I was making a checklist of things to do for my new build, including updating to the latest BIOS.

Has anyone used the ASUS Update Utility before? Tool included on the drivers CD which allows you to download BIOS updates and then update BIOS inside the Windows environment?

I was wondering if it's known to have any issues, if it will get the job done same as flashing BIOS the old-fashioned way would.

Thanks in advance!

i heard its a POS and (has a reasonable chance to) brick your board. but that's just what i heard.

+1 for the OP. I am going to be flashing my bios soon, so any input (especially if it can cause problems) would be appreciated.

i've used the asus update utility many times for several boards that range from the 939 socket a8n sli to my latest asus board the maximus formula se. hasn't killed one yet, but that really doesn't mean anything considering the number of asus board owners out there.

It works, but is terribly slow due to ASUS website. I mean TERRIBLY slow. Did I mention that ASUS' site was slow?

I've used it when I got my P5K and it ran normally with no issues, but I keep hearing that it might mess up your computer so I think the next bios update I will do, I'm just going to use the normal method.

I thinks it easier to just download the bios to your thumbdrive and use EZ Flash2 to update your bios. I tried to use the Asus Update utility back when I had my P4C800 E mb, but the utility could never connect to the Asus server.

+1 on the thumb drive.... Put the new bios on a thumb drive-- restart-- and hit alt f2 and that should bring up the bios update page.. Then select the bios on your thumb drive and away it goes...

Yes,yes,yes.........Do download your BIOS file to a thumbdrive, DO flash the BIOS using ASUS EZ Flash.

DO NOT use the windows utility, DO NOT use the windows utility.

Dont use the windows utility.:eek::eek:

There are scores of bricked BIOS from that utility all over this forum.
EZ Flash is .....well......easy.

I've used the Windows utility to flash my bios but it doesn't have the latest one online so I had to manually download it and select the rom from my HDD.

Worked fine. I'm still here :)

It probably worked well because you D/L the BIOS first.

I had used it before without problems, but as mentioned, their website is such trash I wouldn't trust it anymore. Still pissed at Asus a bit for lack of Vista support for my board after the fact. I had planned on my board being a springboard to Vista but I still can't upgrade to SP1 because its all but been abandoned.

I updated the bios on my P5W DH about 6 times with the utility and it didn't get mobo buggered. However right after that it seemed the newer bios updates were a problem for the mobo so I stopped updating maybe 16 months ago.

What I have gathered is its not the utility thats scary but Windows itself and all the apps running. If you have (say) 45 processes running - including things like WinPatrol, antivirus etc - then you want to shut those things down so the chances of any interference are smaller.

That and reset the BIOS to default.

I still wouldn't trust it but you'll have a much better chance of success.

Don't use the software. The ultity doesn't work with 64bit os. If you are going to update ur bios....place the .rom in a thumbstick., Plus, don't forget to default all your settings before the bios update.

and yea, asus upload is slow as HELL!

well the first bios i updated for this board(p5q-deluxe)-- i put the bios on a thumbstick and all went well.. Then when i just went to update it again-- i coudlnt get the bios to see the thumbstick in the ezflash utility... So HAD to use the asus update software... But i did download the bios to the desktop first then updated it from my computer-- not though the internet.. Worked just fine... I am on vista 64 and didnt have any problems.. The key is to load it from your computer not though the internet...

Please stop spreading bullshit. I used it with Vista Ultimate x64 and my rig still works.

the update threough that worked fine on my p5k pro but make a backup incase

I have used it a couple of times with my P5Q Premium, and it seems to work ok. The only thing I would remind/suggest is to make sure your BIOS is at all defaults before you flash.

Very informative and helpful thread. I have a Maximus Formula and I was looking to update my BIOS and now it looks like I have a consensus on the "best" way to do it.

One thing I didn't know was this step here about setting everything in the BIOS to default BEFORE doing the flash. Why is that necessary?

I don't know why to be honest, but with this Asus board, it has to be. Before I did that I had all kinds of problems with the BIOS getting corrupt, and I about RMA'ed my board because of it.

it doesnt even work on my M2N Deluxe.... i always updated with a flash drive

Asus's site is so damn slow, sometimes it take 5 minutes just to load a page and to download a small file. they need to do something about that. put a serve in US perhaps would be a start

One thing that I do, is download the BIOS and flash from my desktop because of the crap servers that they have.

I totally agree, with all the money that Asus makes, they should be able to afford something a lot better! I did see something funny, acutally someone put it in there forums to get a better site...lol. See link below

i used that old version of the asus update tool and it bricked my p5k. i did it under vista 64. i would not take the chance using this tool. just burn the bios to a cd, dvd or put it on a thumb drive. please for your safty, don't use this tool!!!

I've used the asus util many times no problem. I do always download the bios first and update from a file on the HD.

Has anyone mentioned how embarisingly slow the asus web site it? I would not do anything that depended on that site to function for a set amount of time.

I've used it a few times before without any problems, but like what some others have done, I have always downloaded the bios first to my HD, and flashed from there. I just used it to flash a Maximus II Formula with Vista Ultimate x64.

i tried to flash under vista 64 when i got my board back in feb, bricked it. i was without the board for a month. just burn the bios to a cd or dvd and use the utility built into the bios. you should never flash inside of windows!!!

Point taken. Seems as if I've been lucky so far. Given the other reported failures, the safe route is to just use the bios utility.

I say use it and ignore all the sound advice here. When you brick your board it will be a valuable lesson.

it's so easy to burn the bios to a cd and use the tool in the bios. why take the chance?
