I know ATI has been promising these for months, but is there any update on some cheaper active displayport adapters? I wanted to get a cheaper ATI 5xxx card for work for three monitors, but buying a $99 adapter sort of defeats the purpose of buying a cheaper card.
 
If your work monitors are not huge resolution, consider getting a $25 DP to VGA adapter. Those work without needing to be active.

Really? Whats "not huge resolution"? I thought all the adapters had to be active to work with Eyefinity
 
IIRC VGA can do 1920x1080 (1080p), but it might look a slight bit blurrier but don't quote me on this, my monitors are 1680x1050

Its not blurrier, but its analog, so its the same as using a VGA cable vs. DVI. Hit autoadjust on the screen and most will be fine with this. :)

Or maybe the ones that Monoprice carries then? It'd be nice to know. There are a few Eyefinity videos on youtube where they say they are using passive VGA adapters.
 
thats interesting. i think it will only do 1080 because vga can only produce up to a 1080 picture, not that the adapter isnt able too. anything higher than 1920x1080 will need dvi, hdmi, or dp for the monitor to be able to produce a picture. atleast that was what i found out when doing my research.

I'm looking for the active displayport dongles, however. My screens are all 1600x1200, so the VGA one might work, but just on principle I'll wait (also I'd rather avoid any hassles.)

Guess ATI isn't in any hurry :(

Wait for what? Passive adapters won't ever work. Not now, not ever. I highly doubt ATI has any plans on the 6xxx series supporting 3x DVI, either.

VGA can produce 2048x1536 on most displays. On LCD's they use a reduced blanking mode, so they are perfectly capable all of them to support a 8-bit 1920x1200@60hz over DP->VGA. Some are listed with support for 12-bit and 10-bit, which require higher bandwidth. Don't worry if they are only listed as 1080P some of them. :)

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear enough. I don't think ATI is working on that at all. You're stuck with $100 active dp->dvi adapters for quite a while. Really if you've got the monitors you should pick up the cheaper active VGA adapters and have fun. Optimistically ATI *might* eventually get $50 adapters, but probably not (or if they do they'll probably cost more). Is it worth waiting for months for something that might not come out and likely will only save $20-40?

To those of you looking to try the DP to vga adapter - trust me on this, I tried it - I have 3 1680x1050 monitors and the highest resolution I could get out of it was 1024x768. It is a waste of time and money, you're welcome to try though - in fact if someone wants to try the DP to VGA adapter I have still (monoprice) PM me, but I am warning you, I had no luck.
 
id give it a try if anyone is looking out there. my mono price dp-vga runs 1920x1080 wonderfully

The OP of the WSGF thread was running 3840x1024 so there's proof showing that one can get 1280x1024 per monitor with a VGA to DP adapter.

HDMI and DVI use the same video signal, so just get an active DP->DVI adapter and then a passive DVI->HDMI adapter (which are like $5 at monoprice)

You have a bad adapter or something wrong with your setup.

My friend just showed me his Eyefinity setup with three 24" 1920 x 1200 monitors on a 5870 using a $25 DP to VGA adapter he found locally.

You could be right. I'm pretty sure I'd read that at 1600x1200 you really want to use the DVI interface for best picture quality. I normally wouldn't make a big issue of $50, but I was planning on getting a video card that is under $100, so the adapter costing more than the card just seems crazy.

This was just for work, not playing games, so not too much "having fun" :)
