Got a random hard lock. Rebooted and after everything loads in XP I can move the mouse but no start menu or loading of any programs. Booted into my dual booted W7 and ran a chkdsk on that partition and the box once again started acting funny. Googled unresponsiverness and got a bad hard drive or a bad cable. Changed the cable and seemed fine for about a hour. Now same issues. Is my 3 month old WD Black going bad or!?

Download the CD image of Hitachi Drive Fitness Test, burn the ISO file to a CD, and then boot from it, just like you would do with the XP/Vista install CD. Test the hard drive and see if any problems are found. DFT will run on most manufacturers' hard drives. Alternatively, you can use Seagate's SeaTools for DOS to test a Seagate or Maxtor drive. For a Western Digital drive, you could use Data Lifeguard Tools for DOS to test a Western Digital drive.

Got 8 passes of memtest to run no issues. Ran Data Lifeguard Extended on the primary drive no errors. Running it on my 2nd and 3rd now. Strangly now if it boots in and say I open up uTorrent the mouse and video feed back is gone but I still see the hard drive light going with uTorrent loading! Bad video card maybe!?

Installed a buddy's video card and same issue. Did some more poking around on the internet and Logitech and Gigabyte came up together a few times. I figured ehh what the heck! Changed ports. Same issue. Updated software. Same issue. BUT it seems when it freezes and I pull the mouse plug out and put it back in about 20 seconds later it unfreezes! WTF!? Soo it seems I will be ordering a new mouse tonight in hopes that it'll be a permenent fix! I don't mind unplugging it once and replugging but it might freeze again later we shall see!

wtfeezy... i feel its an XP issue. it only happens in XP, right? lol

Yes only in XP. More info since my earlier post. Only works for a bit. Eventually only a reboot will fix it again. Odd enough when I watch task manager I see services.exe peg @ 25% (one core) and that's exactly when the machine locks up! Ran Avast, Windows Defender, Malwarebytes and Superantispyware and found nothing! I did just that day install Mirrors Edge and Prototype. Uninstalled Mirrors Edge and only have Prototype installed now but from searches only Mirrors Edge had a rootkit installer so I'm stumped! Using my Windows 7 install that I haven't switched to yet but I guess I'm forced to use it now! :p

Hm... try uninstalling and re-installing your USB drivers. In Device Mgr, remove the USB Root hubs, and upon reboot, XP should reinstall the drivers. If the problem persists, see if you can download the drivers. If not, you can repair XP. Create an ISO of your XP disc + SP3 slipstreamed (nLite) along with other critical updates and simply proceed as if you were installing XP. When it comes time to choose the partition, select the current partition with XP; setup should detect your installation and offer you a repair option (hit "R" to repair). If not, then something went wrong. :p
