This question probably belongs in the Motherboard section, but I thought it would be better to ask here.

I'm debating upgrading my current AthlonXP system to an Athlon64. I've been looking around at motherboard reviews, but nothing beats actual user experience. So my questions to you all are:

1. If you're running Linux withan A64, what chipset / motherboard are you using?

2. Have you had any problems configuring your motherboard to work in Linux?

Thanks for reading / posting replies to this thread.

Running a Tyan K8S pro (dual socket 940), AMD8111 chipset i believe. Everything is flawless.

i helped my friend set up 64bit gentoo on his MSI K8T-Neo2 FIR (via kt800), which worked flawlessly. but in my opinion nvidia chipsets are a good deal faster under linux, and i know they work without hiccups as well, so i'd try and find a nforce3 250Gb or nforce4 based board.
linux chipset preferences, least to best. i've no clue where the ati chipsets fit in because they're not on the public market yet

I don't even think there are any ali (uli) chipsets for A64....aren't they just using a rebadged amd8151 chipset and calling it something else?

I use nf3 250 chipset for my amd64 rig. I also built a server which used the nf3 150.

Both worked after some initial configuration. I used a debian64 installer from August which had some bugs, and I think they worked them out with the late november / early december builds.

The installer for debian is still beta and there's a new one released every day. My problem in August (8-11 build) was that the default kernel installed was SMP and I dont have a SMP board, and it would cause my onboard ethernet to stop working after a random time (30 seconds to 5 mins). It was a pain to get a new kernel downloaded in that time period. My current rig used the installer from late november and it worked except for the ethernet detection. I had to use the forcedeth module to get it working for instal, but once it was up, a kernel upgrade fixes and detects everything. I'm trying to think whats important, I got USB2.0, 1394 ports, onboard LAN, sata interfaces, and onboard sound all working flawlessly out of the box once I got the most modern kernel. After that, I compiled my own kernels for the boxes to get rid of stuff that I dont need/want.

To fully answer your question:

1. Shuttle SN85G4V2 (I believe is a V2) with Nforce3 150 and a DFI lanparty nforce3 250gb.

2. Debian installer did not find my onboard ethernet, and installed a SMP kernel, but that was a fault of the install program. Kernel upgrade fixes all issues.

yeah, they are. they're very stable, but not very fast as compared to other solutions, especially the AGP controller which lags far behind. i'm also pretty sure they're only available in eurasia. At least, i've never seen any for sale in the US.
