard lined DX9 like a discrete graphics card would be.......it was based off DX9 hardware but uses it's own blend of DX/OGL

wait wut? a console component with more flexibility than a discrete graphics card? blasphemy!

on topic: once you use Windows 7 day in and out, you realize just how slow, bloated and buggy and downright fugly Windows XP is......

A lot of gamers have proved that for a really good game they're willing to upgrade their rigs, it has to happen sometime anyway so it might as well be for a good game.

Also you have to understand that by going back to your roots and offering something that is of high quality that you increase your revenue in other areas, in other words a bigger proportion of the DX11 crowd will be interested.

Wider audience doesn't always equal more sales, sometimes it's a case of making your game more appealing (good) rather than dumbing it down for the biggest audience, while we have games like WoW show us that mass market appeal is good, we also have games like counter strike which also show us that making a well balanced game that rewards skill and playtime is also attractive.

"Frostbite 2 is primarily developed for DX11. XP & DX9 is _not_ supported, 64-bit OS is recommended. Lots of time to upgrade if you havent!"

I think this is def a good move for EA to drop support for the older operating system.

good that means it wont be a direct console port and that the console version and pc version wont be built on the same engine.
