Lately (last few months) i have been RMA'ing everything, only piece of original equipment left is CPU,case and DVD drive.

Now my computer only runs XP when HT is DISABLED.

Could this be a failing CPU? System has been running since August.

Overclocked?

if so, at what voltage? (prob above 1.65v Im guessing?)

it hasn't been above 1.7. plus temps have never gone near/above 60C. well within Intel's specs.

Asus p4p800 and p4c800 have voltage stability problems. You killed your cpu dude.

Or

Have you tried running the system while not in a case?

i ran the mobo(and everything else) out of the case just for kicks, worked. put it back in, works. turn case up on its bottom(was on its side when initially back in) it reboots when booting, WTF?!

Yay for electrical problems!
The motherboard is not properly affixed to the case to get proper ground, or there's something shorting it out.
When it's on it's side, it's laying on the metal, so uh yeah, kinda obvious why it gets ground there, hehe.
Try removing any add on cards if you have any.
Otherwise, remount with a gold thingy behind every hole and a screw in every hole. I always take the time to fill them all up that I can :)

I know exactly what that is. Your mobo is grounding out on your case check your mobo stands (dont know the right name the part where the screws go) make sure all of them match with the holes the one that isnt is the one grounding it out

lol nice. at least you gave them a more proper name - "mobo stands" as opposed to my "gold thingys" ;)

its not that, i am positive its not. all 11 screws that hold the mobo to the mobo stands are secure.

edit: and if it was a grounding issue, then how come when i enable HT for an OS that supports HT, i cannot boot into it?

how long was it at 1.7v? (a few months I assume)

it may be SNDS...and your CPU might be on its way out....

Have you tried it at default speeds and default vcore? (with HT enabled)

Another thing. Some motherboards require a BIOS update to get the HT to work properly. Disable HT and try that. Then re-enable.

it was at 1.7 once when i was trying to get it past 3.0 ghz, maybe for 30 mintues, an hour at the most. rest of the time its at the stock voltage.

its the latest bios, i've tried every bios back to the last 6 moths(all of which worked before my problem).

same problem...

change all hardware (not cpu) , but HT won´t work. the system freeze or random reboots...

the cpu never get more than 1.6 volts...
it sucks....

got my new CPU in, Intel said it was possibly a bad batch, what are the number's on ur' CPU, i ordered mine from newegg end july/beginning aug.

new CPU box is dated 3/22/04

but stock voltage on the new one is 1.654(CPUZ, 1.600 in mobo)?? intel said this is the case with some processors?? that seem kinda high....

Do you have an USB Cable modem or anything that is known to cause issues with SMP?

I had the same problem with a USB Cable Modem, when I plugged into ethernet the probs went away.

it runs a few *C cooler than the bad CPU from the start, guessing it was bad fromthe start.

the new heatsink+fan were totally different than the bad CPU i sent them, maybe thats what keeps it cooler.

My P4P800 killed my original 3.0C. Never had *serious* voltage fluctuations with my 2.4b cpu, highest the voltage ever drifted was 1.712v. However, I installed the 3.0C and voltages were all over the place. Bios was set to 1.52v, and 90% of the time, the cpu was being fed 1.65...and I saw it drift into the 1.75-1.85v range once. I came home from work one day and it was a steady 1.91v....and ever since it's been flaky as hell even at sub-stock speeds.

RMA'd the P4P800 and the CPU. I'm ordering an Abit board on Friday also...just in case I like it better than the Asus...and they're known to have more stable voltages than the Asus boards lately.
