Aw crap. This can't be normal.

Playin CS:S and all of a sudden it freezes. Then everything turns a mixed color of yellow and blue. Then freezes again and does this:

Anyone got anything near an explanation? My last MSI 8500GT done this before it croaked and wouldn't do 3D anymore.

lol... that's strange.
Have you done the usual stuff of installing recent drivers, checking for dust, etc?
Does this happen in other games?

Last reformat was a month or two ago, so I should have the latest video drivers (unless new ones have been released).

Dust isn't a problem for my comp (amazingly), the basement seems to be rather dust free for the most part).

I'm not sure if it happens in other games, CS:S is really all I play anymore, I know it's never happened in Red Orchestra or CoH.

Noticed something new. If I open anything 3d (game/nvidia control panel) my comp will hang for a few seconds... yet my sound (music) keeps going.... kind of a WTF? to me.

I should add. I'm in no hurry to fix this. It's gettin replaced in a week or two by a shuttle rig (I LOVE small comps) anyway.

Are you asking what kind it is?

Or are you suggesting that that is the prob?

Well, I can very well consider it now that I think about it but, I can't see my rig drawing that much power or anything. Though, I've problems with the PSU before. Sometimes with more than 1 hard drive it would never fully power on. You could hear a squealing noise coming from it when it would do it, then it would shut off completely. Since I almost never run more than one hard drive I disregarded it.

Wonder if it's coming back to bite me in the ass?

asking both actually cause if you have 2 cards same problem, that's the FIRST place I would look

Does your card even have a fan? I know a lot of the 8500s were sold as "silent". I would get some more airflow going to the card or even stick a fan right on the card.

330 watt is perfectly fine for an 8500. especially since that seasonic is a decent power supply.

It sounds to me like a heat problem.

You guys have really got to learn how to use a system without reformatting. I haven't reformatted my drive in probably three years. A format is not the fix all. I have even changed processors without a format. It doesn't work every time, but most of the time it is possible to change MB and processors without a reformat. Google it and you'll see.

Now, down to the actual problem.
Drivers.
If you have been going along fine for a while with the same drivers then your probably ok. If they are new, they could be the culprit. If you need to reinstall them, do it the right way. That means uninstalling from the control panel and then booting into safe mode as ADMIN and then running you preferred driver cleaner.
Heat.
It's summer time. The card is overheated. It may be permanently damaged or it may not be. I would make sure it's clean and reapply thermal paste. If that doesn't fix it, try under-clocking it and see if you can get it stable.
Bad silicon.
I had a bumper 7900gt that the memory went bad after 6 months. There was nothing I could do to make it work right and it never overheated. It was water cooled from day one. It exhibited similar issues.
Power.
Again, if you have been going on just fine for a while this is doubtful, but I wouldn't overlook it.

hmm is it always like that? I had a similar case before, it happened when I alt tabbed too many times. But restarting the game always worked for me.

Thats really wild, I've been playing CS:S (and 1.6 before that) for many years and never seen that. Only the purple floor glitch when ALT-TABing.

I reformat atleast once every couple months. It doesn't bother me at all.

I may very well have killed it with heat. I had the HSF off my old MSI card (a single slot cooler) on it and it was hitting 60's in game and I noticed a bit of glitching.

As for ambient? My room is in the basement so it doesn't get very warm down here at all.
