I am looking into picking up a Barton 2500+ or a Mobile 2500+ Barton, to go on my A7N8X Dlx. I need more speed and if I can get a 2500 for $80 and OC it to the speed of a 2800 or 3200 for half the price I say why not.

Anyway, what do I need to do to my mb to get it to accept the new chip? It is revision 1.4 I think, I know its not a 2.0. I am assuming a BIOS flash, but which BIOS is the best for stability and what not while overclocking?

You might need a bios flash to get it to recongnize it. THough I would expect too much overclocking if you dont have a 2.0 board. Some of the earlier ones will get up there...some will not.

agreed

the board is going to hold you back pretty badly. 2800+ is possible, but 3200+ probabily isnt.

So tell me this.

Which would be smarter?
Buy the 2500 and 'try' to OC
Buy the 2800 and maybe OC, but more than likely not

Or other options?

probabily mobile 2500+, and run it at 12.5x166 or as high as the multi can go. the big problems with rev <2.0 is that the FSB wasnt rated for 200 mhz.

Ok checking ASUS' site shows that the 1.4 & 1.6 are capable of the 400MHz FSB with a BIOS flash.

yeah thats what they told me too  . None of my >2.0 boards would not go above 170fsb.

Even with a new NB HSF?

I was told when i tried to OC in the beggining that I needed to replace the crappy NB hs.

I find that hard to believe. Even if that was true. They show that you only need a bios update which i know not allways works. I think you have a 50/50 chance of this working.

i have a 1.4 with bios 1.6 or whatever and im sitting at 11x200 at stock voltages.

yup...same setting i run mine at. Im not saying that he wont be able to get to those speeds. Just in my experiance its hit or miss.

If your current CPU is unlocked, try dropping the multiplier and raising the FSB up as high as you can go to see what it can do.

I'm not sure the exact revision of the board I have is, but I know it's a 1.0x board and I'm running 208 FSB stably right now with stock NB cooling. More than likely I just got a good board, and I'm not complaining.
