Well I finally got around to overclocking my POS e4500 since I got some quality ram in. However, the highest so far I get push it (paired with an AC freezer 7 pro) stable is ~2.8ghz on stock volts. If I push it any higher, even at 1.5v (yes, 1.5) it won't even get past 3.0ghz.

I have upped the volts for the north and southbridge on my DFI Infinity P-965-S, so Im fairly sure thats not the problem.

The weird thing is that there is almost like a physical barrier for this chip to get past 3.0. I can get it to boot into vista at 2.9 and stock volts, but isn't stable. If I up the voltage, it becomes stable at 2.9. If I try to push it to 3.0ghz at up the voltage all the way to 1.5 (I dont want to go any higher than 1.5), it won't even boot vista.

So I either got unlucky and got a bad M0 stepping e4500, or I need a better overclocking motherboard (Im going to buy a new one anyways so I can go SLI, so if anyone has any reccomendations, lemme know)

Any thoughts?
 
overclocking isnt an exact science due to the variables involved.

What do you have for a motherboard, That could have a very big part on your overall overclock,

What do you have for 'Good" ram?

What kind of PSU do you have?

what are your temps?
 
When Intel is making 45nm chips, the best get put into Xeon or E8500 boxes. The less capable chips get shoved into lower numbered boxes. When there is defects in the on chip cache memory, part of this gets disabled and they become lower end chips. That's how the manufacturing process works.

There is nothing too unusual about hitting the wall at 3 GHz with your E4500. Some users might get lucky but the golden chips are a lot harder to find in the lower end of the market.

~30C idle, ~55-60C load with an AC freezer 7 pro

I think Im just gonna save my money and invest in a nice e8500
 
Don't bother with the E8500. Big waste of money IMO since it's $80 more than the E8400 yet all you get that for that extra $70 is a .5 multiplier.

As for a SLI mobo, do you a 24" monitor or play at 1920x1200? If not, don't bother with SLI. SLI is only cost effective once you start playing at 1920x1200.

Also, are you keeping a 1:1 ratio with the RAM and FSB? Meaning that your RAM is running at DDR2-533 speeds if your FSB is 266Mhz. And is your MCH/NB cooled well? Stick a small fan on it.

nope, 1600x1200 monitor right now. But I already have a 9600gt and would like another instead of having to fork up $300+ for a 8800gtx that is worse than sli'ed 9600gt's

As for my ram, no, because I just got it and haven't tested its limits yet.

And I think I got it anyways because... the NB strap was set to "auto", so I switched it over to 266 and Im currently at 3.2ghz :)

And my NB does have a 40mm fan on it for cooling.
 
Or, you could buy one of the newer cards, like HD4850 for $200 and sell your 9600GT for $75. That'll theoretically give you better performance than SLI'd 9600GTs for only $125 -- which would save you from having to buy yet another motherboard (an nvidia one, too, which are known to be not as reliable/stable as intel chipset boards).

Keep the RAM at a 1:1 ratio, so make the DRAM multiplier 2x.
 
I would but then my DDR2-800 ram would be running at ~DDR2-540 speeds since my motherboard is a piece of crap and the FSB is soooooo unstable at anything higher than 300 and my awesome (sarcasm) e4500 won't got past 3ghz without major voltage.

Right now, my cpu is stable at 2.97ghz @ 1.392v and my ram is running at 405. The overall FSB is 270, blah.

Once I have the money (and see ati's new lineup of video cards so I can decide on crossfire or SLI), Ill buy an e8400 and new mobo.


Dammit DFI, what happened to you? :p
 
I have an E4500 also. I have the same problem you have. My chip never goes above 40C so I know it isn't heat. No matter how much juice I give it, it does not want to get past 3080. I have dropped the multiplier and tried that, but no success. I think these chips are just not able to handle over 3ghz. Like another guy said, some people may have gotten lucky.
 
Yep, it's really hit or miss with e4500's looking at newegg reviews on it as well (some say 3.5+ghz, others say barely 3.0).

Oh well, time for upgrades :)
