ATI R600 first look

Nobody in their right mind buys the fastest video card to run Linux.

The latest R600 rumors at Hexus have stated the following.

1: ATI targets the launch at CeBit on 14th Feb 2006
2: The Launch will most likely be paper launch with aviliblity a 1 - 2 months afterwoods.
3: Performance is rumored to be around 11,000 3Dmarks at 750MHz.

source: www.hexus.net

My opinion. If the R600 only clocks to 750MHz and scores 11,000 3Dmarks, Then ATI is buggered. The 8800GTX is currently clocked at 575MHz can easily add another 50 MHz the close the gap.
=> My guess is that ATI will have 2 versions of the cards. The usual XT at 750MHz , An XTX at 850 MHz. The questions is ? Would it be possible to do a 512MB card with a 512bit memory interface?
=> ATI better offer some form of improved AF filtering.

Hopefully ATI is BS'ing and will suprise us with a beast of a gpu (like nvidia) and release it soon. Wishful thinking i know, but that would surely put pressure on nvidia to really make its refresh kick

thats just hexus trying to sound like they know what they are talking about again, anyone remember the BS benchmarks they posted just before the X1800 finally debuted? all they were, were just OC'd X850XT's and posted as X1800's, GOOD JOB HEXUS!

Like their already proved HQ AF? honestly the AF (although is better) on the G80 is nice, and always on, I find it very hard to find discrepencies between the two, they are both nearly perfect as is, for ATI all they'd have to do is just leave it on all the time, in the same fassion as Nv's

also, a bunch of info taken from Hexus, they blunder and blunder again on information, just like Inq and people still post their stuff.

I honestly could care less when the card comes out, as long as it's out before Crysis my X1950XTX is more than enough for the latest games now.

But if it's delayed until after crysis, I just might have to get an 8800.

3: Performance is rumored to be around 11,000 3Dmarks at 750MHz.

I also think that is one of the biggest loads of crap ever, no way that's the performance of the card. ATi have always outdone nvidia in 3dmark (not that I care because I don't play 3dmark) but I find that rumor hard to believe. If it happens to be true than ATi is dead in the water.

The hexux guys are just speculating like everyone else. Nothing to see there. The editors seem like fan boys too.

I was under the impression Nvidia usually scored significantly better in 3dmark. Mainly due to texturing most of the time.

We don't know the state of play with the A13 spin but do understand that ATi has got A12 running at a speed of 1GHz.

That's around half the target speed of the production version, which is now set to arrive some time in "early" 2007 and not before Christmas as originally promised. That gives NVIDIA's faster-than-a-ferret-on-pheromones, DirectX 10 GPU - the G80 - a quarter's head-start or more.

Those are some really interesting numbers they're using in that article. If that's right R600 is running at 1GHz and that's only half speed? Nvidia would have some serious work ahead of them if they had to match a R600@2GHz. If the rumors of ATI having more transistors and using less die space than G80 are true this thing will be a performance monster. Based off just 3dmark if a R600@750MHz is faster than G80 a R600@2GHz won't even be in the same ballpark.

A 750 million trannies chip @ 2 Ghz  !!!!!

I think Hexus are trying to overshoot the INQ at the "how much BS we can put on one article" competition.

Maybe R600 will have a seperate shader domain clock ala G80?

That chip's power density is going to be closing on power density of a nuclear reactor. There is no way that chip can eat less power, have less size and have more transistors then G80 AT the same time.

Thats just theoretically impossible with current CMOS technology...

All these rumors, are just that, rumors.

Also please remember its not always about the Clock speed... Its always about how much Instructions per Cycle you can do...

Back in the day, Linux ran Quake 3 and UT just as good as, if not better than, Windows did.

Also, did you know there's more to video cards than gaming? As amazing as it sounds, a lot of people use video cards for this thing called "work," and as strange as it sounds, the entire world does NOT run on Microsoft Windows. There's plenty of people who are wishing they could run their brand new super-fast card on Linux to increase productivity, but can't due to ATI's lack of Linux support.

I've worked with hardcore linux 3D boxes for a while, and I've never seen a Radeon card in one. It's all either Fire or Quadro.

Crysis has been delayed again. You probably won't see it until at least Q3/07.

Thought it was delayed until April? It's basically the DX10 showcase so I think it's going to come out around the time Vista is released or shortly after.

Nope, it got delayed again.

Last month Electronic Arts announced a delay in the release of the Crytek developed first person shooter Crysis from the first quarter of 2007 to sometime later in the year. Now fan site InCrysis.com has gotten a note from Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli that states the usual reasons for the delay. Here is a snip:

We are focussing our efforts right now on getting the best possible experience for the widest variety of PC configs, starting from entry-level PC's up to the hard-core game rigs. Multiplayer is also an area of big focus for us right now, and we listened very hard to our fans. This includes the post-launch modding and community plans. Crysis' core single player is improving all the time - the progress I am seeing from the team right now here in Frankfurt is just staggering.

Well, it looks like they are really taking their time and trying to perfect it as much as possible. Which I'm glad for, I'd rather wait 5-6 more months and have a game that didn't come out with 20 patches right off the bat fixing bogus things that should have been polished in the dev process.

I was ready to upgrade my video card and to get vista for Crysis, now it seems that I don't have to do that quite so soon...... Hmmmm..

I agree.
IMO, Allan Wake could also be worthy of a video card upgrade. In the meantime, I know I can trust my X1950 crossfire...

But in true fashion of a Linux user, he wants his OS for free and his FireGL/Quadro graphics for Radeon/GeForce prices otherwise, bitching in the forums will take place.

Honestly, I aplaud ATI for not wasting my consumer dollars for R&D on drivers for an OS like Linux.

I love how Hexux simultaneously start rumors of ridiculesly high R600 specs and at the same time suggests it won't be as good as the G80.

Ah yes... good point.
But those cards are expensive for a reason.
Gotta pay to play, in the workstation world. But who cares... no consumer ever really buys those cards. The majority of sales are to big companies who don't even notice spending $2400 on graphics cards for a single user.

graphics cards should not be allowed to be launched so close to tax refund time. it makes the temptation so much harder to resist damnit.

yeah well, if you knew what you were doing, and played your exemptions correctly, you would not have a refund coming, you would have more in each paycheck and not be giving the govt a n interest free loan throughout the year

my brother in law and his family depend on Walmart and a 7k tax refund each year to survive, i despise that lifestyle

not true many people feel that free software and non-free software can co-exist on the linux platform. And as pointed out, having good ati drivers would be nice for those of us who run open-gl accelerated desktops like beryl/compiz, or anything else that takes advantage of the video card while using an os thats virus and spyware free....

Think corporate.

You own a large corporation with 10,000 employees. All of them need to work on their own computer, or more than just one computer. All of them need windows. Windows costs lots and lots of money, especially 10,000+ liscenses. You can either pay $100 a liscense (that's 1+ million dollars), or go Linux and save yourself a crapload of money, putting that $1mil into better hardware for faster rendering/compiling, ie overall productivity.

One million dollars (or more) is a lot of money that won't be going to ATI hardware.

You lose in the longrun.

You wouldn't believe how stupid and set in their way people can be from the top of the corporate ladder on down.

Story of my life in the corporate world.

Looks like ATI just all but confirmed the 512bit memory bus rumors. If those 2GHz rumors hexus had going are true I see one serious thrashing on the way.

Where did you hear the 2(two) GHz rumors from? I think you might have mis quoted hexus.

Hexus said:
Seemingly, ATi has been aiming to achieve 11,000 3DMark scores at 750MHz. That's tasty and may mean the R600 offers a strong challenge to NVIDIA's G80 GPU given that, as we reported in HEXUS.Beanz a few hours ago, ATi's already got samples running at 1GHz and has higher targets in mind.

Hexus said:

If I go by that the chip is running at 1GHz and that's around half speed. So 2x1GHz = 2GHz. And with the first quote if 750MHz=11,0003DMarks then 2GHz would put the card approaching 30,0003dmarks. Of course I'm sure they got their numbers wrong. A simple 1GHz sounds much more realistic than 2GHz at this point.

On the other hand if they mixed up their numbers 2GHz would be reasonable for GDDR4 and a 750MHz+ core seems much more likely.

Yeah, 2GHz is a typo or the editor is an idiot. Judging for the rest of the artical, it could be either.

digitalfreak said:
I'd place my money on "idiot".

Apparently it's like 2ghz for something dealing with shaders and 750-850mhz for the actual core; sort of like how it is for the G80.

digitalfreak said:

I'd place my money on "We don't know the whole story yet so lets refrain from diminishing peoples intellect" ;)

The 2GHz might not be all that unreasonable if it's a shader domain and not a core clock. Keep in mind on a 8800GTX the shaders are running at 1.35GHz and they're using a 90nm process. R600 will be using a 80nm process which would give them a slight boost.
