Audio Distortion Problem

Okay here is the problem before I go into how it started. Every bit of audio that gets played is heavily distorted and has a really high pitched filter/hiss type noise attached to it.

Now it first occured when I was playing EVE Online. This game isn't that intensive whatsoever but every once in awhile it would make every bit of audio that played go in slow motion.....slowing it down like 300%. If I went into the control panel in the game and turned the audio off and back on it went away though.

Now today I just bought Oblivion and Fear. Whenever I'm playing these games the initial problem I was talking about happens. I don't know if the two problems are related or not but I'm confused.

A Sound Clip of what the problem sounds like is now on my myspace page...

I have a 2.66ghz P4 with onboard audio, a 7600GS, and 1.5gb pc 3200. I'm not getting any framerate slowdown whatsoever in the games I'm playing.

Ideas anyone?

Yeah, a volume control somewhere is too high.
The fact you are hearing hiss makes me think its an internal gain setting that you dont have access to that has somehow got a wrong value in it.
Uninstall, reboot and reinstall the drivers. This will reset the gain settings.

Alternatively, your 'mic in' may have been switched on and has the +20dB box ticked.
I doubt its this though as it doesnt explain the distortion.

Yeah it has something to do with gaming....when I exit the game the audio goes back to normal. Its doing it with 3 games now though so it isn't an individual case.

aagghhhh while Uninstalling the SoundMax Driver I reinstalled the driver but now I lost my control over the volume  Where the hell is the thing I'm looking for to install the audio stuff?

Normally on the CD.
You can download them from the web too.

If you mean to un-install the drivers, do it from Add Remove Programs.

Oh nevermind....I just had to restart before I tried reinstalling the driver heh...

But yeah I know it isn't the mic in because I do a lot of recording and the Line In is always the slot thats left chosen. I've got an audio sample of the Wave Out I recorded that I'll stick up on my Myspace Music page to let you guys know what I'm talking about....
