Battlefield 2, a return visit.

So recently as many other people are experiencing, my paychecks have been getting pathetically small, barely able to make all the bills on time.

As my finances have essentially forced me into hermitude, I knew that gaming on my PC was going to increase dramatically. cant go out and get drunk with the crew if your flat broke right?

Anyway I lost my original copy of BF2 and decided that for $10 at best buy, it would be a great opportunity for me to get my chops back up. With Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 1943 looming and Battlefield 3 on the distant horizon, my Call of Duty skills wouldnt cut the mustard when you have an A-10 slingin 500 pounders down my M1A2'a barrel!

So, why a post about a 4 year old game? Well, honestly, I had forgotten how much FUN Battlefield 2 is! "Yes but, we already know that!" you say.... true. However I really didnt remember BF2 being as FUN then as it is now. When COD4 was released, it was all I played for like a year. Then I moved, then moved back to Cali and ended up at my dads place. Was out of broadband internet for a good 10 months. (Dont even get me going on that.......depressing is all I can say).

When I finally got a broadband connection I instantly fired up COD4 and once again got back into the swing of things... but I started to get really bored. Sure there are a hell of alot of great firefights that ensued.... but I felt a yearning for more than just a run and gun experience. Then I remembered BF2.....

The last week and a half Ive been getting owned by jets, shot out of the sky by Tunguskas, base raped by an armored battlion and more.... and ya know what? Im loving every minute of it! My skills are steadily improving again and although I had to start over (new CD key with old login really didnt sit too well with the BF2 master account servers I guess) but its like its a brand new game for me.

And while my 8800 GTX is getting to be over 2 years old now, its MOOOREEE than enough to max up all the settings at my native res and the game looks simply fantastic. Its showing its age for sure, but at the end of the day, its looks hella sick, plays better than I remember and ya know what? For ten bucks this is the best fun Ive had since COD4 was new!

Any of you guys still play this? If so what servers do you like?
 
I still love this game too. I have played crysis, Wolfenstein and COD 4 but didn't like them as much. I have not played the MW2. This is my all time favorite shooter
I like the huge maps, being able to play just infantry or go jump in a vehicle. What I really want is BF2 with destructible environments.

Like the SF (Sovereign Forces) servers, Texas Team Players also, some others I can't think of.

My Favorite (MP) shooter. Next one needs more details, destructible environments, when something blows up, lets see the dam trees move with the concussive blast, leaves blow off, or gone completely, buildings turned to rubble, craters in the ground, circular dust waves moving out from blasts and explosions. Instead of launching 50 ft in the air when a shell drops on your head, (Yea I know, not an intentional effect in BF2) how about a bit a red mist and a few gibs mixed in with the dust cloud and debris.

Yea, I hope they do it right for BF3 and don't screw the PC gamers like some others have lately.
 
i'm with ya OP, i recently got back into it again and i forgot just how much damn fun BF2 is! i pretty much only play on IO servers and it's a really nice change of pace from COD run and gun style gameplay. i love joining a squad and using tactical teamwork to advance through the map taking points. GREAT FUN.
 
I will install it and play with you guys if someone has a fix for that annoying mouse skip problem. I remember reading it was something about not supporting direct input and the hidden cursor hitting the edge of the screen. anyone have an idea?
 
I installed it the other day but my G13 keypad doesn't work in the game for some reason, so I couldn't move or do anything.
 
This may sound dumb, but did you try to bind keys to it in the control section?

@shiznit: never heard of that problem, what happens when it occurs?
 
I installed it about a week ago and it wouldn't start up, screen just kept blinking black and nothing would come up.

Zepher,

try going into the controls options menu and pushing the reset to defaults button (or whatever its called). I had that happen once with a keyboard, i checked the controls section and everything looked normal. I clicked defaults, and keyboard started working again.

I'll give that a try.
Funny thing is is that my G15 and my old Nostromo N52 work fine in BF2, just the G13 is non-responsive.
 
Excellent game. I played that game until cod4 hit the shelves. Have you tried cod5? A lot better than cod4 multiplayer IMO. Bigger maps....and you get to kill nazis. I'm sure you can pick one up used for $20. I did. BF2 graphics are a bit out dated, but are still nice.
 
I've got bf2 running on 64 bit Win7 no problems :). Great game though. Anybody got any good mods to recommend for it?
 
BF2 is great fun, recently a group of friends from high school and I started playing again to get back in touch.

5 man squadding around and helicopter runs is never tiring.
 
I went back to 2142 after about a 2 year leave. Man it was a great time doing a c4 buggy while screaming "Ali Akbar."
 
Still my favorite MP game. Since the 1.5 patch was released I have noticed a lot of players I used to play against are back. The attraction for me is that just about the only people left playing a game this old are the ones that want to do it right. Let the glitchers and cheaters have the new releases, I'll be playing Battlefield as long as there are servers to play on.
 
Did they kill the dolphin diving crap for good? Might just have to install again..
 
Patch 1.5 lit the spark for me...still love'n this game! No problems on Win 7 64bit.
 
I love that the new patch includes all the expansions that they had released in the past. Everyone has access to all of the weapons now.

The patch was 1.5 gigs too!

I should of downloaded it before I went to school tonight....bah wanted to play when I got off.../sigh
 
No go for me over here, Win 7 64 bit, Bf2 logo comes up, black screen back to the desktop. =/
 
I'm running on Win 7 64 bit, works flawless. The punk buster installation almost made me punch my monitor.
 
Hm I finally purchased it through Steam, and Im having major trouble getting it to work. The instant I press the "join" button in a multiplayer match, the game closes to windows without any message. Tomorrow Im gonna try a reinstall of windows and fiddling around with punkbuster :S

That happened to me the first time I ran it after I installed it.
this is the order I did,
Install BF2
Install Special Forces (does an auto patch to 1.xx)
Install 1.5 patch

Boot the game, black screen then to desktop with no error.
Tried booting up a few times and then decided to go ahead and load the 1.4x patch that I had.
Ran the patch, restarted the game and the logos and all came up and the game booted up.
I was still running the 1.5 patch, according the numbers on the bottom or top of the screen.

I loaded up a map and my guy wouldn't move, I could aim him with the mouse but no movement with the G13 controller. Keyboard and N52 work, just not the G13. :(
I haven't had a chance to play with the settings since.
 
Sorry to hear about all the trouble. Maybe theres a thing about this in the readme for the patch. Ill check it out.

Anyway OP, don't forget to go to evenbalance.com to download the punkbuster manual update client if you have trouble with being kicked out of games. The in-game client has never worked for me after a fresh installation.
 
I am having a problem with Punkbuster for the first time. Everytime I connect to a server I get kicked with a punkbuster b failed to initiate error. Did the manual Punkbuster update and still have the problem. Anyone?

I had the same problem on farcry 2. I went and downloaded the pb program that lets you update all of your games instead of a single client. After I did this, I had no problem with it.

it's a cd install, not on steam.
Any idea?

I didn't had any patch installed, maybe that's why... I downloaded them yesterday hopefully that will fix it.

And yeah, BF2 kicks major ass
 
I still love this game also. It has stood the test of time. After reading this thread I am going to have to get back into it again. Plus BF2142.
 
I like BF2, but it's not as addictive for me as BF1942. I still play it at least once a week.
 
BF2 has to be updated to the last 1.4 patch before 1.5

Did you still have files from the original install on your system? There was a glitch where if you have favorites listed in the .cfg file it would wait to time out each of those before continuing, causing it to hang where you describe. If you do have old files, strip the favorites from the .cfg files.

Nah it was a while ago, had 2-3 fresh install since then.
I'll see if it works with the updates tonight, hopefully it's not a Win7 X64 problem :)
