Bad IDE cable?

I just put in a new IDE cable recently.

Last night my computer started to randomly act up, it would freeze ever 4seconds for 1 second, moving the mouse was horrible, my music was skipping.

I was able to recreate this when I opened my cd-rom and closed it again. I also noticed the activity light on the cd-rom flashing a little after I closed it even though there is no cd in it.

Is this due to the ide cable?
 
Could be, did you put in a IDE 80pin cable, and did you plug them into the right places. Master end plug, slave the middle plug???
 
Pretty certain they are plugged into the correct places. I am not using cable select though and have never previously had problems in the way I have plugged my ide devices in.

They are plugged in the same way that the other cable is.

Also pretty certain it is 80pin, the cable I bought is a new rounded one.
 
Try specifying master/slave settings on the device jumpers to make sure it's not the cable select that is messing you up.
 
wats teh difference between 40 and 80 pinsl just wondering. does it make ur computer faster? cuz i just bought 40 pin recently and my freind laguhed at me. it was those rounded cables too. :(
 
I believe 80 pin allows speeds of 100 and 133, where as 40 will not.
 
I doubt they would sell 40 rounded cables. Rounded cables just were not really manufactured until everything was already ATA100, so it *should* have been an 80 pin cable. That doesn't prevent a jackass from producing a 40 rounded cable, it just makes it an odd cable.

To the poster, why did you change the cables in the first place? It's possible that the change is causing the issue, so swap them back and let us know.
 
Well, I didn't say you had an 80 pin cable, just that it would be an odd one. Also, see that 80 conductors in your link, and the ATA66/100/133 ref. Your OK, you have what we are reffering to as an 80 pin cable.

The spec only uses 40 pins, IIRC, so it's still called a 40 pin cable, but count them (ok your's in rounded, so it's harder), there are 80. The extra 40 are for cross talk or some other interference issue. It's been a while since I read why, so I may be talking out of my ass a little. :)

At any rate, why did your friend laugh at rounded cables? Nothing wrong with them, they look cleaner, and increase airflow (vs. poor cable management).
 
Pretty certain mine is 80pin, I did switch the cables just before I left home, I will see what happens tonight and post back.
 
Make sure the cables are plugged in all the way. A loose connection can cause a lot of trouble. Also, doublecheck to make sure the power connectors are all a tight fit. You may have accidentally loosened one up while putting in the new cable.
 
Yup had already checked all that stuff. Will see what happens tonight if all fine will try the other cable again.
