ATi fastest in Quake4

The GT is also 256MB, what does that have to do with anything? XT may be "released" on the 5th but that does not mean it will be available for sale.

I could also mention that NVIDIA has a 512MB part and possibly an Ultra on the way, but that is not relevant to the conversation.

can you buy that card now?!?! does it exist?!?! this is basically the shit u post'

where is this mythical 7800ultra 512!?

I'm blind, right at the bottom of the User CP. Thanks, both I and the board mods thank you.

It's a beautiful thing, isn't it. With him and Rollo gone, the boards are just so much more intelligent and pleasant.

Anyway, that XT is one hell of a card. Too bad I'm stuck at 1280x768 on my WS LCD so I have no use for such fancy things. Well, that and the XL overclocks a TON (memory at least).

I know you were just spoon-feeding Prime his own tactics back at him, but does anyone really think NVIDIA won't have a 512MB 7800 ready next month? Honestly, I'd be very surprised if one isn't announced and readily available in November. No idea, though, if it'll be a Ultra variant or not, yet I do expect at least a minor clock increase on the GPU itself.

These tweaks are likely to work out to be a great boon for all ATI gamers that run into a DOOM 3 engine game in the next few years, and seeing these sorts of memory optimizations made is certainly going to inspire competition that focuses somewhere else just besides being GPU-specific.

If you guys want to argue your points, that is great, just make sure not to write checks your ass can't cash.

Bottom line is that ALL of you should be happy, it is this sort of competition that inspires the entire graphics industry.

Given that ATI did not release all of its parts on the same day, it can be assumed that they're going to try for a straight hard launch, because if they don't, then they're screwed compared to nvidia's hard launch. Giving themselves and extra month to prepare and ship parts out to retailers just so they can make a hard launch is a plausible possibility.

Either way, it's a wait and see game. It is not yet november 5th, and even if and when they release, what's it to you? You're obviously not going to buy them, so why are you putting up such a fight?

One thing that really stands out, though, is that even with the hotfix installed those XLs still lag behind the GTs the bulk of the time.

That is in Ultra Q. Strange enough in High Quality mode the XL is faster than the GT.

Oh you mean this "supposed" video card that hasn't been announce
Sounds the the GTX 512 is a piece of crap and vaporware with your mentality

wouldn't that be teh same arguement you always give for the XT?
This thread was how the XT is beating the GTX.

Yeah well he didn't use those words as crap did he?

Anyhow Quake 4 performance for ATi is because of the extra bandwidth it has over the g70. Look at how the x1800xl scales, it scales exactly like all other games just a bit lower then the the 7800 GT, perfect example look at the tests without AA, they are very very close. AA only stresses the memory bandwidth. It has nothing to do with GPU technology or more shader power or what not.

wowsa......That X1800 series looks so promising now.....Now they have to get out the XT on the 5th and I might be sold, We shall see what nvidia comes up with.

Would ATi effectively be able to do this 'optimization' (only word I can think of but I know it's memory efficiency) for D3D games or even games individually?

no one is saying its because it can process a whole 300 bagillion gigaflops faster then any other card out there, its just that one simple optimization was done to the way it sees the doom3 engine (does chronicles of riddick run off of the doom3 engine?) using the new MC, with such a simple "fix" it is very astronomical and could prove to be usefull for both companies, instead of having faster hardware it could end up who can come out with drivers to take advantage of their hardware faster

they can optimize the MC for any engine, be it d3d or openGL, seeing as how dismal their opengl performance was compared to the competition i believe they decided to optimize it for a popular openGL title first, get some press off of it and work on other titles, i kind of can't wait to see how their openGL driver rewrite will effect this performance over all (maybe another 10% performance for the doom3 engine?)

i'm sure we'll see op's for the fear engine and the source engine (even if it doesn't need it)

Too bad my X800XT PE is still useless for Q4... But I wasn't expecting them to do anything for non X1000 cards.

Also Riddick runs off an in-house engine made by the starbreeze guys. They're really awesome it's a lot better than D3.

They're re-writing the OGL drivers which will affect all cards (they will be released 'when it's done' :p). And do you mean a better engine or better game? I agree with agme but engine wise I find the D3 more impressive (look at Prey for instance)

More than likely, yes. The thing is, app-specific optimisations take time, and that's why there is at the moment only a blanket patch for the OGL API. Hopefully, it may end up something like nVidia's SLI database, where new profiles are available for most new games with each update, but in the event such a profile is missing, or not yet finished, an optimisation can be applied for the type of engine or API that game is using.

Give it time. These cards only hit the market less than two weeks ago. The GT has been on the market since the first day of quakecon (August 11th). Price decay will happen, just wait until after thanksgiving...

Yea the GT has been out for a long time now. Plenty of time for Nvidia to work on thier drivers. Nvidia hasnt shown nearly the performance increase in driver/memory optimizations that ATI has. I simply want the fastest card on the market. I'm glad I waited for the XT :D

If they are doing an Ogl rewrite. Why would you think it was specifically for an engine. Its not like the Doom 3 engine's AA routines aren't outside of of Ogl specifications. It calls Ogl to do the AA methods thats why it effected all Ogl games, just happened to increase Doom 3's more. Most likely conclusion Doom 3 uses more polygons that require more processing power for AA. Actually I know it uses more polygons then the other Ogl games ;) that you mentioned.

I don't see this increase would be possible in D3D because of how the card scales depending on clocks and differences from previous generation cards.

They aren't doing an Open GL rewrite, they changed the way their memory controller works with 4X AA.

Holy moly. Maybe that 7800GTX I bought last week was a mistake. Perhaps I should've waited an extra couple weeks and gone with the XT. :(

I wonder if eVGA will let me tradeup to a 512MB GTX if it comes out. I hope so... Should I think about returning my GTX to newegg?

Ya i would of held off myself. (which is what im doing) but the 7800GTX is still a good card, and its available....so Its your call

Yes they are it's just a matter of when it will be released (been promised for a long long time now). Hopefully we will see somehting like 10% increase in OGL performance :D

Sigh. That was my whole point. I COULD have mentioned those cards, but since they don't exist yet it would hardly be relevant.

You could always hold out for something better, because there will always be something better coming.

New OpenGL performance or not, I doubt you'd notice much difference in practice between the cards, and I can almost guarantee it will be some time before a X1800XT costs what you paid for your GTX.

This thread is about the memory controller tweak, not the fabled OpenGL rewrite that as you say, has been promised for a long long time.

We have no reason to believe that it's being done, or is anywhere close to completion that I know of.

Well FWIW I hope you're right dude. If I wanted to return it right away, even unopened, it'd cost me $65-70 restocking fee @ newegg. So I'm stuck with it regardless.

I'll be a little consoled if the X1800XT ends up costing $549 or more and stays there for at least a few months.

that's the whole idea of having the programmable memory controller like it is, so they can improve memory efficiency for specific apps or apps in general

i think that's great, ATI really put a lot of thought into improving the memory controller, they did a good job

from our review - http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=ODIyLDU=

The memory controller itself is fully programmable. This means that ATI can tweak the drivers and improve memory bandwidth efficiency per application or game. For example, ATI could discover that certain memory prioritizations work better in a certain game. ATI could then program the drivers so that when that game is being played, the memory controller will be specially optimized for that game. This has great potential for future drivers to provide improved memory read and write efficiency in games.

You cant almost guarantee anything. You can only Guess.
Try to rain on their parade in your typical fashion. Personaly I see this MC as a great Success for Graphics Cards in General. All it means is better FPS and IQ for us. And we are just seeing the Tip of the Iceburg. I cant wait to get a X1800XT when it comes out or shortly thereafter.

This is really exciting as I'm in the market for a new graphic card. I was going to wait for NVidia to release their 512MB card and get that, but now with ATI's MC feature.. I'll keep my eye on their 512MB cards. Competition is so great for the end user. =)

Existing and available are two different things. The x1800xt does exist. Available: no. Release date: yes. ATI seems to be pretty good so far without paper launching.

If you launch a products and send it to reviewers and its not available in stores then that is a papaer launch. It doesn't matter if you give a release date some 1 or 2 months down the line. The only question is is it available or not.

In case of the X1800XT the answer is "not available" - plain and simple.
I think i don't need to remind you what release date ATI initially gave regarding crossfire.

Or Nvidia with SLi.

Once again with the mentality : only nvidia can correct their past mistakes

the X1800XT was released to bencharkers with the intended release date of november 5th, i don't see how people keep calling this a paper launch? releasing hardware to a reviewer is not "launching" your item, i just wish the x1600's came when the XL's did

well actually i thought it was app specific since what ATI was telling hexus was the performance was to be gained with D3

It looks like [H] did ATI a pretty big favor (though unintentionaly) by holding off on reviewing the 1800XT - as the benchmarks in thier review will be much more impressive now.

Engine and game are both a lot better than D3/Q4. Riddick is the best FPS since Deus Ex.

Also they are taking their sweet time with the opengl rewrite so yeah I am pretty screwed.
