Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

I am psyched for some 64-player goodness. My roommate and I were thinking about uninstalling this weekend because Metro made us rage so much.

Crazy server lag right now. Can't walk more than three feet.
They're going to have to shut down the servers and restart them.

The most of the bugs are fixed on Caspian but the lag renders it unplayable for now.
The people at work aren't missing anything, by the time you guys get home all should be well, maybe.

I was so excited to finally get on Caspian...and then the lag just killed it! Every server I got on; many in the servers were commenting on it so I'm guessing it's not just me...

caspian plays completely fucking different from metro, shit is ridiculous

and my +1 ghz overclock q6600 weeps... holding on for ivy bridge but just barely

I just played Caspian for the 1st time. Amazing fun, looks great, plays great, lag wasn't bad at all even though I played on an Aussie server (I'm on west coast US) that was 64 player.

I know others are complaining about the playable map size on some of the new maps. Well, if they play like Caspian, I think they'll be quite fun. Vehicles are needed and there's plenty of room to maneuver without the need to spend 10 minutes sprinting to the other side of the map.

I played all the BF games a ton (and I mean a TON) and I don't like running around maps for an hour. Heck, I remember pushing W on certain maps and bring up the chat console, it would make the run key stick so you could sit back and watch your player run across the map for 20 minutes. I don't miss that.

That map is win sauce compared to Metro, and I think Metro is pretty fun.

ow my fucking cpu, should improve a little with new drivers and retail, hopefully. min fps i saw was about 35, usually 40+, feels pretty good and doesn't seem to fucking stutter like metro for whatever reason.

please ivy bridge, hurry up :(

Wow you encountered stuttering on Metro. I avg 100 FPS on Metro and have never once felt a hiccup.

I am averaging around 75-85 FPS on Caspian with zero problems also

Knife kills are hella more gratifying now compared to previous games and the fact that it only works if your behind/beside your victim makes it even better...makes me wonder how knife fights will play out now.

Caspian is the map that should have been originally released for beta as it's maps like it that show BF3 to be a true successor in the BF franchise. Metro is more of a nod to bc2 and run and gun type gameplay....still all fun to me but Caspian is a much more gratifying experience.

I completely agree with the knife kills. The animations are great along with the sound of plunging a knife into their chest. Comin away with their dog tags is a great reward for your stalking skills.

Agree completely about Caspian. They should have released both maps for the entire beta to give the veteran BF players what they want and attempt to draw in the COD crowd in the process.

I don't like console gaming but I feel sorry for them not being able to play Caspian. Such a fun map.

Can't wait to get home, My Friends and i have been slowly getting bored with Metro so this will be a nice change of pace, im just not looking forward to the 15 day gap from the beta being shut down to release :(

It took me about 3-4 slashes with the knife to kil someone. The guy was reloading though and didn't switch to his pistol, so I doubt you'll see that happen very often.

Top 10 Battlefield 3 Open Beta issues and how we are addressing them

BY: HBrun POSTED: Oct 06, 2011, 05:04PM

We're more than half way through the open beta and thrilled to see so many people still enjoying the game while continuing to give us great feedback. As part of our dedication to showing you how your feedback is directly affecting and improving Battlefield 3, here are the latest Top-Ten Community Issues that we're addressing.

1. Squad issues: Cannot play with friends within same squad, squads get split up onto opposite teams, etc.
There will be improved squad functionality in the retail game (including but not limited to): the ability to create squads prior to launching into a game, sticking with your squad when joining a game and continuing together through future games (If team balance on the server allows it), inviting friends to a squad and changing squads once in game.

2. Regarding additional Open Beta content and fixes/patches for consoles, including PlayStation 3 issues with chat and party systems
While we would like to patch the Open Beta, DICE is currently focusing its available resources on polishing the retail game.

3. Will DICE have enough time to iron out everything by release?
Please see General Manager Karl Magnus Troedsson's blog post regarding this question.

4. Can we have ability to change settings/options before deployment into match on PC?
The ability to modify your settings via the deploy screen has been added into the retail game.

5. Issues with terrain stability and "falling into the map" on Operation Métro
This has been fixed for the beta via a server side update.

6. Kill cam sometimes zooms out too far or outside the map
This has been fixed for the launch of the retail game.

7. A bug that sometimes keeps some players from being able to sprint
This has been fixed for the launch of the retail game.

8. Screen flickering/stuttering. Blue screen remains after respawn. Game locks up after deploying C4 (360)
This has been fixed for the launch of the retail game.

9. Downed bodies appear to be dead, but are not
The DICE team has been looking into this issue - which is caused by a combination of incidents in a confined area - and are working hard to address the issue for the launch of the retail game.

10. Why is the hit detection seemingly different from Battlefield: Bad Company 2?
The netcode is one of the many things that we are testing as part of the Open Beta and is not necessarily reflective of the final retail game. The DICE team appreciates and has heard the feedback you've provided and is further optimizing online play.

Don't forget to keep submitting your ideas and issues to the Battlelog forums. Thanks to your help and participation we're on track to make Battlefield 3 our greatest game to date!

Good to hear!

OK, so I'm sure there are posts out there like mine, but I want to share my opinons.

I was playing bf3 on the 360, and I didn't really like it. So I downloaded Origin(didn't really want to) and wow..what a cluster fuck. Unless I'm missing something, it isn't as smooth as steam at all. Go here, click on this, click on that...oh you want to play bf3? Click some more over here...then hit alt enter to go full screen. I've yet to find a place where I can adjust the video settings. Maybe you can't because it's a Beta?

Anyway, besides that, BF3 is WAAAAYYYYY better on the PC. I know most of you alreayd knew that...but I wish console fanboys...people who truly think the console is better....I really wish they could spend just one hour with a PC and BF3.....they would never look back.

Anyway, just thought I'd share.

I'd like to see a CPU benchmark for BF3 including numbers for an i5-750 and an i5-2500K to see how much of a difference there is, and if it would justify an upgrade for me since I can pick up a 2500K for really cheap at Micro Center.

all of that is directly related to BF3 and the beta, not Origin.

I wouldn't worry about upgrading just yet. Check out you usage in game right now.

1600x900 ultra settings my Q9650 @ 4.3ghz is only at ~70% usage. No need to upgrade.

BC2 My CPU is used more. I run an average 85-95% usage.

It's all about GPU, even a single gtx580 is at 100% usage in this game.

I haven't seen it mentioned directly, so I'm mentioning it now...

...am I the only one who has noticed a drastic difference difference between the visuals in the beta, compared to all the supposed "real-time" gameplay vids released before-hand?

The beta looks like complete shit; the visuals look nothing like any of those supposedly non-rendered live gameplay vids that were seen before the beta launched.

There are some who'd say, "It's a beta", but the fact is, unless DICE has stated that all the textures were not included for what ever reason (like when the demo of Crysis was released, for example), that it looks fucking nowhere close to any vids seen before.

And yeah, that matters. I don't drop almost $2k into building systems to be looking at something that's akin to a cross between BF2 and BF:BC2.

Hmmmm, so I should try to be [H]ard and squeeze every last mhz out of my GPU then...

@StreamsOfInferno- They are holding tessellation and a few things back from the beta..

also, you were seeing the single player campaign in all of those gameplay videos... Not MP.

if you don't think These Kind of visuals look good though, you need to invent a time machine and go into the future and play some games there.

Because it looks pretty damn good imo...

this Beta actually exploited an instability in my gpu overclocks when no other game has, i had to lower them a bit. of course...i'm keeping in mind that this code isn't finalized so i'll play with it again once the retail game is released.

there are a few caspian border servers up without passwords, are these the hacked ones?

Caspian border is unlocked for the weekend.
This is literally a major mind changer for me. I played one round at home when I stopped by after lunch, and it's majorly different. My only major "complaint" is if I see a tank as a recon, i'm screwed.

For some reason, my neither of my GPUs are being used at 100%.

Running SLI 580s and an i5-2500k at 4.8 Ghz. I hope it's not a PSU issue >_<

edit: This is only on Caspian Border, by the way,
