So I was removing the HSF from my CPU and the CPU came up attached to the HSF...ripped out of it's socket. Will it be OK? I can't test it right now and I have to know if I'm jacked...
 
if the processor is LGA it should be OK. But if have a PGA processor and it got yanked out of its socket, then you must have given it quite a lot of pressure.

It was a PGA.....the funny thing is I hardly put any pressure on it at all. I gave it a slight tug and it didn't come. I pulled fractionally harder and the whole thing came out, CPU attached to the bottom of the HSF. Happened twice (I was swapping 2 CPUs). System one (ABIT IC7) booted up fine (this one came out the hardest). Sytem two (Intel D875PBZ) isn't booting (this one took almost no pressure and the whole thing came out). Suggestions?
 
That has happened to me soooo many times, never had any bent pins. As long as you didn't bend any pins in the removal process you are fine.

I doubt it...I have also had it happen to me many times........That thermal paste gets like friggen glue after a while :)
 
Done it on both abit boards of mine, all the time. No problems, after several times. Try running your processor at full load for about 10 minutes before you go to remove it... found it helps a little.

I saw a Socket yanked off the motherboard. I used Artic Silver 5 and mine did the same thing. I didn't loose or break any pins. That 2.6C is running just fine.

nah this happens all the time, that thermal adhesive forms a very nice airtight seal between 2 flat surfaces. usually best to wiggle back and forth if possible, but yeah it doesnt take a lot of force to just pull the whole assembly out without unlocking the ZIF. thing to remember though, is that youre pulling all the pins at once, and distributing the force, not just one pin.
 
I too have ad this happen many times. As long as none of the pins were torn off then it should be fine.

Dude, I used the AS5 TIM Grease and NOT adhesive LOL! I know because I have both kinds. The second time, I gently twisted it from side to side to break the cooked on sill. Zero problems. If it is not done this way, many times it is tight enough to yank the whole Processor out of its socket.

With that said, if you can break the grip of their adhesive, you're good! I used the AS Compound Adhesive for my Zalman Chipset cooler.

I did this twice to my 2.4C and once to my Celeron 320. They work fine...

Just make sure none of the pins are bent/missing.

it was my bad - as i don't really use adhesive i tend to use them interchangeably. anyhoo /me is clueless in this thread it seems ;)
 
This happens when the thermal paste has been on for too long, or too much was used. The Socket 478 CPU's pins are far too short, and there is not enough surface to get a solid hold on the pins in the socket. This is one of many reasons for LGA775's design.

Have you seperated the heatsink from CPU yet?
 
On my A64 3500+ the AS5 really seemed to stick when I went to take off the XP90 heatsink. I went to take the heatsink off and it pulled the processor too, I was scared as all get out but it works fine. I'm guessing it probably happed because I used too much AS5
 
I turn on my pc for a sec.. work it loose.. then turn the pc off and pull the heatsink.
 
magnetik, that sounds like the heat would make the AS5 have less viscosity so it would come off easier, sounds logical.
 
I attempt to wiggle the heatsink back and fourth, while applying a twisting motion. This seems to help "break" the seal. It usually prevents me from pulling the CPU out with the heatsink, but no 100% of the time.
