need a straight atx psu right?

tryin to get a new psu for my socket a system but future proof it for a 939 sli build

As long as it includes, or you get, a 24pin to 20pin adapter, it will work fine.

isn't there something about +or- 5v rail cpu vs. newer 12v cpu etc...

i guess as long as it's comes with 20+4 pin it's suitable for 20pin usage / socket a

You will need a PSU that has relatively high amperage ratings for both the +5V and the +12V rails if you're going to use the same PSU for both your current and your new setups. Unfortunately, that means buying a PSU with far greater wattage than what you'd normally need for either rig.

yea .. my buget is a little light too

think i might just stay with a single card setup for my next rig

newegg has a thermaltake TR2 430 20+4 w/ pci-e for 29.99

everybody raves about it

i think it's the one.

Actually, that PSU is way overrated by the 'Egg reviewers. The truth is, its build quality is really crappy to begin with. And it has a +12V capacity of only 18A on its single +12V rail - nowhere near enough for a newer A64 system, even with a single high-end graphics card. (Heck, that PSU could have been a rebadged Deer or Powmax unit, for all I know.)

The truth is, to get a PSU which can handle an A64 rig with even a single high-end graphics card requires spending at least $70.

what are your recommendations

If your budget is about $50, you can't go wrong with any of the FSP Group 400W or higher units for a high-end A64 with a single high-end graphics card. Above the $50 range, Antec distributes good units - but choose carefully.

yea the fortrons are KNOWN to be good

how about this one

modular is nice me thinks

man this is tuff.. i read in the recommended sticky that DFI N4 boards like 24pin main connectors and at least 480watts

so what i'm looking for is a psu that has:

reputable name company
at least 480 watts - preferrably with 34a on the 12v rail
a native 24pin connector - preferrabley comes witih 24pin -> 20pin adapter
is modular
has a quiet 120mm fan
and cost no more than 100 dollars - preferrably 80 or so

edit: ok so these specs are out the window - lookin at either the tagan 480 or powerstream 520 now

about the only choice under that price range is the sunbeam. i'd check out the enermax liberty 500w which is about 120.

Sorry it took so long to answer all of those questions in this thread.

You see, there is no way to get a PSU for your current motherboard which will be "future-proof" for a new system - at least not without having to spend a relatively insane amount of money. Your current motherboard has no 4-pin ATX12V connector at all. This means that dual-rail PSU's are not recommended for your current motherboard due to both cross-loading issues and the fact that such older systems cannot use the +12V2 rail - and the cheaper single-rail PSU's that are still on the market all tend to have +12V rails that are too weak for current systems.

Thus, my only two recommended PSU's which can be used on both your current system and a newer system are the OCZ Powerstream 520W (which costs more than $100) and the PCP&C 510W (over $200).

AMS 400W

I run 3 AMS brand PSU's. and they are rock solid and whisper quiet, even under load.

They aren't much to look at, but who will be checking out your power supply?

You'll just need an adapter for your 24-pin motherboard later on, or just buy a new one since this one is cheap.

I've got a noisetaker 420 that is combined 32a on it's two rails, 24-pin, and i'd be willing to let it go for cheap. PM me if you're interested.
