Asus Rampage NB temp help.

Is it worth removing the factory paste for MX-2 or possibly lapping the nb/sb portion of the Rampage formula heatsink? I am getting idle temps of 57C. I have a spot fan blowing as close as I can to it but its not making much difference.
 
If that is the one with the removable piece so you can put a watere block on it, I think it would be. I read in a review somewhere the reviewer was underwhelmed by the factory applicaion of paste. Lord knows the heatsink itself is big enough.

But keep in mind that temp reading is not directly from the NB itself but some sensor on the board and might even have more to do with Mosfet temps than NB.

If removing the motherboard was needed I would want to contact ASUS tech support and find out exaclty where that sensor is on the board.
 
I found that redoing the paste with MX-2 didn't help much. I eventually put an HR-05 SLI on it and it keeps it under control with a noctua fan @ around 45 C
 
Ive had the board a while and that sink did not want to come off. I heated it with a hair dryer etc and it got to the point I thought I could break it.. if I didnt already. I left it on there as is. Going to try to get my spot cooler closer to the NB to see if it helps. Im seeing 65C under load. My case is built as more of a silent setup which isn't helping it much.

You unscrewed the 4 compression springs? Popped out the stupid lil pins on the SB?

yeah .. and that mofo was on there. There was nothing left holding it. I gave up lol. Anyone know if I will need to adjust my NB voltage when moving to a 45nm cpu? I have a Q9650 coming to replace my Q6600 and wasn't sure if I needed to start over again with all my voltages. Plus I didnt know if running that high of a NB would effect the 45nm chip in anyway.

Er...I don't see where you posted your NB voltages :p

That's interesting that it was stuck on so tight. Mine came off after a few wiggles here and there. IF anything you could try dripping some AS cleaner from an edge and try to get it in there to try and dissolve whatever crap ASUS decided to glue it down with. (Though I'm not sure if theres any risk to your electronics so wait until someone clarifies for me :D)

Ive been reading where some others had issues getting thiers off also. My current NB voltage is 1.41v and I have 8gb of OCZ @ 1063mhz of course ram is not 1:1

Interesting. As you see in my sig my ram, I have my NB set at 1.29.

1.41 is a bit high I'd say. Though I believe the NB is rated up to 75C?

Edit: Your OC doesn't seem super intense either, any reason why the NB is so high?

Honestly I think it was a lazy OC on my part that was stable. The settings worked on my IP35Pro and with the amount of memory I am running thats what it took to get stable. This probably isnt the case on the x48 and I will take the time with the Q9650 to get my voltages to thier lowest stable value. This probably explains my NB temps also. Although ive seen some go as high as 1.55V but on water. I hate messing with my own stuff. I do builds all the time and it makes me lazy with my rig.

Yea I originally started out really high on my NB, something retarded like 1.45 to try and get my Q9550 stable but eventually found other settings I could mess with that allowed me to be stable and lower my NB AND cpu voltage down.

Nice, I might hit you up for some advice later. The Q9650 im getting was ran on a P45 Maximus 24/7 @ 4ghz with 1.31v cpu, 1.29vtt, and 1.31NB if I remember correctly. I think I can reach 445 on the FSB.
