long story short my mom was out of state for around 3 mos. came back and the computer wasn't working. maybe because of the heat/cold fluctuations. ie sun/no sun heat turning on and off. we chatted with an HP rep about it and it wasn't under warranty. we were told it was a motherboard problem and to send it back in it would be around 2-$250. we didn't.
we called a computer repair person (a young kid). told us problem was with the power supply. anyway it took more than a month to get it back. finally got it back today. told us it was a motherboard problem and he f'ed up before. he did install a new power supply however. we chatted with hp again and this time the rep just told us to fix it ourselves and we were again told we are not under warranty.

it's pretty tough to find the mboard online or a new one at least.

here's the mboard:

Manufacturer: Asus

*
HP/Compaq motherboard name: Leonite-GL8E

anyway any suggestions?
do not want to install the mboard ourselves.

well what I mean is what's a good place to buy this motherboard? How do I find a good computer shop around to put it in?

You don't need that exact mobo. Just buy a cheap compatible socket 775 mATX (something based on the G31 or 945G chipsets) motherboard and replace it yourself or have another computer technician do it. Do note that you will have to reinstall the OS as you are using a new motherboard. As for the computer shop, you're gonna have to look around in your area.

I suggest you just get a new motherboard from ebay. Here is a link to the motherboard that you have.

If you do not go with a HP motherboard, you will have to get a new copy of windows as the HP key will not work on a non hp motherboard.

It is pretty straight forward to channge the motherboard. Just take your time and if need be take pics so you can put everything back the same.
Hope this helps.
