ATi Control Center

Where is the "VSYNC Slider" that is mentioned in The Hard-OCP review?
They say it is in the "no preview" window, but I must be blind because I can't see it on my computer or on their screen shot.

Under no preview it will say "wait for display refresh" same as vsync just worded different.

I for one will be sticking with the old control panel for a while since I have a problem with my monitor's refresh rates dating back to cat 3.6 which only the monitor tab could fix.

The problem is windows always detects my monitor as a "default monitor" whenever I update the drivers, so the drivers decide to lock my monitor at 60Hz. The only way I can get around it is to go in the control panel's monitor tab and adjust the max refresh rate. Unfortunately, the new control panel detects my Multisync 97F as "default monitor" and gives me no option to set the max refresh rate.

I'm kinda SOL for now I think. The other problem is I don't want .NET installed on my system. It's something I will never use for any other program.

under no privew mode if you go to displays manager and right click on the little monitor and choose device properties it should have all the options you need there to fix your problem.

Thanks for the responses. I did not notice that the bottom section of the "No Preview" tab had a scroll bar. If I had scrolled down I would have found it. Oh well, live and learn.

It works pretty good for me, no problems as of yet. It doesnt add too much to the load time on starting windows, but I just wish we could disable the viewing of the splash screen on startup. On a sidenote there a few typing and spelling errors in the Help section, hehe oops.

Why are people bitching about about no seperate D3D + OpenGL panels? You can make GAME SPECIFIC SETTINGS. Christ.

Have any of you guys installed the new control center and upon shutting down windows keep getting the "can't close ati.ace/cli.exe" responses. I have to manuallyh click "end now" 2 times before windows shuts down.

First of all, I'm noticing significant issues with this new CPP. 5Mb of memory in use when it isn't doing anything? 7 open TCP ports? What???

Yes, part of the problem isbecaue they wrote it in .Net and .Net will allow you to write bloated software easier then some languages, but allowing you to write bloated software does not mean you have to.

I'm a programmer and let me tell you that you don't want to load the .NET crap on your PC. It a major resource hog. It will eat up your memory and slow your system down to a crawl.
I'm a programmer too. The Control Center is bloated, is appears to have a memory leak. When I first opened it to the video preview window cli.exe was using about 8Mb between two processes. It has slowly crawled up to 15Mb (was 12 when I started this sentance). it is now at 16Mb. It has 28 open TCP ports.

From a programmers standpoint this doesn't necessarally mean that .Net sucks or that .Net is to blame for slowing down the system. This is like blaming C++ when your game crashes. Yes .Net is a resource hog compared to languages like .Net, but compared to other interpreted languages like Java or Python the difference is much, much smaller. Then, I am sure you have done a comparison like that before making your above conclusions. So you probably already know that compared to a C++ program all three of the above languages are incredible resource hogs, using insane amounts of memory just to display simple forms.

As for the Control Center, I am uninstalling it. It is bloated, it has crashed a couple times, it is not worthy of being a released piece of software (beta maybe). And it doesn't give me any functionality that I couldn't use the old one for...

I also uninstalled it. .net with control pannel lagged out my system when I was in-game... and I am not going to lower my in-game settings just so I can run bloatware.

I have zero problems with it now. It doesnt slow down my comp at all. I just dont like all the processes it runs but they don't put such a tremendous burden on my system that it cant do anything or lag any of my games.

Still having issues with the new Control Center and Windows XP's remote desktop feature -- the control center EXE will start to use insane amounts of memory and CPU when a remote client connects. 100% CPU, and 100+ megabytes of memory.

I've reported the bug to ATI, but they haven't gotten back to me. Probably never will. They tend not to care about these things. I remember back when I had a Rage Pro, and it would consistently not render hi-color icons in Windows 95/98 properly. Their solution was to run the adapter in 256 color mode. Pfft. Then finally a year later they fix the issue.

I ganked it, the program just doesnt seem to be well written. Also, when removing it retained "control" over 3D settings, so I have to reinstall the 4.9 completely....using the old control panel.

Nice thought, but do it better next time, then we'll consider it again.

As we know from Chris's public statements, ATI cant bring itself to just BUY something outright...like Radlinker/Clocker... that works, and then integrate it. That would be too sensible and reasonable. Instead they put an intern on it, write some trash, underwhelm thier customers and generally do a lousy job on the first go...S.O.P at ATI.
