I AM FURIOUS! I will never EVER buy a laptop for gaming especially from Alienware. What a disappointment after paying almost 3 thousand dollars for something that should be running doom3 at least at 30FPS. I am wondering if there are any work arounds for crashing after 5-10 mins into the game at 800x600 / medium quality :( . Am I the only one?
running on:
Area-51m
3 Ghz
512 ram
ati mobility 9600 128 ram with latest drivers 4.7 offered by alienware's support.

thanks

Doesn't that have upgradeable graphics?

If so.. upgrade to the 9800 chip.

Seriously.. it's a 9600. That's your problem. I do feel bad for you but I would figure that when you are investing 3,000 into a laptop.. you would know what you are getting.

EDIT: Oh I thought performance was your problem. If it's stability, grab the 4.8 betas, they work flawlessly for me but I don't have Doom 3 yet.. tommorrow hopefully :(

Google is about to ban me ... I have been searching for mobility drivers 4.8 for the past 36 hours. There is absolutely NOT a thing for mobility besides 4.7. Catalyst drivers are different story but they are uncompatable with mobility boards.

I came across few people suggesting the same. Will give it a try when I get home. Thank you

I have been using this modding tool for quite a while. It changes regular drivers so that they are compatible with mobilty chipsets.

Using this tool instead of Omega drivers on my notebook (Inspiron 9100) because I get better performance with the 9700 mobility.

I imagine that these will work on 4.8 betas as well and there is not an Omega version for the 4.8 that I'm aware of. I plan on moding the 4.8 betas for my notebook if ATI does not release 4.8 today (which I imagine they might).

I hope you got the notebook with the upgradeable graphics... cuz well the 9600 mobile isnt that great. However, if you did you can upgrade to the all new 9800 mobile its much faster and you should be able to play doom3 at 1024x768 with med quality and good frames.

I have a laptop with an athlon 64 3200+ @ 2.0 ghz, 800 mhz fsb, 1 gb ddr400 ram, and a 128mb dedicated ati radeon mobility 9600 agp 8x.

Every game i have runs perfectly (halo, farcry, need for speed underground), except doom 3... no mater hwat setting si put it on, after it finishes loading a level, it gets an illegal operation in atioglxx.dll :(

Im currently using the most rescent omega drivers... can anyone shed some light on this problem?

Have you tried running Driver Cleaner in safe mode and reinstalling the drivers.

But that laptop had a Geforce go 5700. You have a mobility 9600. The mobility 9600 isn't that great of a graphics chipset. The Geforce isn't either but it is better for doom 3. I don't thinks it's a matter of your chipset not being able to handle doom 3 though as it may be a compatibility issue. You might have to wait for a driver update or an update for doom 3.

im a noob, but i've been browsing these forums for the better part of two years, i used to have the same issue with 9700pro, just locate the smartgart app under the c:/ati folder and disable agp writes, that fixed my prob.

i SERIOUSLY doubt that my problem is caused by the 9600 mobility card not being able to handle doom 3. The mobility 9600 128mb card can do EVERYHTING a 9800 xt can do, just slower. In terms of performance, a 9800 xt is approx 2.2 times faster than his car d(this card scores 3512 on 3dmark03, the 9800xt (all on default setings) scores 7731.

I run farcry in 1024x768, all details very high, 4x AF, and get playable framerates (hardly any noticeable jerking). Dropping settings to medium, and leaving texture quality on very high, it never jerks. the laptop scores 23144 on aquamark3 too. It plays Halo on max settings with very minimal jerking too.

In benchmarks, my laptop (A64 3200+ @ 2.0 ghz, 800 mhz fsb, 1024 mb ddr400 ram, 128mb radeon 9600 agp8x dedicated) scores higher than a laptop with a 3.06 ghz p4 w/ht and 128mb geforce go 5700 (only very slightly though)
but yes, the geforce does perform a bit better in doom, since the geforce card has much better opengl support. 9600 chipsets may not be amazing, but they are far frm inadequate for the latest games.

Note, i have reinstalled omega drivers, and the game works now. Make sure you choose STANDARD opengl drivers, and not SPECIAL ones for older games, and oyu should have no problems ;) I still need to test it, but the game is running... in 1024x768 absolute max detail on the opening level, i get around 20 fps.. not bad for a modest 9600 ;)
runs fine in high gfx quality 800x600
