hooray for crapalyst

so i installed the newest version, used the catalyst uninstaller tool to remove previous versions

during the install, i get a "zero service display error"

fine and dandy, install continues with WDM drivers and control center

now my computer refuses to boot in safe mode

in regular boot, it becomes unresponsive after about 20 seconds

any ideas?

btw, ive got an X800pro

install another spare videocard in hopes that it won't load the catalyst driver? Then do another catalyst uninstall and try again after you set the video to a generic vga driver?

What version of windows with what service packs? Do you have .net framework installed? Do you have the latest drivers for your chipset installed?

I'd recommend using DriverCleaner after running the uninstall util for any video card or soundcard.

why does EVERYONE have problems with ati drivers? ive got 5.4's and had them since march this year and they have ran perfect on every game ive not had even one problem!!

magnetik- this would be hard, seeing as it would require an almost complete disassembly of my system (its a shuttle...watercooled, the hoses pose an installation problem), is there any way to set the system to a generic vga driver without booting windows (i.e. [H]ard DOS)...

m0unds- SP2, no idea, yes, and if windows decides to cooperate ill use drivercleaner

Mayhs- ive gotten zero display errors my entire ati-driven life, from back when i hate a Radeon 7000 32mb SDR, it just never fucked it up this bad usually

would doing a repair of XP solve this problem?

i have NEVER had a problem with any ATI driver, dating back as far as an ATI Fury.

I had some problems with some earlier NV drivers with a GeForce 3, but they were resolved quickly.

And Luca, you could try to do a repair of windows--- i'd make sure the .net framework is installed if you can do that with your present predicament. if you can get it to boot stable for long enough to make changes, try that..but at 20 seconds, it's hard to do much, as i'm sure you're aware.

I'm a real advocate for the whole R&R game (reformat and reinstall) with computers-- i make a point to reinstall windows at LEAST once a year, and sometimes more frequently if it's bad enough.

Since you have about 20 seconds of response when you get into windows.. see if you can do a system restore to yesterday or just before you installed the drivers.

m0unds, while i would absolutely LOVE to reformat and reinstall, the idea of backing up 100gb of, shall we say, "backups" of ..[somebody's] dvd collection (among other things) is not exactly daunting, as fucking crazy for a lazy person like me, and this would be assuming that i could do so in 20 seconds

i ran a repair, its finishing now, updates to come

and i must thank MrE for his very valuable contribution

yeah im sry bout that im in a mood today. must be all the 'new card about to come out' hormones flying about.

i have no ideas to help ya man. :(

its ok i love you anyway

do you want to hug it out?

lets hug it out bitch

::hugs MrE::

ok so a restore didnt work

but i realized that i had a 30gig partition on my drive that i was saving for x86 tiger (cos my cousin at apple tipped me off about it long ago)

so im gonna install windows on that, and use that oppurtunity to back up my files, then format the entire drive to start afresh (combination of fresh, and anew)

anyone got a MASSIVE, FAST private ftp that they can lend me for a couple days?

I've never had a single driver problem, and the only driver I didn't install was like the 5.7 because they specifically listed a bug with BF2 and the X800XT AIW.

This may sound stupid, but you do have FastWrites turned off the BIOS, right? Also, if your BIOS has an option that reads something like "Assign IRQ VGA", make sure that is on; this basically forces a hardware level IRQ to the video card so you don't get IRQ conflicts.

One last thing, if you have a Creative Labs sound card, with their craptacular drivers, remove them and the card, then try your VC driver install.

I totally agree. Setting a hardware level IRQ and disabling fastwrites could indeed help. FastWrites can cause lots of headaches on certain setups--i also agree with trying to run a system restore back to the last good restore point. that's saved me lots of heartache before.

(creative labs' drivers are indeed some pretty nasty wang.. )
