Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

I dunno man, I have been smoked by single sniper shots all day long. I am talking about 100% and then dead.

Word. Sniper seems plenty powerful to me. There was an a$$hole on Caspian outside the US base with his crosshairs trained on the pilot position in the AH-1Z. As soon as someone would get in, pop, one shot and you're dead. Strong bulletproofing on the AH-1Z glass that a long distance sniper can easily take you out.

Pretty bizarre scenario as well with everyone standing around the helo not willing to get in because they would be shot and the sniper not willing to change his aim and risk missing a shot to the pilot.

And nobody wanted the challenge of taking out the sniper

Disabling HT does in fact fix the stuttering, pushes your CPU usage to about double though.

Actual CPU usage is nearly identical or even less with HT off. Doesn't seem that way in task manager but that's the trickery of HT at work.

i was getting texture flicker with the nvidia 285.62 drivers. reverted back to 285.38 beta drivers and all seems well. performance is identical on my rig too.

Jets need some sort of gameplay boost. Right now, the reward for being a good jet pilot is the novelty of flying a jet. Even the best pilots end up dead last on the leaderboard. While jets are decent anti-helicopter, you still generally have to work very hard for your kills, especially taking down other jets. Taking down a jet in another jet feels like 500 pts to me. Heck, You get 450 just for neutralizing and capturing a flag

True, it's super easy to disable another jet but actually landing the kill is difficult if the other guy is competent.

Why are you confused? You do realize capturing the flag is the whole objective of the game right? It stands to reason why it would be worth a good chunk of points.

The jets will get better over time I think once people get unlocks and people spot more as well as recon's deploying tugs/uavs. These will really help its ground attack ability.

How many C4s to clean kill a fresh tank by the way? Two? I tried one and got a rude surprise :p

I totally get it. Have you been up in the jets? Successfully taking down an enemy jet can take several strafes over a good couple of minutes. It also requires a lot of skill. (A joystick doesn't hurt either.) I'm not complaining at all about the capture points, I'm just saying that jets have got to be hands down the slowest way to earn XP in BF3.

So guys... if I never played any MP shooter - is BF3 good game to start?

And how it's played... it's more tactical, with squads and people acting like soldiers, or is it mindless "kill all that moves" kind of game?

I personally think that BF3 is not a good place to START with MP shooters. I would recommend MW or MW2. A lot of people have commented on the very steep learning curve of BFBC2, and BF3 is just about the same. The problem is that on top of all the basic shooter mechanics, you have to worry about land and aerial vehicles, spotting, classes, etc. There's about 500 ways to score a kill in BF3, and even more ways to earn XP.

In the MW series, you point and click. :) BF3 is awesome, but I could see how a newcomer to online competitive FPS would be completely overwhelmed and frustrated.

To all you people saying jets are slow ways to earn XP/points: get your ass on the ground and help your team cap flags/win.

I disagree with this part, I have 0 issues disabling a jet in a dogfight within the first pass. Especially so once you unlock the AA missiles... However, they can usually bail out and deny you the kill. I find myself strafing ground targets (nom nom nom jeeps) as it's easier to rack up the kills that way.

It should be more tactical, but there are currently a lot of people playing it point and shoot mode. Hopefully that'll taper off in the future (or as more clan servers get going).

As an aside, I wish the coax machine gun in the tank was still RMB like in BF2 - switching between them is kind of a pain in the ass in the middle of a fight.

The basics to learn when you play a BF game- awareness, lead target, burst fire. When you get the hang of those everything else will follow.

I suggest getting either BF2 or BF2142 and learn there. There's still a good number of populated servers out there (we'll maybe less now with BF3 out).

Just checked the leaderboards. This guy has barely had any sleep, lol.

How do I update punkbuster?

Went to the site and on there the files are super outdated and the actual download doesn't list BF3 at all.

I deleted the original from my installed programs list.

Damnit school I hate you, taking time away from playing battlefield :(.

This weekend must come sooner

I feel the same way about my work, damn 12 hour shifts this week .

I'm glad I finally got my wireless xbox controller working for my PC again, damn blown fuse. Just a temp fix for now, bypassed the fuse, till I can get another one. Now it's time to check out the jets ;).

Is it better to fly with the 360 controller?

In the beta there was an option to have the weapon zoom/sight button toggle rather than hold... I don't see it anymore. Anyone know if they removed this or am I missing it somewhere?

Don't know if this has been answered, but it is in the options under that game, or gameplay tab...whatever it's called. You can select toggle or hold from there for your scope.

I watched my nephew play through the Battlefield 3 co-op campaign. Glenn Morshower's voice acting is SUPERB. He really sets the mood for the game early on.

Has anyone been successful in getting the wireless Xbox controller for the PC working with this game yet? I just want it for flying, damn it.

Finally figured out my mouse issues and spent a few hours with the game last night. Apparently if you have a very high DPI gaming mouse (like a 3500dpi Deathadder etc.) and you compensate in-game by turning the sensitivity way down, for some reason BF3 puts in a cap on your turn speed as your sensitivity gets lower so by the time you get a good, normal sensitivity you turn like you were playing on an Xbox gamepad. I just toggled my DPI back down to 800 and brought my sensitivity in-game back up and all was well.

Anyway, this game redefines the word epic. It really does. Flying jets on Caspian Border was huuuuge fun. Did that the whole round and the team lost, but damn it was worth it. :p Love that the maps are big enough that you don't have to turn constantly (you can't fly level and straight for too long, but at least you're not in a constant bank)

Forget the name of the map but the one that is like too bases connected by a tunnel system - I was able to fly the Little Bird / scout helicopter for the RU side INTO the tunnels and take out infantry and light vehicles, LMAO! Must have looked awesome to people in there on foot.

There's honestly nothing like infantry. Sure its fun to zip around on the jet or heli, but darting through hallways and setting up a kill is very satisfying. Though some of the stuff people have done with vehicles never cease to amaze.

It's more tactical than COD or Counter-strike... but I wouldn't say you NEED to work as a team or there's a huge tactical hurdle. You can do your own thing in these public servers just fine.

The game BF3 plays like the most is honestly BFBC2... I feel like it's a revamped BC2 mostly. Other than basic point and shoot skills, you'll pick up the 'tactics' by just playing the game. I wouldn't worry about how well you do or anything like that... just jump in and have fun.

So the bottom line is that Hyper threading screws up game performance?
My hyperthreading is on and I'm playing very smoothly in eyefinity.

Well I fucking suck. :( I used to be great in BF2 and BC2 but in this game I'm total shit. I routinely go like 3 Kills and 12 Deaths a round. I have no scopes on any weapons yet. The enemies always seem to kill me even when I get the first shots in. Maybe I should turn my settings down from Ultra a bit or something? But I'm always above 30 FPS. It's not fun spawning and dying all the time.

Game is fun . Im doing alot of yelling in ventrilo cuz of tank fights, plane'/heli crashing near me cuz of bad flyers , intense fire fight/ revive. Yep going to lose my voice soon.
