Today I had a problem booting my computer with an older ASUS motherboard because the CPU was too hot. While cleaning all the dust out of the cpu heat sink and fan I noticed that 3 or 4 caps on the motherboard are leaking. The machine is working fine now. Voltages in the bootup screen look good. I'm just wondering how long it will last before it dies completely. What are the symptoms I should expect when it starts to fail?

Without knowing the circuit they are in there is no way of telling that. It might run forever with no issue, but the odds are slim.
