I was reading some random OCing article on C2D OCing and the 680i eVGA board (IGN.com), and noticed that in the bios you can set the memory in unlinked mode to whatever you want it to be. How I missed it I have no idea :).

Does this actually work? Are there any stability issues or performance hits?

I might buy a 680i board just to try this out :D.

yep, works. you can go sync or async, tho sync is supposed to be faster. I've tried both and not had stability issues with either.

According to VR-Zone, it makes no difference. Just crank your memory up as far as it'll go! I run mine unlinked since your CPU, memory, and FSB will all have different limits depending on your samples. This way, you can overclock each up to their individual limits.

Heres cpu @ stock and memory @ 1200...

Why are you at 2T command rate? I thought that the 680i could handle even 4 DIMMS at 1T!

Because he's running DDR2-1200!

Yes they can do 1T, but only under DDR2-900 usually.

So how big is the performance hit going asynch? Any? Minimal?

"I made it a point to investigate if there was any performance advantage runnning the Memory and FSB linked rather than unlinked. FSB 1066MHz Linked (800MHz Memory) vs FSB 1066MHz Unlinked (a bit over 800MHz Memory).
Nope no advantage what so ever! All that mattered was the Memory speed it is running, be it linked or unlinked. This means that tweakers should just concentrate on getting their Memory to work at it's best speed and dial it in unlinked from the FSB. This should be the way to optimize performance, dial in your best FSB speed and your best Memory Speed and that's it!"

Sorry, missed that from that review :). Thanks for posting it again.

Heres quick comparo @ 3-3-3-1T mem. @ 704 and 4-4-4-2T mem. @ 1006 both settings with FSB and Mem. unlinked @ 3D '06 tests...
