Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

small, tight quarters, infantry only map. i'll play it when i'm looking for a change of pace, but people who don't like the COD formula will probably not like this map.

Whats wrong with that? I thought the best maps in BF2 were the city infantry maps. Sharqi Peninsula, Mashtuur City and Karkand. Infantry only karkand servers were my favorite.

bf2 was out before the modern warfare series. not sure why people keep saying "its like cod" not you specifically, just in general.

I can confirm the scrabble free game on my android phone let me change my origin name. Took longer to download and install the app then to make the change.

Glad I saved myself a 30 minute wait to talk with chat support.

i also loved the BF2 IO servers, particularly Karkand. but they played nothing like COD. they were wide-open maps and the gameplay was very different. judging by the way Metro played, and by the looks of that video, it's safe to say that map will feel a little like COD. i'm fine with it...i'm one of the few people that still enjoys the 'COD formula'.

i'm curious to see what soldier name BF3 pics when we can finally play. i imagine it will use our new Origin master ID. *crosses fingers*

Everyone has to remember that Dice/EA is a business and their goal is to make money. The market for a COD type of gamer is huge. Dice and EA cannot make everyone happy but they are trying to appeal to both demographics. They have the huge sandbox conquest maps for BF veterans and they have the smaller infantry focused maps to try to woo the COD croud. They said that DLC will keep coming for a long time, so you can guarantee that some more big conquest maps will be released. If you are a BF veteran and do not care for the COD infantry maps don't fucking play them. Stick to your conquest map and bitch about how bad this game is and how DICE and EA didn't kiss your ass personally. Some people are just never happy.

IMO this game is going to be a great blend of Maps and play styles (run and gun, tactical). If I don't like a map, I just won't play it but you damn sure won't hear me bitching about it in one of these threads. DICE and EA cannot please everyone and they are doing their best to deliever a great game.

New Battlefield Blog Post: Battleblog #14: Multiplayer Map Reveal, Part II

Friday, 14 October 2011 07:00

Ready to see the final five multiplayer maps included in Battlefield 3? We talked to the multiplayer team at DICE about the concept behind each map, and how they decided which maps made the cut into the final game.

GRAND BAZAAR

WORKING TITLE> BAZAAR
DICE INTERNAL DESIGNATION> MP001
SUPPORTED GAME MODES> ALL
BRIEF> TIGHT URBAN COMBAT

FICTION> THE BATTLE FOR CENTRAL TEHRAN HAS REACHED ITS SECOND WEEK, AND WHAT WAS EXPECTED TO BE OVER WITHIN DAYS NOW CONTINUES AS RUSSIAN AND U.S. FORCES CLASH FOR CONTROL OVER THIS ANCIENT CITY.

DESIGN THOUGHTS> We knew we wanted to do something very urban in the city center of Tehran. The fiction has you coming in two weeks after fighting started, so the tight and narrowly built city has a great deal of destruction already when you spawn into the game. Grand Bazaar is a classically mirrored map where both sides have very similar pathways, sideways, and possibilities to traverse heights to get a better view of the action. It’s a very short range close quarter combat map where shotguns tend to be favored.

CASPIAN BORDER

WORKING TITLE> FOREST
DICE INTERNAL DESIGNATION> MP007
SUPPORTED GAME MODES> ALL
BRIEF> VEHICLE WARFARE IN LARGE VALLEY

FICTION> A RECON RUSSIAN FORCE HAS SET UP CAMP ON THE TURKMENISTAN SIDE OF THE IRANIAN BORDER AND PROCEEDED TO TAKE OVER THE HEAVILY BUILT UP BORDER CHECKPOINT.

DESIGN THOUGHTS> Caspian Border was meant to encapsulate the classic Battlefield all-out vehicle warfare gameplay, and also to be a lush and green contrast to the more urban and desert maps in Battlefield 3. The border control splitting the map in two was introduced to add an interesting break both visually and gameplay wise in the otherwise beautiful and open landscape. Caspian Border is one of the obvious map choices if you are after the full vehicle experience, as base distances are generally too long to cover by foot. Pretty much every type of vehicle is available in this map.

SEINE CROSSING

WORKING TITLE> PARIS
DICE INTERNAL DESIGNATION> MP011
SUPPORTED GAME MODES> ALL
BRIEF> VEHICLE/INFANTRY COMBAT IN DOWNTOWN PARIS

FICTION> THE AMERICAN INVASION OF RUSSIAN OCCUPIED PARIS IS IN FULL MOTION. THE UPSCALE AREA IN THE 7TH DISTRICT OF PARIS SERVES AS THE BATTLEGROUND.

DESIGN THOUGHTS> Seine Crossing has two sections of Paris split in the middle by the river Seine. Seine Crossing has a number of larger roads for vehicles to patrol, while infantry can sneak through tight alleyways and climb staircases to reach second or third levels inside buildings to reach a better tactical position – unless the enemy takes down the building facades. The final M-COM stations in Rush are placed inside a bank building, which is the largest indoor environments of this map and forces the attackers to slightly change tactics.

NOSHAHR CANALS

WORKING TITLE> CANALS
DICE INTERNAL DESIGNATION> MP017
SUPPORTED GAME MODES> ALL
BRIEF> MIXED COMBAT IN INDUSTRIAL SETTING

FICTION> U.S. MARINES LAUNCH A STRIKE ON A MAJOR HARBOR BY THE NOSHAHR CANALS ON THE IRANIAN COAST. THE STRATEGICALLY IMPORTANT PORT ALLOWS FOR DEEP WATER VESSELS TO OFFLOAD ESSENTIAL MATERIALS.

DESIGN THOUGHTS> When we set out to do Noshahr Canals, we wanted to contrast the urban and rural with something more industrial. So we set Noshahr Canals up as an industrial harbor, featuring a mix of infantry, land vehicle, and boat gameplay. The attackers in Rush start out on an carrier ship and can reach the beachhead by amphibious vehicles, boats, and helicopters. All of the bases on the map have an industrial theme but still have different styles, like a train yard, dry dock, or airfield. Compared with the larger vehicle maps in the game, this allows for tighter infantry combat.

KHARG ISLAND

WORKING TITLE> KHARG
DICE INTERNAL DESIGNATION> MP018
SUPPORTED GAME MODES> ALL
BRIEF> AMPHIBIOUS ASSAULT

FICTION> KHARG ISLAND IS IRAN’S BIGGEST OIL EXPORT TERMINAL. IF THE U.S. CAN STAKE CONTROL OVER THIS ISLAND, IT WILL DENY THE RUSSIANS CRITICAL ACCESS TO IRANIAN OIL RESERVES.

DESIGN THOUGHTS> Kharg Island is our second map with boat gameplay. Thematically it’s representing an assault against Kharg island in the Persian sea, an industrialized island not far from the Iranian coast. The map is slightly more focused on vehicles with longer distance between flags than for example Noshahar Canals. In the Rush game mode, the beach assault begins on the coastline with a well-defended beach you need to break through to create a beachhead for further attacks on the island, before it opens up wider in the later part of the map.

THIS IS HOW WE DO IT
Creating levels at DICE is a democratic affair, and a process that is ruled in equal amounts by art and gameplay design. This in order to not only get a balanced mix of gameplay variations in the game, but also a variety of visual impressions.

At the start of the design process, the artists mocked up a number of creative briefs together with level designers Inge Jøran Holberg, Diego Jimenez and Niklas Åstrand. These briefs explain the gameplay type and idea, story and visual theme. Everyone on the Battlefield 3 development team was encouraged to vote for their favorites among the briefs and also add ideas of their own. From there, prototypes of the favorite levels were produced in so called “pods” -- pairs with a level designer and artist per map -- so the team could play them to see which ones were the most promising.

Then, the team as a whole weighed the maps against one another to see which ones would make the most compelling and diverse package to ship the game with. We finally ended up with the 9 cherry-picked multiplayer maps you can read all about here today and in yesterday’s blog post. They’re the best of the best, the maps that shone the brightest in our playtests, and the ones that combined bring out everything we want both veteran and new Battlefield players to experience in Battlefield 3 multiplayer.

Oh, and did you know there's a sand castle on one of our maps in Battlefield 3? This classic easter egg has been present in many Battlefield maps through the years. See if you can find it!

Three of the five here are pretty huge. Six of the nine maps support classic open Conquest gameplay, while the other are close quarters rush and conquest maps.

Canals sound super sick :)

All of the maps are honestly great, even Metro is a great map. I too, cannot wait!

What kit is everyone going to focus on?
In the beta on PC I only played engi but for retail I think I want to go hard on support to try and unlock the mortar at the get-go.

My buddies and I already pre-ordered a 64 player Branzone server...cannot wait to get it rocking!

Assault and support...use assault most of the time, but a m249 on defense at a choke point is just too damn good. Funny, I didn't play engi at all, seemed a bit pointless on Metro, although once they unlocked Caspian I wished I had!

I want to get my unlocks as fast as possible so either Assault or Support for me.

There are so many unlocks for classes and vehicles it's gonna be a blast going back and forth. This game has epic win written all over it. I just hope I can be patient enough through the first few weeks of bugs and server congestion.

support all the way for me...there always seems to be a shortage of ammo droppers, and I love to set c4 booby traps. Man, I set this one at the subway entrance of Metro at the bottom of the cave where the plywood wall is. I dropped one explosive on each side and one in the middle. I hid in the corner next to the train, and when i saw muzzle flash near my c4 I set it off, and killed like 4 people, lol. My buddy on vent was on the other side towards B, and said "shit, was that you?" and I was "yup". :D This game will be filled with memorable moments like that when retail goes live.

support here, once you get the M249 and C4 you are a force to be reckoned with, then you can add the mortar too, then engin enough to get AA atleast, and assault for the defib

not sure where recon will fall, will be based on unlocks

engineer on vechicle maps, assualt/support on IO maps. i'm not much of a recon player unless i'm just screwing around.

Support definitely ended up being my favorite. I can see the "support is overpowered" whining coming already.

Serious questions (not trolling):

- What does the gameplay feel like in comparison to past BF iterations?
Is it more like BC2? Any old that old BF2 feel what-so-ever?

- In general, how does the gun play feel?
Recoil? Are people still bullet sponges with anything other than a head shot? General feel?

Is there a good sense of action on larger maps?
Is there a good sense of "impact" in general, with explosions, gunshots etc.?

Something about some things in general seems a little "weak" to me.

- Visually, it seems (according that vid posted) a little less stellar than what we've seen up until the BETA launched. How close to those pre-BETA visuals does it/will it actually look?

I've watched ever minute of footage to be found, and read through most of this thread, but I gotta be honest... no idea what to really make of BF3 at this point. I liked BC2, but it was too limiting in design, and some of how it felt in general I didn't like.

I've played BF since it's inception, and don't want to compare it to past iterations, I want to appreciate BF3 for what it might have to offer... if it actually has something worthwhile to offer.

Since I'd be dropping $60 on the CE in order to get Karkand (I'd have to, one of my favorite maps of all time), I really want to get a better idea of how BF3 really feels and plays.

I think the lack of VOIP is a bit retarded, but I never use it anyway, so I'm not worried about that. A good squad can work together and read one another's movements anyway, and act accordingly. At least, it used to be lack that with people I've played with back in the day. Today, I know it's "every man for himself". Eh...

I don't know... totally burnt on military shooters. But, it's BF. There just seems to be "something missing" here, with BF3, and I cant quite put my finger on it. It just doesn't feel... "alive".

P.S.
Oh, and seriously... what's the deal with what Origin is reading off your hard drives?
Has that actually changed at all in their EULA? Or is there still any concern of personal privacy?

Honestly, all opinions on you questions would be based on Beta gameplay. It's been said over and over again that the game that will be released is going to be much better than the beta in every way. A few pages back there's a link to an article by a reviewer who played a version very close to what it will be on release, and he said the beta was a mistake, as the release version is a LOT better than the beta. Night and day.

Gameplay feels like a cross between BF2, BC2, and MOH. The rush mode is ripped straight out of BC2, so rush mode in bf3 is nearly identical. The only difference I have seen was the introduction of planes to certain rush maps. The gun dynamics feel a lot more like BC2 Vietnam (where it was improved over vanilla BC2) and MOH. I think that part atleast has more to do with the updated game engine than anything else. Conquest mode feels exactly like old BF2, just with updated visuals and the occasional building collapse.

The hit registry is much improved, and the guns have some serious recoil. The only exceptions seem to be the sub machine guns like the PP-2000 and UMP-45 which are drastically overpowered in the beta and need a fix. Holding the sights on target for consecutive shots is very difficult for burst fire, even when using a bipod. Full auto with an LMG gets you absolutely no where, even with a bipod. It will help suppress the enemy, but if you hold down the trigger you might get 1 hit out of 100.

Enemies only seem to be bullet sponges when firing certain weapons at longer ranges, basically anything that isn't a bolt action rifle. This is the way it should be.

Didn't support unlock the UMP? If so, then yeah, it's fucking overpowered.

They said they were going to change the UMP "a little bit", but honestly I'm guessing it's still going to be OP in the final.

EDIT: Maybe it was the PDW. That was OP too.

How does this guy have a job doing that?.. He is about as articulate as a wet piece of cardboard, he can't even string a coherent sentence together for fucks sake, very annoying to listen to, a total retard with an IQ of 10 by the sounds of things.

Also, every single fucking thing he said was Captain Obvious material.

"uhh....it's uhh...in a city...uhh....more close quarters than more open maps...uhh"

Yeah, thanks. Please kill yourself.

Quick question:

How/where do you begin the pre-load?

Just bit the bullet and pre-ordered digitally, and the pre-load begins on the 21st, so...
...do/can you pre-load via Origin itself?

Or does it have to be through EA/Origin's site?

I notice through Origin that the product key is also "x"'d out. Is that normal?

Interesting, there are 3 people in the tank in that video. I guess the 3rd person is a spotter.

I believe the ump is not class specific

Feels like a spongier MoH

Recoil is unpleasant on ARs, and the use of ACOGs makes it even less manageable. And yes, the damage model in the beta seemed questionable - some weapons required a sensible amount of shots and others an extraordinary number. I could not stand the M16A3.

Action and impact is great.

your link was the first time I've ever been on twitter's website but, its very important imo especially for me since my internet is sketchy.
