ati 5770...cant install drivers!

i've got a bit of a problem here...trashed my 4870, went for a 5770. yes gtx460 is better, but i simply can't afford the extra $50 for it right now.

on win7 ultimate 64-bit
corsair 620HX psu before anyone asks ;)
and yes the power plug is in the card.

anyways, i figured should be as simple as pull my 4870 and replace with the 5770 seeing as its all ati drivers. well no dice, says it cant find an ati card!

ok so next i proceed to uninstall ati drivers, run driver sweeper to get all the remains. restart, and install cat 10.7.

heres where it gets fun - win7 locks on startup every time with the ati driver. i cant get past the idiot windows logo. the startup recovery states 'bad driver'.

then i tried same process with cat 10.6...same result.

so...i'm trying to figure out if i need to reinstall windows, etc. or if i got a dud card that tells me where to stick it as soon as the driver tries to startup.

any help is appreciated! THANKS!
 
I recently changed from a 3870 to 5870. When I switched the cards and booted up win7, the ati catalyst thing said I had no adapter. So I installed 10.7 and rebooted and it worked fine. Press F8 before windows boots and try last known good. Then reinstall the driver.
 
as ive stated, ive already installed the driver(s) multiple times. sorry if i was unclear. also, i have to use the 'last known good configuration' to get windows to boot once it chokes on the driver. this seems to remove the device driver.
 
uninstall the driver reseat the card then boot up then install driver and see how that goes
 
well driver is currently uninstalled, no point in it installed if it crashed winblows:p

i'll try the reseat, that crossed my mind as well
 
ok i got this figured out, here's the fix for anyone that gets this problem:

in msconfig simply disable all non MS services. something was in the way of the driver, god knows what.

if anyone cares, turns out to be the services associated with my creative x-fi...raise your hand if you are surprised. nobody? thought so:p
 
are you getting a message stating that CCC cannot start cause there is no ATi card? simple fix ack the message and then install the new drivers
