AT&T DSL issues--just me?

I'm having some extremely weird issues with AT&T/Yahoo DSL and was wondering whether I'm the only one with these issues, or whether it's widespread.

Randomly, completely randomly, it just stalls out--any downloads I have running stop and crash. Internet is inaccessible for five to ten minutes. The router and modem check out, the wiring supposedly checks out(AT&T came in and rewired the house when I complained to them). My parents, due to the fact that I set up the router to unblock my computer for multiplayer gaming, now believe that resetting the router(and blocking my computer entirely) is the only way to keep the connection from dropping. Strangely, if all of my computers are shut down, it SUPPOSEDLY works without glitches. Nothing I'm running causes known issues from my experience, though. Unless Vista eats network bandwidth for no reason....
I'm kinda desperate here for some advice and/or ISP suggestions!

Thanks in advance!

so, if your pc is unplugged does the internet access still have problems?
does the router logs show the wan status dropping?

Unplugging the computer(from the wall, even--my mom is of the opinion that that actually ACCOMPLISHES something for the network)...does nothing. Network still randomly drops.

It's an AT&T proprietary(read: 2WIRE) modem/wireless router. No logs that I can find and an extremely locked down config program. I tried a different modem/router with no better luck. Incoming line, according to AT&T, is fine.

Ive replaced the 2wire units with Speedstream and Motorola DSl modems, no problems

maybe wiring?

This is a very strange problem, I've never had any issues with my AT&T DSL ... JOOC which 2Wire unit are you using?

It's a 1701HG Gateway.

It's not wiring, AT&T replaced the wiring in the house when we complained, and nothing's changed. Also, all computers except one are on wireless--no wiring there to worry about. Signal strength never goes below 80% on any of the computers.

Have you tried decreasing the max download rate? Maybe when you get to a certain point it causes the crash?

Welcome to unreliable DSL.

I'll PM you a number you can call- can get them to move you to a different port in central office.

i had their dsl service and then switch to their uverse service and they were both nightmares. after a year of fighting with them i gave up and went with road runner

AT&T DSL sucks IMHO. We have it at work, one of my friends had it before they went to RR, one of my other friends still has it and still hates it, but hes not paying for it.

on the other hand, Ive had ATT DSL for ~5yrs without problem.....

and there are always exceptions. I've met people who hate road runner w/ a passion. But in this area that's a rare thing. ATT just plain sucks period in this area. for phone AND internet. Even most businesses are starting to drop them and go to TWC RR

My personal experiences are OK. Had some issues with connection intermittently dropping, after switching me over in central office to another panel it fixed the problem. But my issues have been with billing.
Being a business, got multiple phone numbers. Multiple internet connections at one location. Their billing got all this confused, and decided to cut one of the numbers dead (which our DSL road on). Took probably 12 hours to get back up and running.
The problem with DSL (even business-class) is you've got your more entry-level techs that many don't give a darn, earning your base pay.

With MIS (T1s, DS3s, etc) you've got folks that have worked their way up (And probably know a thing or two), and also get paid more money and don't just slop their way through things to fill out a work order.

Does you broadband link light start flashing or change colors? Thats a pretty old 2wire gateway, If you can just pickup one of the newer ones and put your email address and password in it and test it out, if it doest solve your prob, reset and return it. You can pick the new 2wires up at like best buy for like 80 bucks or something.
