Anandtech has ATI's roadmap for the 520.

HTML:
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2501

The R520 is now slated for a mid October launch.

Well that's pretty lame imho... These cards better be freaking incredible at this point. I've been calmly anticipating an ATI response to the features and performance of the geforce 7xxx series and now it appears they've yet again been delayed to the confoundment of all. I was expecting an entire series launch in september, but it appears I've yet again been disappointed by my own naive expectations.

Ahhh...good job ATI. :p A few more slip-ups this year and nVidia will command 75%+ of the discrete graphics market...

too ture - they are almost gone

ATI stated that R520 would be launched in September at our workshop at QuakeCon on Saturday. Who knows....

I just interviewed an R520.

"So....R520, Tell us a little bit about yourself"

"I'll never be available because ATI sucks. I can't be bought because I'm just a rumor and I dont exist. No one is going to want me if I do comeout because everyone else has a 7800. BOOOHOOO." --R520

"I'm sorry to hear that. You should have stuck with NVIDIA. They would have got you out in a timely manner because they care about you. I guess ATI just likes to hurt your feelings R520."

( R520 is :( ) "This is the end of the world for me....I have nothing live for".......................................BANG!!!!! (Fall to ground)

You sicko.

Anyway, lol, I didn't expect they to make 128-bit memory for R500 series, man.

RV530
  • 600MHz Core Clock
  • 1400MHz Memory Clock
  • 512MB Maximum Memory for "XT"
  • 256MB Maximum Memory for "Pro"
  • 128-bit Memory
  • 12 Pipelines
Maximum 16x32MB 1.4ns GDDR3

Yea, I found that kinda weird or shocking. 128 bit memory and such a huge clock on the memory 1400mhz.

makes it seem like ATI will be doing 16 pipelines with massive clock speeds. I dont want my video card burning up at stock speeds. YIKES

Those are the specs for the RV530............the mid to low range cards arccording to Anandtech, unless thats whate you ment.........then I am an idiot..............

Im pretty sure he ment that he didn't think they would use 128bit memory anywhere in the R5XX lineup, which is understandable.

Anyone notice that high core/mem speeds of their rv530 product? I wonder if the R520 will be able to deliver similar spee

October launch = wafer starts last week when ATI announced the R520 was "ready for production." That means the problems weren't solved until around the same time, or maybe ATI decided to live with a lower spec (if the other news was accurate yesterday). We'll see.

1.4GHz memory on a 128-bit bus for midrange?

512MB memory on a 128-bit bus for midrange?

ummm...

I'm not so much worried about pipeline count, remember, it doesn't equal the performance the way it use to in today's games.

This sort of flame bait will not be tolerated.

Is this a surpise?

Looks like rumor's where somewhat true. Mid October...ouch ati.

Seconded.

Oh, yeah, I remember looking at HeXuS review of the 256mb x800GT (it's only 8 pipelines) AND IT HIT 4600-something 3DMark05 score. That's very impressive for a 8 piped card...

Don't forget 3dmark is also very biased towards ati.

You can check for your self. Run a x800 doess matter. agaisnt an equal card on nVidia's side.

Now OC the nVidia card. It will own that x800 card even if the x800 is oced.

My friend and i tested that with his x850XT agianst my 6800GT setup.

Was quite funny

retail availability in november. LOL. ati's plan is to let everyone buy a 7800 series card then launch the r520 in october and have them available in november meaning no shortness in supply.

mmm y?

Anyways, I would want to kno the R520 spec. Hope it have 24 pipelines with 8 locked pipelines. For the memory interface, it kinda freak me out.

it's really not that bad a plan. lot's of upgrading goes on around christmas time, the current 7800gtx buyers are for the most part the "i want the newest and best now...and have the money" crowd. and please, this wasn't meant to offend anyone.

Well depending the die size it might not be able to use a 256 bit.

It didn't "HIT 4600-something" in 3DMark05, it got 3980: http://www.hexus.net/content/reviews/review.php?dXJsX3Jldmlld19JRD0xNDU2JnVybF9wYWdlPTY=

A 6600GT with 128-bit memory gets 3661 on the same graph, so 300 points for almost double the memory bandwidth and more vertex shaders isn't very impressive. I'm not knocking the x800 GT, but it's not exactly a revolutionary product like the x800 XL PCI-E was at the time. Even the NV40-based 6800nu is about the same price now.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/06/23/ati_q3_05/

ATI is loosing money left and right.

The difference about ATI and Nvidia is simple. Even when Nvidia was down, she still had her fan boys, and she was still producing SOMETHING for the consumer to buy. ATI hasn't produced any new top tier cards. They keep trying to wrestle the middle ground card spot away from Nvidia and they're failing miserably.

It was a huge mistake for ATI to go 90nm. I think that if they had gone with 110nm like NVIDIA, they wouldn't be having all of these delays.

From those R530 specs, it looks to me like R520 will be a 16-pipe card with very high clockspeeds. The mem. bus could be 128-bit or 256-bit, depending on whether ATI can fit a 256-bit bus on the 90nm die. One thing's for sure, we can pretty much forget about the rumors that it would be a 32-pipe card, and 24-pipe isn't very likely either. If ATI can make a 24- or 32-pipe card with really high clockspeeds, it might be worth the delays, but that doesn't look very likely to happen.

It is a very strategic move for ATI to release their low-mid range cards first. Most of a company's sales do not come from the top-end, they come from low-mid range and OEM sales. So, if ATI can release their low-end mid-range card before NVIDIA does, the sales from those cards will quickly make up for the sales they've lost in the top-end market.

Also, although that article has lowered our hopes of r520 blowing away the 7800GTX, there's still a chance ATI could be spending so much time on this because they want to make sure this is the best card ever made. When release date finally comes, we'll all find out whether the r520 really is something out of the ordinary, or if it turns out it isn't anything special, it performs about the same as the 7800GTX, and half of the ATI fans here will switch to NVIDIA as they do every time ATI makes another mistake.

We've seen this type of "because we can" mismatched memory configurations before, where MFGR's will do anything to sell more units, reguardless if it improves performance or not. (Example 1: 256MB FX 5200. Example 2a & b: 512MB X800XL and 6800 Ultra).

My bad, bro, look here http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=314&card2= That's where I saw the score.. I was like, lol.

links almost a month old there...

big difference is ATI R5 series is overhauled completely. Your thinking is pretty obtuse.

R530 is a cousin to the R580 btw, that chip is looking more and more like a monster refresh plan.

From whats been leaked about the R530 (4-1-3-2), what it looks like is a very fast 12pipe card with some serious memory speed which is going to meet or exceed the X800XLs and 6800GTs of the previous year. Considering the chip is a low/mid range launch at about $250 having nothing to do with the R520 and its high/mid brothers, this looks like its going to be one crazy chip.

R580 16-1-3-1
R520 16-1-1-1
R530 4-1-3-2
R515 4-1-1-1

It would also appear that ATI has no plans to release locked or otherwise pipeline hidden versions of its 16 pipe cards with its release plans.

Yup...you are missing a source for those numbers...
As the ONLY review there is linekd to dosn't show those numbers...

Terra - Wishfull thinking != facts...

It looks like a made up number. Do you happen to have a link to that 4650 score in the ORB? There are no 4650 scores in the ORB for a x800 GT in either the x800 or x800 series sections. I searched both.

The only other x800 GT review that also tested 3DMark05 confirms the Hexus score: 3875 (375/980) @ http://babelfish.altavista.com/babe...&trurl=http://www.hkepc.com/hwdb/x800gt-5.htm

So I call shens on that 4650 score with no link and no entry in the ORB. Plus, it's so out of line with the two other reviews, it easily stands out as false.

edit: thanks terra ;)

Ok pxc, yeah I didn't 100% believe it was the right score, although near 4000 is still more reasonable and impressive for a 8p card anyway.. and Terra, I thought I asked you not to quote my messages if you have nothing intelligent but insulting things to say? Thank you.

There's a reason any new HardOCP reviews don't bother with it....

Word. I could barely find 2 x800 GT reviews that used 3DMark05 as I mentioned above.

----
Bias isn't really the problem, the R300 and R300-derived cores (R3xx/R4xx) just run DX9 very well (too bad OGL performance doesn't match DX9 performance). Plus the ATI cards run at lower precision since 24-bit is all that's necessary vs 32-bit in the NV4x cards.

If it says retail availability in Nov for the XL, doesn't that mean retail availability for the XT in December at the soonest?

I had a feeling it would be ready just in time for the holidaze... I was surprized to see it was due out sooner, after the forst round of "r520 delayed" messages circulated... they were saying Q1 2006... anyways... still and all, I am hopefully that ATi will pull a rabbit out of it's hat and come back with force... just look at AMD and Intel... Anything is possible. :)

I hate 3dmark..and i hope it will die or USE a real gaming ENEGINE...till then 3dmark is useless, pointless, and biased. also it sucks. and you can't play it lol :D

what does that mean in the reveiw?

wtf is a master card.... btw... < knows nothing about crossfire...

Always two there are (for crossfire), a master and an apprentice...

That should answer your question. :D

3dmark has nothing or little to do with, or better yet, can be misleading with how a card will actually perform in a game (which is why I think [H] stopped using it) but in head to head card specific comparo's it can be a fun gauge of performance, 1 card against another of a similar type.
Today, so much depends on the system and resolution you run at that there can be no "meaningful" use except I can use it to know that things are running like they should as long as I get 4900-5000 3dm05 with my 6800gt on my A64 I know I'm in the ballpark.

Back on topic.........

Interesting figure on the R530 if rumor is true is a fill rate of 7200 MTexels (600Mhz x 12 pipes) which is the same, fillratewise, as 6800 Ultra Extreme. Not too shabby for "mid-range". Mem bandwidth is only 22.4 Gb/s though (vanilla 6800 range) I suspect that most cards don't use their total bandwidth and the R530 has that mem moving very fast. If it comes with "mid-range" price like $200-250...............looks tasty.
7800GT=8000 MTexels for $400.
