Atomic Heart

I've put off playing this due to real life stuff, but this DLC is ridiculous and stupid and i'm here for it.

Finally bought the game a year after playing the demo. Thought the price point of 30 bucks was fair enough. Unique enough game play, runs very well on my ol' rig. But man, i fogot how bad the voice acting is on your character. I don't get it, because the surrounding cast is pretty good.

But other than that, still early in the game, but i'm liking so far. Echoing what others have stated that it's got a Bioshock feel to it.

Quick update on the game (still no RT :))

I've played some hard games in my time, but is it just me here? This game has gotten extremely hard to the point of it's really not that fun anymore. On YT looking for tips on this boss that looks straight out of the Incredibles. I understand how to beat it, but can't get by it.

Lowering difficulting ain't helping. Maybe getting too old for these games .....

I played on normal most likely. I had zero issues with difficultly. I don't recall getting stuck on any boss either. Maybe updates changed it though.

More of a learning curve on actually how to play the games with the weapons with combination of the special ability (ie polymer jet). After that nightmare which was the first boss (Incredibles boss) I figured out some things. Like maybe swig a vodka before combat. Actually still hard, but playable.

And they want a minimum of 12GB of VRAM for it. Guess I'll have to wait and see in a few days what happens with only 10 on a 3080.

I might have to re-download it just to see what performance is like. I "only" had a 3090 at the time, but the game had major bogdowns in open areas with lots of cameras. Tossing in RT is probably going to make cranking the details a 4080 or bust.

Yeah, they probably thought by 23, ngre nvidia would have released more cards with 12-16 gb ram. Grated there is a 4060 ti 16gb now after the release. So maybe they think we'll at least buy one of those🤷‍♂️

I don't recall it running that great on my 3080 in the first place. Didn't finish it, though. Interesting concept but I got bored.

Atomic Heart– Ray Tracing 4K Benchmarks

Atomic Heart has a lot of reflective surfaces so you will see an improvement...however, it’s not a “transformative” improvement...while the game’s RTX Tech Demo looked impressive in 2019, it no longer does...I mean, it’s been five whole years since then...so, don’t expect anything like Alan Wake 2, Cyberpunk 2077 or most UE5 games that take full advantage of Lumen (like Hellblade 2)...

Half framerate, yikes.

It looks nice in still shots. And probably even better in motion. But, we aren't there yet, on general performance.

The non-RT graphics are still really good.

At least it supports DLSS and framegen. That pulls between 100-110fps, which would be fine by me. I'd see if it passes the eye test and go from there. The reviewers are claiming there are still major traversal stutters. Those were an issue when I was playing back when it first launched. I also had general performance issues in certain areas with boatloads of cameras and flying bots. Things would be fine 90% of the time, but it would become borderline unplayable at times. I'd have to back all the settings down into potato territory.

I didn't notice much, if any stuttering. It is annoying as it locks off areas and prevents backtracking a bit too much but I believe they do that for performance reasons. On my setup it worked quite well. For ray tracing typically frame rates drop by around half. Though this seems to have a bit less ray tracing features than most other modern ray tracing games despite the performance loss but I assume that has to do with shoving it in UE4. DLSS and/or frame gen is typically the only way to get good ray tracing performance anyways.

I never really cared once they said it wouldn’t have it at release. UE4 just isn’t built for it. After playing both Still Wakes the deep and Senua 2 it’s pretty obvious that the hardware raytracing slapped onto older engines is pretty useless. Lumen in UE5 is absolutely incredible with very little performance cost.

I don't really care so much about it as the game looked good long before RT and it seems it becomes a modest improvement at best for a large framerate drop. I'm more interested in seeing the devs come through on the next two expansions in the Season Pass, that expand the story and world ideally. One reason I picked it up was that it seemed that the first expansion (and then the second) were old school, story and lore expanding expansions instead of the typical these days "One big story thing at best, the rest is all costumes and maybe a horde mode or something" . The game is on my backlog, but it seems like the DLC so far are significant expansions that expand the story, with each expansion following up one prospective choice made by the protagonist toward the end of the game which is neat; I'm eager to see the next two and hope they have the same or greater depth and content.

5 years ago when they first showed off the RT demo I thought it was going to be the best looking game of all time...the game has so many reflective surfaces and lighting which should have gotten a major improvement with RT added

DLC 3 is coming.

No title that I can find, says it is coming soon, but that teaser is 3 weeks old. Taking them too long to get this DLC out.

Frankly I'm happy its still in development with its original creators given the Russia situation. The teaser suggests it may be another major story campaign perhaps and if so, that's fantastic. Hope they get sales in Steam Halloween; maybe theyll even release it out of nowhere right before?

I plan to play them all back to back and I do hope they are more story based. Seems like the first one was well received, second one not as much. Those two are apparently 3 hours each. Though by the time DLC 4 is out, the original game would have been out for more than 2 years.

It seems like they're adding more features and side stuff along the way. I know the first DLC was well regarded, an the second one's critique seems to come down to A) is too "weird" or different thematically with the whole sweets and other stuff (some of which are kind of visual puns an references to Russian/Slavic tea service and other memes, according to a Russian speaking friend of mine. You don't NEED to know this to get it, but you' probably enjoy more. I'll have to ask him again when i'm about to play) B) the platforming introduce has "surfing" mechanic that people have to get used to sorted out mechanically. Those that don't will have a bad time, but the whole "look above and glide to gain height and momentum" thing seems to be in effect. I don't blame some for not knowing this as the rest of the game was not a big platforming challenge, but I wouln't rate it down necessarily just for being different if it was not done poorly within that different context - guess I'll see when I play.

if it takes some time for them to get the expansions out, yet they're still included in the Expansion Pass (I have to give them credit for this, not to mention that you can pick it all up on increasing discount during sales like the one going on now for Steam Halloween etc) , I have no problem should they be content heavy and of interest, especially if they're more "story" DLC types as we're hoping. From the teaser for the 3rd DLC, it appears that way but e'll see - last I checked previous DLCs got a teaser and then a release promo video so it may be coming pretty soon with luck. Overall, as much as one can be with it being on one's backlog and having played the demo, I'd lean towards being charitable because its a unique bit of content that seems to come from Russian culture, memes etc..past and present in the samme way that something like the Bioshock series required a perspective aware of different ideologies and how they reflected off US culture, or that how there are a lot of Japanese game that have a very unique perspectives, cultural elements, an memes that allow their development. Atomic Heart coming from a post-WWII Soviet Russian but not quite inspirations to create their own sci-fi altered reality Bioshock-like is something we see relatively rarely in gaming. I hope they get the chance to bring their vision to completion as they intend!

Oh, and the game is on sale for 65-67% off during the Steam Autumn sale. The Gold and Premium editions gets you all 4 DLC included in the price.

ray-tracing is still in beta after 6 months?...sad...this was a title that looked to be an RT showcase when it was first announced

So I started playing this game again (it got removed from GP so I am playing on Steam now as I purchased it). It has major stutters (which didn't exist). I am using DLSS Quality, FG and RTX Quality beta. Is that what is causing stutters? It is fine indoors but pretty bad outdoors. It's not a lot of issue as fps is around 170 at times and sometimes 120-140 (very inconsistent). What are the best settings for this POS game?

I put 13hrs into it back in March and it wasn't that bad stutter wise.
Now that they added RT to it, It's more or less a clusterfuck performance wise I've heard.
Try turning off FG and see what you get. My experience with FG is hit or miss in most games.

Did you finish it?

I had almost zero stutters, I think it is one of the best examples of how to make a modern built UE4 game run without stuttering issues. But that was before they added ray tracing. I would hope that with ray tracing disabled it still runs smoothly..

I wonder if ray tracing will ever leave the Beta phase...maybe by the time the final story DLC is released

How much difference does the raytracing make, really? If it seems to be cumbersome with performance I hope it improves but if its another case of slightly better lighting but needing upscaling, frame generation, and other stuff to make up for it I can't imagine being worthwhile. I know that in the past year or so there have been less gimmicky usage of RT, but some titles enable the feature because of expectations and its a heavy performance penalty none the less.

so there's one more story DLC left?...hopefully by the time it's released ray tracing will also be out of beta (but something tells me it's going to stay in beta)
